A Precision Measurement of the Neutron Twist-3 Matrix Element d2nd_2^n: Probing Color Forces

Double-spin asymmetries and absolute cross sections were measured at large Bjorken xx (0.25 x \le x \le 0.90), in both the deep-inelastic and resonance regions, by scattering longitudinally polarized electrons at beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV from a transversely and longitudinally polarized 3^3He target. In this dedicated experiment, the spin structure function g2g_2 on 3^3He was determined with precision at large xx, and the neutron twist-three matrix element d2nd_2^n was measured at \left of 3.21 and 4.32 GeV2^2/c2c^2, with an absolute precision of about 10510^{-5}. Our results are found to be in agreement with lattice QCD calculations and resolve the disagreement found with previous data at \left = 5 GeV2^2/c2c^2. Combining d2nd_2^n and a newly extracted twist-four matrix element, f2nf_2^n, the average neutron color electric and magnetic forces were extracted and found to be of opposite sign and about 30 MeV/fm in magnitude.Comment: Corrected a typo in the author list and Figure 1 legend. 6 pages, 2 figures, 2 table

Measurement of the Neutron Radius of 208Pb Through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_PV in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 208Pb. A_PV is sensitive to the radius of the neutron distribution (Rn). The result A_PV = 0.656 \pm 0.060 (stat) \pm 0.014 (syst) ppm corresponds to a difference between the radii of the neutron and proton distributions Rn - Rp = 0.33 +0.16 -0.18 fm and provides the first electroweak observation of the neutron skin which is expected in a heavy, neutron-rich nucleus.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus of cats that establishes a lifelong persistent infection with immunologic impairment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In an approximately 2 year-long experimental infection study, cats infected with a biological isolate of FIV clade C demonstrated undetectable plasma viral loads from 10 months post-infection onward. Viral DNA was detected in CD4+CD25+ and CD4+CD25- T cells isolated from infected cats whereas viral RNA was not detected at multiple time points during the early chronic phase of infection. Viral transcription could be reactivated in latently infected CD4+ T cells <it>ex vivo </it>as demonstrated by detectable FIV <it>gag </it>RNA and 2-long terminal repeat (LTR) circle junctions. Viral LTR and <it>gag </it>sequences amplified from peripheral blood mononuclear cells during early and chronic stages of infection demonstrated minimal to no viral sequence variation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Collectively, these findings are consistent with FIV latency in peripheral blood CD4+ T cells isolated from chronically infected cats. The ability to isolate latently FIV-infected CD4+ T lymphocytes from FIV-infected cats provides a platform for the study of <it>in vivo </it>mechanisms of lentiviral latency.</p

Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy in patients with pancreatic cancer: A national prospective study

Objective: UK national guidelines recommend pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) in pancreatic cancer. Over 80% of pancreatic cancers are unresectable and managed in non-surgical units. The aim was to assess variation in PERT prescribing, determine factors associated with its use and identify potential actions to improve prescription rates. Design: RICOCHET was a national prospective audit of malignant pancreatic, peri-ampullary lesions or malignant biliary obstruction between April and August 2018. This analysis focuses on pancreatic cancer patients and is reported to STROBE guidelines. Multivariable regression analysis was undertaken to assess factors associated with PERT prescribing. Results: Rates of PERT prescribing varied among the 1350 patients included. 74.4% of patients with potentially resectable disease were prescribed PERT compared to 45.3% with unresectable disease. PERT prescription varied across surgical hospitals but high prescribing rates did not disseminate out to the respective referring network. PERT prescription appeared to be related to the treatment aim for the patient and the amount of clinician contact a patient has. PERT prescription in potentially resectable patients was positively associated with dietitian referral (p = 0.001) and management at hepaticopancreaticobiliary (p = 0.049) or pancreatic unit (p = 0.009). Prescription in unresectable patients also had a negative association with Charlson comorbidity score 5–7 (p = 0.045) or >7 (p = 0.010) and a positive association with clinical nurse specialist review (p = 0.028). Conclusion: Despite national guidance, wide variation and under-treatment with PERT exists. Given that most patients with pancreatic cancer have unresectable disease and are treated in non-surgical hospitals, where prescribing is lowest, strategies to disseminate best practice and overcome barriers to prescribing are urgently required

Do agile managed information systems projects fail due to a lack of emotional intelligence?

    Get PDF
YesAgile development methodologies (ADM) have become a widely implemented project management approach in Information Systems (IS). Yet, along with its growing popularity, the amount of concerns raised in regard to human related challenges caused by applyingADMare rapidly increasing. Nevertheless, the extant scholarly literature has neglected to identify the primary origins and reasons of these challenges. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine if these human related challenges are related to a lack of Emotional Intelligence (EI) by means of a quantitative approach. Froma sample of 194 agile practitioners, EI was found to be significantly correlated to human related challenges in agile teams in terms of anxiety, motivation, mutual trust and communication competence. Hence, these findings offer important new knowledge for IS-scholars, project managers and human resource practitioners, about the vital role of EI for staffing and training of agile managed IS-projects

Laboratory and mathematical modelling of fines production from CSG interburden rocks

Twelve clastic core samples from the Walloon Coal Measures, Surat Basin were tested for disintegration in artificially produced fluids varying in ionic strength. XRD data confirm the presence of smectite (water sensitive clay) in the samples. Flow-through rock disintegration experiments demonstrate that the higher the concentration of smectite and soluble plagioclase is, the quicker rock disintegrates in artificial low ionic strength fluid. Pre-soaking of rocks with high ionic strength fluid reduces rock disintegration rate in low ionic strength fluids. This is explained by very strong clay-clay and clay-sand attraction forces, evidenced through zeta-potential measurements, which inhibit rock degradation. For the studied samples it is clear that rock disintegration rate is proportional to fluid velocity. Experimental rock disintegration data are fitted by a power erosion model with two adjusted parameters: fluid ionic strength and Reynolds number. The experimental results satisfactorily agree with theoretical data. Rock disintegration rates are calculated as released particle volume per thickness of interburden layer per day at a fixed Reynolds number and low ionic strength. The laboratory work suggests that keeping wells under strong ionic fluid during shut-in times and a reduction of water production rate will preserve rock integrity for a longer period of time

Development of Pandemic Vaccines: ERVEBO Case Study

Preventative vaccines are considered one of the most cost-effective and efficient means to contain outbreaks and prevent pandemics. However, the requirements to gain licensure and manufacture a vaccine for human use are complex, costly, and time-consuming. The 2013–2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak was the largest EVD outbreak to date and the third Public Health Emergency of International Concern in history, so to prevent a pandemic, numerous partners from the public and private sectors combined efforts and resources to develop an investigational Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) vaccine candidate (rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP) as quickly as possible. The rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccine was approved as ERVEBOTM by the European Medicines Authority (EMA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2019 after five years of development. This review describes the development program of this EBOV vaccine, summarizes what is known about safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy, describes ongoing work in the program, and highlights learnings applicable to the development of pandemic vaccines
