    Rare but Severe Neural Machine Translation Errors Induced by Minimal Deletion: An Empirical Study on Chinese and English

    We examine the inducement of rare but severe errors in English-Chinese and Chinese-English in-domain neural machine translation by minimal deletion of the source text with character-based models. By deleting a single character, we can induce severe translation errors. We categorize these errors and compare the results of deleting single characters and single words. We also examine the effect of training data size on the number and types of pathological cases induced by these minimal perturbations, finding significant variation. We find that deleting a word hurts overall translation score more than deleting a character, but certain errors are more likely to occur when deleting characters, with language direction also influencing the effect.Comment: COLING 2022 Camera Read

    Neural network based patient recovery estimation of a PAM-based rehabilitation robot

    Rehabilitation robots have shown a promise in aiding patient recovery by supporting them in repetitive, systematic training sessions. A critical factor in the success of such training is the patient’s recovery progress, which can guide suitable treatment plans and reduce recovery time. In this study, a neural network-based approach is proposed to estimate the patient’s recovery, which can aid in the development of an assist-as-needed training strategy for the gait training system. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately estimate the external torques generated by the patient to determine their recovery. The estimated patient recovery is used for an impedance control of a 2-DOF robotic orthosis powered by pneumatic artificial muscles, which improves the robot joint compliance coefficients and makes the patient more comfortable and confident during rehabilitation exercises

    Being a basaltic volcano, Con Co island is an isometric hill 2.3 km2 wide and 63 m high, located far 24 km from the mainland, and guards the entrance to the Gulf of Tonkin. It is isolated, but unique in location, and relatively closed to mainland. Despite its small size, the characteristics of morphology and spatial structures, geological composition, area, height, ecological landscape, dynamics and stability of the island... create great values of geo-natural position resources and favorable environment for island residents. Regarding geo - economic position resources, the island is a district under the Quang Tri province, a priority location for development of the country’s marine and island economy, and the economic centre at the entrance of the Gulf of Tonkin. This is also a convenient site for the development of marine economic sectors such as fishery, natural conservation, services - tourism and some others. In terms of geo-political position resources, the island has tremendous advantages for the sovereignty, sovereign rights and national interests at sea. As an outpost at the highly sensitive geo-political area, the Con Co island has the great value of defense, as a solid military base in the entrance of the Gulf of Tonkin and the most important link in the line of defense from coastal islands in the North Centre. It possesses many valuable cultural heritages, especially the heroic relics during the war against the US.Đảo Cồn Cỏ nguồn gốc núi lửa bazan, dạng đồi đẳng thước rộng 2,3 km2, cao 63 m, nằm cách xa bờ 24 km.     Stable isotopes as an effective tool for N nutrient source identification in a heavily urbanized and agriculturally intensive tropical lowland basin

We present the application of dual stable isotope analyses of NO3 (δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3) to provide a comprehensive assessment of the provenance, partitioning, and conversion of nitrate across the Day River Basin (DRB), Vietnam, which is heavily impacted by agriculture and urbanization. Stable isotope compositions of river water δ18O-H2O, in addition to their δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 signatures, were sampled at 12 locations in the DRB. Sample collection was conducted during three different periods to capture changes in regional weather and agricultural fertilization regimes; April (the dry season and key fertilization period), July (the rainy season and another key fertilization period) and October (the rainy season with no regional fertilization). Ranges of NO3 stable isotopes are − 7.1 to + 9.2‰ and − 3.9 to + 13.2‰ for δ18O and δ15N, respectively. Interpretation of the stable isotope data characterizes 4 main sources of NO3 in the DRB; (1) nitrified urea fertilizer derived from an intensive agricultural irrigation network, (2) soil and groundwater leaching from within the basin (3) manure and sewage inputs (which is more prevalent in downstream river sections) and (4) upstream inflow from the Red River which discharges into the Day River through the Dao River. We applied a mixing model for the DRB consisting of 4 variables, representing these 4 different sources. The partition calculation shows that during the fertilization and rainy period of July, more than 45% of river NO3 is derived from nitrified urea sources. During the other sampling periods (April and October), manure and sewage contribute more than 50% of river NO3 and are derived from the middle portion of the DRB, where the Day River receives domestic wastewater from the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi. Stable isotope data of O and N reveal that nitrification processes are more prevalent in the rainy season than in dry season and that this predominantly takes place in paddy field agricultural zones. In general, data demonstrate that nitrate loss in the DRB is due to denitrification which takes place in polluted stretches of the river and dominates in the dry season. This study highlights that (i) domestic waste should be treated prior to its discharge into the Day River and (ii) the need for better catchment agricultural fertilization practices as large portions of fertilizer currently discharge into the river, which greatly impacts regional water quality

