The Author explores Cuban multiculturalism, by reflecting on: the reasons that led to the “cultural homogenization” of the Island; the Cuban Constitution, especially considering the latest reform to the document; the behaviour of local minorities related with the idea of national identity

The Author analyzes two Cuban cultural influences thathave received relatively little interest because of their limited visibility within the local social environment: the Arab and the Jewish cultures. As for the former, the Author focuses on both Arabic-origin architectural elements and language and he highlights the Andalusian and African influences especially as far as the fulá and the hausa languages are concerned. As for the latter, he illustrates some of the cultural dynamics of the Jewish community, particularly with regard to the religious and the in-group cooperation aspects. The text attempts to interpret the local pluralism in multicultural terms.

The Author analyzes the presence of coolies in Cuba and he focuses on two central elements: the Chinese arrival to the Island, characterized by the dynamics of slave trade, and the “voluntary migration” of the Californian Chinese. While analyzing Chinese historical “first” and “second arrival”, the Author focuses on racial relations and mestizaje between the Asian and African populations, especially at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the commercial activities of the barrio chino (Chinatown) and the ancestral cultural tradition sponsored by the Chung Wah Casino. He also highlights the cultural exclusivity of local coolies and their ability in adapting and melting with the Cuban socio-cultural background, especially in its daily manifestations.

The autor discusses some colonial cuban dynamics describing the socio-political trajectory of the island, the slave trade of the 16th- to the 19th-century, the development of the sugar trade, and the dynamics of recognition-rejection of cultural diversity. By presenting the reasons behind discrimination, miscegenation and syncretism, the autor offers a tentative theoretical trajectory aimed at interpreting the Cuban model through a multicultural perspective

Results of the ARGO-YBJ experiment in detection of gamma rays

Abstract The ARGO-YBJ air shower detector has been in stable data taking for five years at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Observatory (Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l.) with a duty cycle > 86% and an energy threshold of a few hundreds of GeV. Besides working in shower mode, the detector used the scaler mode technique, which can reach the minimum threshold of 1 GeV. In this paper a selection of results in gamma ray astronomy will be presented, including those from the study of the diffuse emission from the Galactic plane

Prospects for Gamma-Ray Bursts detection by the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The first Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) catalog presented by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) collaboration includes 28 GRBs, detected above 100 MeV over the first three years since the launch of the Fermi mission. However, more than 100 GRBs are expected to be found over a period of six years of data collection thanks to a new detection algorithm and to the development of a new LAT event reconstruction, the so-called "Pass 8." Our aim is to provide revised prospects for GRB alerts in the CTA era in light of these new LAT discoveries. We focus initially on the possibility of GRB detection with the Large Size Telescopes (LSTs). Moreover, we investigate the contribution of the Middle Size Telescopes (MSTs), which are crucial for the search of larger areas on short post trigger timescales. The study of different spectral components in the prompt and afterglow phase, and the limits on the Extragalactic background light are highlighted. Different strategies to repoint part of - or the entire array - are studied in detail.Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2015), The Hague, The Netherland

EFFECT OF RECREATIONAL TRAIL TRAFFIC LEVEL ON EASTERN RED-BACKED SALAMANDER (PLETHODON CINEREUS) RELATIVE ABUNDANCE

The effects of roads and trails on terrestrial salamanders, primarily plethodontids, can be important. The abundance of terrestrial salamanders often increases with distance from roads. Less is known about the effects of recreational or hiking trails on terrestrial salamanders than is known about the effects of roads. We explored how low and high traffic trails in a suburban biological reserve affect the relative abundance of Eastern Red-backed Salamanders (Plethodon cinereus). We found more salamanders under cover objects next to low traffic trails compared to either high traffic trails or wooded areas without trails. At wooded sites, we found only striped morphs whereas at high traffic sites we found only unstriped morphs. Low traffic sites included a range of color morph frequencies. The proportion of females found in each site did not differ, nor did the mean size of the salamanders. Our results suggest that the impact of recreational walking trails needs to be examined more closely to see how and why the distributions of P. cinereus, and potentially other woodland salamanders, are affected and what trail characteristics are important in driving the apparent effects. Such information will contribute to the design and maintenance of walking trails in natural areas that minimize effects on terrestrial salamanders, and likely other organisms
