On-line power quality monitoring system using compactRIO device: a review on system development

    Get PDF
Power quality is an important issue in the power system. If power quality problem occurred, the effects such as manufacturing interruptions, loss of production, loss of revenue, lost of opportunities, product damage, and wasted energy and decreased equipment life will significantly be affected. One of the ways to detect the power quality problem is by on-line monitoring. This monitoring can be done by accessed to the point address in networking and those who involved in this site can go through for a quick assessment. This paper comprises of modelling the system, which is developed in LabVIEW environment and integrated using a powerful CompactRIO system. Detail of the modules and integration process are presented, together with the initial result obtained from data monitoring

Abstract: Emotional Intelligence (EI) is part of those who regulate their emotions according to a logically consistent of emotional functioning. This cross-sectional study is carried out among year 1 to 3 students of Biomedical Science Programme in Kuala Lumpur The questionnaire is based on three criteria which are intrapersonal ability, stress management and general mood. The sample size is 135 students by using stratified random sampling. The general objective of this study is to determine the emotional intelligence level of Biomedical Science students among socio demographic factor. The results showed the mean of EI male students (111.84±12.92 S.D.) is lower than that in female students (112.02±10.23 S.D.), the mean of EI among student staying in campus (112.55±10.947 S.D.) are higher than cam us student staying off-campus (110.76±10.274 S.D.) and the mean of EI among first year (114.35±13.32 S.D.) is the highest compared to that in Year 2 (113.16±9.592 S.D.) and Year 3 (109.93±10.169 S.D.). However there was no significance mean difference of EI between gender, year of study and residences (p>0.05). In conclusion, Emotional Intelligence (EI) is at average level (79.7%) and it was not depending on gender year of study and residences

Meta-analysis of nature conservation values in Asia & Oceania: Data heterogeneity and benefit transfer issues

We conduct a meta-analysis (MA) of around 100 studies valuing nature conservation in Asia and Oceania. Dividing our dataset into two levels of heterogeneity in terms of good characteristics (endangered species vs. nature conservation more generally) and valuation methods, we show that the degree of regularity and conformity with theory and empirical expectations is higher for the more homogenous dataset of contingent valuation of endangered species. For example, we find that willingness to pay (WTP) for preservation of mammals tends to be higher than other species and that WTP for species preservation increases with income. Increasing the degree of heterogeneity in the valuation data, however, preserves much of the regularity, and the explanatory power of some of our models is in the range of other MA studies of goods typically assumed to be more homogenous (such as water quality). Subjecting our best MA models to a simple test forecasting values for out-of-sample observations, shows median (mean) forecasting errors of 24 (46) percent for endangered species and 46 (89) percent for nature conservation more generally, approaching levels that may be acceptable in benefit transfer for policy use. We recommend that the most prudent MA practice is to control for heterogeneity in regressions and sensitivity analysis, rather than to limit datasets by non-transparent criteria to a level of heterogeneity deemed acceptable to the individual analyst. However, the trade-off will always be present and the issue of acceptable level of heterogeneity in MA is far from settle

Radiation grafting of DMAEMA and DMAEMA-based adsorbents for thorium adsorption

Radiation grafting of two tertiary amine methacrylates; 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) onto polyolefin non-woven fabric (PE/PP-NWF) was comparatively investigated in this study. In addition, the absorbent preparation process, grafting kinetics, and mechanism were investigated. The thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was performed to confirm the successful grafting and incorporation of the two monomers functional groups onto PE/PP-NWF. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to examine the differences between the crystal sizes and structures. Lastly, the adsorption of Th(IV) ion was investigated in batch mode. The results indicate that the radiation grafting of both DMAEMA and DEAEMA onto PE/PP-NWF required high activation energies with increasing temperatures from 313 to 333 K. Furthermore, P-DMAEMA and P-DEAEMA demonstrated different adsorption behaviours towards Th(IV). Results showed that P-DEAEMA exhibited lower Th(IV) adsorption capacity compared to P-DMAEMA, although both contain similar carbonyl and tertiary amino functional groups. These findings indicate that the molecular structure of the adsorbent was responsible. The molecular sizes increased with increasing branched carbon chains from the methyl to ethyl groups. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis indicated that induced steric effect eventually increases the inter-molecular repulsions caused by the additional CH2-groups in the structure, which reduces adsorption capacity

Global economic burden of unmet surgical need for appendicitis

Background There is a substantial gap in provision of adequate surgical care in many low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to identify the economic burden of unmet surgical need for the common condition of appendicitis. Methods Data on the incidence of appendicitis from 170 countries and two different approaches were used to estimate numbers of patients who do not receive surgery: as a fixed proportion of the total unmet surgical need per country (approach 1); and based on country income status (approach 2). Indirect costs with current levels of access and local quality, and those if quality were at the standards of high-income countries, were estimated. A human capital approach was applied, focusing on the economic burden resulting from premature death and absenteeism. Results Excess mortality was 4185 per 100 000 cases of appendicitis using approach 1 and 3448 per 100 000 using approach 2. The economic burden of continuing current levels of access and local quality was US 92492millionusingapproach1and92 492 million using approach 1 and 73 141 million using approach 2. The economic burden of not providing surgical care to the standards of high-income countries was 95004millionusingapproach1and95 004 million using approach 1 and 75 666 million using approach 2. The largest share of these costs resulted from premature death (97.7 per cent) and lack of access (97.0 per cent) in contrast to lack of quality. Conclusion For a comparatively non-complex emergency condition such as appendicitis, increasing access to care should be prioritized. Although improving quality of care should not be neglected, increasing provision of care at current standards could reduce societal costs substantially
