Effect of ionization/recombination processes on the electrical interactions between positively charged particles in highly collisional plasmas
The effect of ionization and recombination processes on the electrical
interactions between a pair of small charged particles in highly collisional
plasmas is discussed. In particular, it is shown that these processes suppress
the long-range attraction between positively charged particles. The condition
corresponding to the vanishing of attraction is derived. The role of the effect
for conditions of existing experiments is estimated
Solar models and electron screening
We investigate the sensitivity of the solar model to changes in the nuclear
reaction screening factors. We show that the sound speed profile as determined
by helioseismology certainly rules out changes in the screening factors
exceeding more than 10%. A slightly improved solar model could be obtained by
enhancing screening by about 5% over the Salpeter value. We also discuss how
envelope properties of the Sun depend on screening, too. We conclude that the
solar model can be used to help settling the on-going dispute about the
``correct'' screening factors.Comment: accepted for publication by Astron. Astrophy
Induced Scattering and Two-Photon Absorption of Alfven Waves with Arbitrary Propagation Angles
The equation for temporary evolution of spectral energy of collisionless
Alfven waves is derived in framework of weak turbulence theory. The main
nonlinear processes for such conditions are induced scattering and two quantum
absorption of Alfven waves by thermal ions. The equation for velocity
distribution of thermal particles is derived that describes diffusion in
momentum space due to this nonlinear processes. Comparison is done with the
results of another authors. Results obtained are qualitatively differ from the
ones obtained for the case of Alfven waves propagation along mean magnetic
field.Comment: 8 page
Relativistic Klein-Gordon-Maxwell multistream model for quantum plasmas
A multistream model for spinless electrons in a relativistic quantum plasma
is introduced by means of a suitable fluid-like version of the
Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system. The one and two-stream cases are treated in
detail. A new linear instability condition for two-stream quantum plasmas is
obtained, generalizing the previously known non-relativistic results. In both
the one and two-stream cases, steady-state solutions reduce the model to a set
of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which can be numerically
solved, yielding a manifold of nonlinear periodic and soliton structures. The
validity conditions for the applicability of the model are addressed
Acceleration of small astrophysical grains due to charge fluctuations
We discuss a novel mechanism of dust acceleration which may dominate for
particles smaller than m. The acceleration is caused by their
direct electrostatic interactions arising from fluctuations of grain charges.
The energy source for the acceleration are the irreversible plasma processes
occurring on the grain surfaces. We show that this mechanism of
charge-fluctuation-induced acceleration likely affects the rate of grain
coagulation and shattering of the population of small grains.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, revised version, submitted to Astrophysical

Field Theoretic Description of Ultrarelativistic Electron-Positron Plasmas
Ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasmas can be produced in high-intensity
laser fields and play a role in various astrophysical situations. Their
properties can be calculated using QED at finite temperature. Here we will use
perturbative QED at finite temperature for calculating various important
properties, such as the equation of state, dispersion relations of collective
plasma modes of photons and electrons, Debye screening, damping rates, mean
free paths, collision times, transport coefficients, and particle production
rates, of ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasmas. In particular, we will
focus on electron-positron plasmas produced with ultra-strong lasers.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, published versio
Nonlinear propagation of light in Dirac matter
The nonlinear interaction between intense laser light and a quantum plasma is
modeled by a collective Dirac equation coupled with the Maxwell equations. The
model is used to study the nonlinear propagation of relativistically intense
laser light in a quantum plasma including the electron spin-1/2 effect. The
relativistic effects due to the high-intensity laser light lead, in general, to
a downshift of the laser frequency, similar to a classical plasma where the
relativistic mass increase leads to self-induced transparency of laser light
and other associated effects. The electron spin-1/2 effects lead to a frequency
up- or downshift of the electromagnetic (EM) wave, depending on the spin state
of the plasma and the polarization of the EM wave. For laboratory solid density
plasmas, the spin-1/2 effects on the propagation of light are small, but they
may be significant in super-dense plasma in the core of white dwarf stars. We
also discuss extensions of the model to include kinetic effects of a
distribution of the electrons on the nonlinear propagation of EM waves in a
quantum plasma.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Nonlinear dynamics of large amplitude dust acoustic shocks and solitary pulses in dusty plasmas
We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA
solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently
observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 115002
(2009)], Teng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 245005 (2009)], and Bandyopadhyay
et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 065006 (2008)]. For this purpose, we use a
generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting
for arbitrary large amplitude dust number density compressions and potential
distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves.
Time-dependent numerical solutions of our nonlinear model compare favorably
well with the recent experimental works (mentioned above) that have reported
the formation of large amplitude non-stationary DA shocks and DA solitary
pulses in low-temperature dusty plasma discharges.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. To be published in Physical Review
