DESIGN STUDY OF SMALL BOILING REACTORS FOR POWER AND HEAT PRODUCTION
A design study has been made of a small "Package" nuclear power plant for the production of electric power and heat in remotely located, inaccessible areas devoid of natural fuels. The design utilizes a horizontal boiling reactor as a steam generator consistent with safe and simple equipment and a minimum building height. A reactor design of 51/2 Mw capacity, with a combined net electric power output of 750 kw and a heat plant output of 4500 kw, was studied in detail. Tertative cost estimates are presented on the basis of this combination. General comparisons have been made between different systems designed for either independent or combined production of 425 kw net electric power and 2500 kw available heat. (auth

DESIGN STUDY OF A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT FOR 100-KW ELECTRIC AND 400-KW HEAT CAPACITY
A conceptional design study was made of a lowpower ''package'' reactor plant for the production of 100 kw of electrical power and 400 kw of heat at remote Arctic installations. The power plant steam generator is proposed to be an unmanned, heterogeneous, boilingtype reactor capable of continuous operation for extended periods. A STUDY OF HEAVY WATER CENTRAL STATION BOILING REACTORS (CSBR)
Reactors designed for economic operation in stationary central power plants were studied. Certain objectives presented themselves as being of particular importance if an attractive economy were to be obtained. These objectives arei use of ceramiic (UO/sub 2/) rather than inetallic fueI; use of natural uranium; high conversion ratio; long fuel life; natural convection for heat transfer; production of superheated steam; a high power output; a limited size of pressure tank; fueI handling without use of Iarge pressure lid; and moderator control. Three different typcs of power reactors are prcsented; a natural uranium, boiling heavy water reactor with forced clrculation; a boiling reactor with natural convcction and sIightly enriched fueI; and two heavy water boiling and superheating reactors using slightly enriched fuel and natural conveetion.
