Pulsed THz radiation due to phonon-polariton effect in [110] ZnTe crystal

Pulsed terahertz (THz) radiation, generated through optical rectification (OR) by exciting [110] ZnTe crystal with ultrafast optical pulses, typically consists of only a few cycles of electromagnetic field oscillations with a duration about a couple of picoseconds. However, it is possible, under appropriate conditions, to generate a long damped oscillation tail (LDOT) following the main cycles. The LDOT can last tens of picoseconds and its Fourier transform shows a higher and narrower frequency peak than that of the main pulse. We have demonstrated that the generation of the LDOT depends on both the duration of the optical pulse and its central wavelength. Furthermore, we have also performed theoretical calculations based upon the OR effect coupled with the phonon-polariton mode of ZnTe and obtained theoretical THz waveforms in good agreement with our experimental observation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

iluted III–Nₓ–V₁ˍₓ alloys were successfully synthesized by nitrogen implantation into GaAs,InP, and AlyGa1−yAs. In all three cases the fundamental band-gap energy for the ion beam synthesized III–Nₓ–V₁ˍₓ alloys was found to decrease with increasing N implantation dose in a manner similar to that observed in epitaxially grownGaNₓAs1−x and InNₓP₁ˍₓalloys. In GaNₓAs₁ˍₓ the highest value of x (fraction of “active” substitutional N on As sublattice) achieved was 0.006. It was observed that NAs is thermally unstable at temperatures higher than 850 °C. The highest value of x achieved in InNₓP₁ˍₓ was higher, 0.012, and the NP was found to be stable to at least 850 °C. In addition, the N activation efficiency in implantedInNₓP₁ˍₓ was at least a factor of 2 higher than that in GaNₓAs₁ˍₓ under similar processing conditions. AlyGa1−yNₓAs₁ˍₓ had not been made previously by epitaxial techniques. N implantation was successful in producing AlyGa1−yNₓAs₁ˍₓalloys. Notably, the band gap of these alloys remains direct, even above the value of y (y>0.44) where the band gap of the host material is indirect. This work was supported by the ‘‘Photovoltaic Materials Focus Area’’ in the DOE Center of Excellence for the Synthesis and Processing of Advanced Materials, Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Division of Materials Sciences under U.S. Department of Energy Contract No. DE-ACO3-76SF00098. A Coupled AKNS-Kaup-Newell Soliton Hierarchy

A coupled AKNS-Kaup-Newell hierarchy of systems of soliton equations is proposed in terms of hereditary symmetry operators resulted from Hamiltonian pairs. Zero curvature representations and tri-Hamiltonian structures are established for all coupled AKNS-Kaup-Newell systems in the hierarchy. Therefore all systems have infinitely many commuting symmetries and conservation laws. Two reductions of the systems lead to the AKNS hierarchy and the Kaup-Newell hierarchy, and thus those two soliton hierarchies also possess tri-Hamiltonian structures.Comment: 15 pages, late

Binary Nonlinearization of Lax pairs of Kaup-Newell Soliton Hierarchy

Kaup-Newell soliton hierarchy is derived from a kind of Lax pairs different from the original ones. Binary nonlinearization procedure corresponding to the Bargmann symmetry constraint is carried out for those Lax pairs. The proposed Lax pairs together with adjoint Lax pairs are constrained as a hierarchy of commutative, finite dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems in the Liouville sense, which also provides us with new examples of finite dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems. A sort of involutive solutions to the Kaup-Newell hierarchy are exhibited through the obtained finite dimensional integrable systems and the general involutive system engendered by binary nonlinearization is reduced to a specific involutive system generated by mono-nonlinearization.Comment: 15 pages, plain+ams tex, to be published in Il Nuovo Cimento

Lifting of Steel Coils in Bore-Vertical Orientation

Lifting of coils with the bore in the vertical orientation could give rise to safety issues if the coil integrity is compromised during the slitting and packing operation. Coil telescoping (whereby the inner wraps of the coil spiral out) is known to occur during lifting, which could pose as a serious threat to the safety of personnel involved. In this type of incident, the coil straps are also broken when their breaking strength is exceeded and the whole coil would unwrap itself at an elevated position. Back tension is applied to the strip while shearing wide strip into narrower slits; this allows sufficient radial pressure to be built up within the bulk of the narrow coils. Upon unloading, the radial pressures at the innermost and outermost wraps decrease to zero but the bulk of the inter-wrap pressure within the coil remains largely unchanged. The interwrap frictional forces developed within the coil enable the coil to retain its integrity under its own weight. It is found that the radial pressures developed within the slit coil play the most crucial role in providing sufficient frictional resistance to support the weight of the coil wraps during lifting with the bore in the vertical orientation. In addition, the inter-wrap pressures near the footprint of the mechanical lifting device, near the bore, have the most significant influence in preventing coil telescoping

INTRODUCTION: The forceful overarm throwing is considered a fundamental movement for many skills. In addition, it is also regards as a characteristic of child’s development. As to the researches of development, gender difference is also concerned by experts of development. Research related to child motor development traditionally follow the structure of Burton’s (1992) on amendment of Development Sequences for Overhand Throwing table to measure throwing patterns. But overarm throwing is a kind of fast motion especially for the period which is from backswing to release. The traditional way mentioned above can’t provide detailed data. The purpose of the study was to find out the related factors with ball velocity of throwing of girls aged 11-12 years

Concise theory of chiral lipid membranes

A theory of chiral lipid membranes is proposed on the basis of a concise free energy density which includes the contributions of the bending and the surface tension of membranes, as well as the chirality and orientational variation of tilting molecules. This theory is consistent with the previous experiments [J.M. Schnur \textit{et al.}, Science \textbf{264}, 945 (1994); M.S. Spector \textit{et al.}, Langmuir \textbf{14}, 3493 (1998); Y. Zhao, \textit{et al.}, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA \textbf{102}, 7438 (2005)] on self-assembled chiral lipid membranes of DC8,9_{8,9}PC. A torus with the ratio between its two generated radii larger than 2\sqrt{2} is predicted from the Euler-Lagrange equations. It is found that tubules with helically modulated tilting state are not admitted by the Euler-Lagrange equations, and that they are less energetically favorable than helical ripples in tubules. The pitch angles of helical ripples are theoretically estimated to be about 0∘^\circ and 35∘^\circ, which are close to the most frequent values 5∘^\circ and 28∘^\circ observed in the experiment [N. Mahajan \textit{et al.}, Langmuir \textbf{22}, 1973 (2006)]. Additionally, the present theory can explain twisted ribbons of achiral cationic amphiphiles interacting with chiral tartrate counterions. The ratio between the width and pitch of twisted ribbons is predicted to be proportional to the relative concentration difference of left- and right-handed enantiomers in the low relative concentration difference region, which is in good agreement with the experiment [R. Oda \textit{et al.}, Nature (London) \textbf{399}, 566 (1999)].Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
