LCA for emerging waste treatment technologies: theoretical approach and practical application

Our work is focusing on the assessment of the life cycle environmental performance of emerging technologies on waste treatment, by applying the LCA principles and tools (EASETECH, SimaPro). These technologies aim at the valorisation of waste for the production of bio-based products, the recovery of materials from waste and the optimization of established waste treatment technologies. A summarizing scheme including the feedstock types and the main processes used as well as the resulting products is illustrated in Figure 1. The technology readiness level (TRL) of the examined treatment schemes ranges between 3-6, while this diversification is also obvious within the treatment schemes themselves. The main aim for conducting LCA in all of the aforementioned emerging technologies is to timely inform the design and development process in order to support decision making for future investments. 248 σ.Στην σημερινή κοινωνία της γνώσης, επιτακτικότερα από ποτέ εμφανίζεται η ανάγκη για την απρόσκοπτη επικοινωνία και συνεργασία των Οργανισμών και των Πληροφοριακών Συστημάτων τους. Δηλαδή, το ζητούμενο, πλέον, είναι όχι απλώς η ανταλλαγή δεδομένων μεταξύ των οργανισμών αλλά η από άκρο σε άκρο συνεργασία αυτών, ερμηνεύοντας με ενιαίο τρόπο την ανταλλασσόμενη πληροφορία και ενοποιώντας-ολοκληρώνοντας λειτουργίες και ροές εργασιών, ώστε να επιτυγχάνεται με τρόπο διάφανο προς τον χρήστη η επίτευξη των ζητούμενων δια-οργανωσιακών λειτουργιών. Η ανάγκη αυτή αναφέρεται στην βιβλιογραφία με τον όρο διαλειτουργικότητα. Είναι φανερό ότι η διαλειτουργικότητα δεν είναι ένα αμιγώς τεχνικό ζήτημα, αλλά αντιθέτως αποτελεί ένα πολυδιάστατο πρόβλημα με πολλαπλές πτυχές (τεχνικές, διοικητικές, νομικές και οργανωτικές). Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία αποτελεί μια καταγραφή και ανασκόπηση των σημαντικότερων πληροφοριών που σχετίζονται με την ενσωμάτωση της διαλειτουργικότητας στην Εθνική Στρατηγική, τη συμμετοχή σε σχετικά έργα και δραστηριότητες, την αφομοίωση της Διαλειτουργικότητας στους τομείς της Ηλεκτρονικής Διακυβέρνησης και του Ηλεκτρονικού Επιχειρείν, καθώς και συγκριτική αξιολόγηση αυτών.In today's society, appears stronger than ever the need for unhindered communication and cooperation between organizations. Thus, today there is a demand not only for information exchange between organizations but also for their end-to-end cooperation, common interpretation of the exchanged information, and for the unification and integration of their processes and workflows, resulting in the execution of the inter-organizational operations in a seamless to the user way. This need is referred in the bibliography as interoperability. It is obvious that interoperability is not a solely technical matter. On the contrary, it’s a multifaceted issue with many dimensions (technical, administrative, legislative, organizational etc). The current diploma thesis includes the review of important information related to the integration of interoperability in the National Strategy, participation in projects and activities related to interoperability, the assimilation of interoperability in the areas of eGovernment and eBusiness and last, but not least, the benchmark and comparison of the relevant information.Χριστίνα-Μαρία Γ.
