    Dissipation in nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators

    We have measured the dissipation and frequency of nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators with resonant frequencies between 13.7 MHz and 157.3 MHz, over a temperature range of 1.4–274 K. Using both magnetomotive network analysis and a time-domain ring-down technique, we have found the dissipation in this material to have a temperature dependence roughly following T^(0.2), with Q^(–1) ≈ 10^(–4) at low temperatures. The frequency dependence of a large dissipation feature at ~35–55 K is consistent with thermal activation over a 0.02 eV barrier with an attempt frequency of 10 GHz

    Visualizing stromal cell dynamics in different tumor microenvironments by spinning disk confocal microscopy

    The tumor microenvironment consists of stromal cells and extracellular factors that evolve in parallel with carcinoma cells. To gain insights into the activities of stromal cell populations, we developed and applied multicolor imaging techniques to analyze the behavior of these cells within different tumor microenvironments in the same live mouse. We found that regulatory T-lymphocytes (Tregs) migrated in proximity to blood vessels. Dendriticlike cells, myeloid cells and carcinoma-associated fibroblasts all exhibited higher motility in the microenvironment at the tumor periphery than within the tumor mass. Since oxygen levels differ between tumor microenvironments, we tested if acute hypoxia could account for the differences in cell migration. Direct visualization revealed that Tregs ceased migration under acute systemic hypoxia, whereas myeloid cells continued migrating. In the same mouse and microenvironment, we experimentally subdivided the myeloid cell population and revealed that uptake of fluorescent dextran defined a low-motility subpopulation expressing markers of tumor-promoting, alternatively activated macrophages. In contrast, fluorescent anti-Gr1 antibodies marked myeloid cells patrolling inside tumor vessels and in the stroma. Our techniques allow real-time combinatorial analysis of cell populations based on spatial location, gene expression, behavior and cell surface molecules within intact tumors. The techniques are not limited to investigations in cancer, but could give new insights into cell behavior more broadly in development and disease

    We report the fabrication and electrical characterization of a single electron transistor in a modulation doped silicon/silicon-germanium heterostructure. The quantum dot is fabricated by electron beam lithography and subsequent reactive ion etching. The dot potential and electron density are modified by laterally defined side gates in the plane of the dot. Low temperature measurements show Coulomb blockade with a single electron charging energy of 3.2 meV.Comment: Typos corrected; to appear in Appl. Phys. Let

    Search for charged Higgs decays of the top quark using hadronic tau decays

    We present the result of a search for charged Higgs decays of the top quark, produced in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s=\surd s = 1.8 TeV. When the charged Higgs is heavy and decays to a tau lepton, which subsequently decays hadronically, the resulting events have a unique signature: large missing transverse energy and the low-charged-multiplicity tau. Data collected in the period 1992-1993 at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to 18.7±\pm0.7~pb1^{-1}, exclude new regions of combined top quark and charged Higgs mass, in extensions to the standard model with two Higgs doublets.Comment: uuencoded, gzipped tar file of LaTeX and 6 Postscript figures; 11 pp; submitted to Phys.     Inclusive jet cross section in pˉp{\bar p p} collisions at s=1.8\sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV

    The inclusive jet differential cross section has been measured for jet transverse energies, ETE_T, from 15 to 440 GeV, in the pseudorapidity region 0.1η\leq | \eta| \leq 0.7. The results are based on 19.5 pb1^{-1} of data collected by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data are compared with QCD predictions for various sets of parton distribution functions. The cross section for jets with ET>200E_T>200 GeV is significantly higher than current predictions based on O(αs3\alpha_s^3) perturbative QCD calculations.     Measurement of Dijet Angular Distributions at CDF

    We have used 106 pb^-1 of data collected in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV by the Collider Detector at Fermilab to measure jet angular distributions in events with two jets in the final state. The angular distributions agree with next to leading order (NLO) predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in all dijet invariant mass regions. The data exclude at 95% confidence level (CL) a model of quark substructure in which only up and down quarks are composite and the contact interaction scale is Lambda_ud(+) < 1.6 TeV or Lambda_ud(-) < 1.4 TeV. For a model in which all quarks are composite the excluded regions are Lambda(+) < 1.8 TeV and Lambda(-) < 1. 6 TeV.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, LaTex, using epsf.sty.     Measurement of the Helicity of W Bosons in Top Quark Decays

    We use the transverse momentum spectrum of leptons in the decay chain t-->bW with W-->l nu to measure the helicity of the W bosons in the top quark rest frame. Our measurement uses a ttbar sample isolated in 106 +/- 4 inverse picobarns of data collected in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Assuming a standard V--A weak decay, we find that the fraction of W's with zero helicity in the top rest frame is F_0 = 0.91 +/- 0.37 (stat) +/- 0.13 (syst), consistent with the standard model prediction of F_0=0.70 for a top mass of 175 GeV/c**2.Comment: Submitted to PRL. 8 pages, 2 figure

    Search for Chargino-Neutralino Associated Production at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider

    We have searched in ppˉp \bar{p} collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV for events with three charged leptons and missing transverse energy. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, we expect trilepton events from chargino-neutralino (\chione \chitwo) pair production, with subsequent decay into leptons. We observe no candidate e+ee±e^+e^-e^\pm, e+eμ±e^+e^-\mu^\pm, e±μ+μe^\pm\mu^+\mu^- or μ+μμ±\mu^+\mu^-\mu^\pm events in 106 pb1^{-1} integrated luminosity. We present limits on the sum of the branching ratios times cross section for the four channels: \sigma_{\chione\chitwo}\cdot BR(\chione\chitwo\to 3\ell+X) 81.5 \mgev\sp and M_\chitwo > 82.2 \mgev\sp for tanβ=2\tan\beta=2, μ=600\mu =-600~\mgev\sp and M_\squark= M_\gluino.Comment: 9 pages and 3 figure