    Coastal area in Khanh Hoa Province belongs to Coastal South Central Region, where the Vietnam mainland juts out farthest into the west of the East Sea, and has a special relationship in space with the offshore Spratly islands, the geo-strategic Highlands and economic - political centre of Ho Chi Minh City. This coastal area is close to the sloping and deep continental shelf; possesses the diverse landforms and complex spatial structure with the systems of peninsula, islands, bays, lagoons and river mouths etc. that creates enormous potential for geo-natural position resources, of which highlights are the values of coastal bays and islands. In the geo-economic position resources, Khanh Hoa coastal area has great potential to build the base for exploiting offshore resources, establish large  marine economic zones, and develop the economy of marine services, especially the port - navigation and coastal ecotourism. In the geo-political position resources, this is one of leading sites for defending and protecting the country from sea, and ensuring the sovereignty and national interests in the East Sea including the direct administration of Spratly island district. The detailed investigation and assessment of the position resources in this coastal area will be an important scientific basis for the sea and island development in Khanh Hoa province.Vùng bờ tỉnh Khánh Hòa nằm ở duyên hải Nam Trung Bộ, thuộc phần nhô ra xa  nhất của đất liền Việt Nam ra vùng giữa bờ tây Biển Đông, có quan hệ đặc biệt về không gian với quần đảo xa bờ Trường Sa, vùng địa bàn chiến lược Tây Nguyên và trung tâm kinh tế - chính trị thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. Đây là vùng bờ có thềm lục địa phía ngoài sâu và dốc; hình thể và cấu trúc không gian đa dạng và phức tạp với hệ thống các bán đảo, đảo, vũng vịnh, đầm và cửa sông ... tạo ra tiềm năng to lớn về tài nguyên địa - tự nhiên, mà nổi bật là giá trị của hệ thống các vũng vịnh và đảo ven bờ. Về tài nguyên địa - kinh tế, vùng bờ Khánh Hòa có tiềm năng lớn xây dựng cơ sở hậu cần khai thác tài nguyên biển xa, xây dựng các cơ sở kinh tế biển lớn, phát triển kinh tế dịch vụ biển, đặc biệt là cảng - hàng hải và du lịch sinh thái biển. Về tài nguyên địa - chính trị, đây là một trong những vị trí có vai trò quan trọng trong việc phòng thủ và bảo vệ đất nước từ biển, đảm bảo chủ quyền và lợi ích quốc gia trên Biển Đông, trong đó có việc trực tiếp quản lý huyện đảo Trường Sa. Việc điều tra, đánh giá chi tiết tài nguyên vị thế vùng bờ sẽ là cơ sở khoa học quan trọng để phát triển biển đảo tỉnh Khánh Hòa

    Sub-optimal Deep Pipelined Implementation of MIMO Sphere Detector on FPGA

    Sphere detector (SD) is an effective signal detection approach for the wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system since it can achieve near-optimal performance while reducing significant computational complexity. In this work, we proposed a novel SD architecture that is suitable for implementation on the hardware accelerator. We first perform a statistical analysis to examine the distribution of valid paths in the SD search tree. Using the analysis result, we then proposed an enhanced hybrid SD (EHSD) architecture that achieves quasi-ML performance and high throughput with a reasonable cost in hardware. The fine-grained pipeline designs of 4 × 4 and 8 × 8 MIMO system with 16-QAM modulation delivers throughput of 7.04 Gbps and 14.08 Gbps on the Xilinx Virtex Ultrascale+ FPGA, respectively

    Simulation and optimization of a silicon-polymer bimorph microgripper

    This paper presents an electro-thermally bimorph microgripper based on silicon-polymer laterally stacked structures and a method to optimized the fabricated device. The actuated displacement is enhanced due to the polymer constraint effect. Both the thermal expansion and apparent Young’s modulus of the constrained polymer blocks are significantly improved, compared with the no constraint one. The device consists of a serpentine-shape deep silicon structure with a thin film aluminum heater on the top and filling polymer in the trenches among the vertical silicon parts. The fabricated bimorph microgripper can operate in four modes and generates a large motion up to 15 μm. The simulated results are met the fabricated measurements. An optimized structure is proposed for decreasing the working temperature, power consumption but increasing the output displacement. The simulated results are showed that the output displacement is increased up to 550% and temperature profile improved considerably. This electro-thermally silicon-polymer opened and closed microgripper can be used in micro-robotics, micro-assembly, minimally invasive surgery, living cells surgery.
