The Moderating Effect of Job Characteristics on Managers' Reactions to Career Plateau
This study analyzes the impact of career plateau and job characteristics on people's attitudes or behaviors, but it also extends the traditional field of research on career plateau by taking into account the influence of factors linked to job characteristics on the relationship between career plateau and work-related attitudes. Our results show that subjective career plateau, job enrichment potential, role ambiguity and participation in decision making are related to various individual attitudes and behaviors. The impact of career plateau on these variables varies according to job enrichment potential, participation in decision making and role ambiguity. Although these direct and moderating effects are only significant for some of the facets of job satisfaction and behavior, it appears that these job characteristics can contribute to limit the negative consequences associated with career plateau.

Many organizations today are concerned with career plateau. Most researchers in this field have chosen either an historical approach based on objective measures, or a psychological approach based on people's perception of being blocked in their career progression. Ettington (1992) shows the interest of analyzing career plateau by using both approaches jointly. This study aims at validating some of her results on samples of Quebecian and French managers and to study the impact of career plateau on various aspects of job stress. Results confirm most of Ettington's results: the feeling of being plateaued has a different impact on satisfaction and stress when managers are objectively plateaued or when they are not. The study also shows the mediating effect of locus of control and discusses possible implications for research and for companies.
Plateauing, career, stress, locus of control, Plafonnement, plateau, carrière, stress, lieu de contrôle
Analysis of Chiral Oxirane Molecules in Preparation for Next Generation Telescopes: A Review, New Analysis, & a Chiral Molecule Database
Human biology has a preference for left-handed chiral molecules and an
outstanding question is if this is imposed through astrophysical origins. We
aim to evaluate the known information about chiral molecules within
astrophysical and astrochemical databases, evaluate chemical modeling accuracy,
and use high-level CCSD(T) calculations to characterize propylene oxide and
other oxirane variants. By comparing these computational values with past
laboratory experiments, we find a 99.9% similarity. We also have put together a
new database dedicated to chiral molecules and variants of chiral molecules to
assist in answering this question.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 12 tables, accepted by Astronomy & Computation

Two novel human NUMB isoforms provide a potential link between development and cancer
We previously identified four functionally distinct human NUMB isoforms. Here, we report the identification of two additional isoforms and propose a link between the expression of these isoforms and cancer. These novel isoforms, NUMB5 and NUMB6, lack exon 10 and are expressed in cells known for polarity and migratory behavior, such as human amniotic fluid cells, glioblastoma and metastatic tumor cells. RT-PCR and luciferase assays demonstrate that NUMB5 and NUMB6 are less antagonistic to NOTCH signaling than other NUMB isoforms. Immunocytochemistry analyses show that NUMB5 and NUMB6 interact and complex with CDC42, vimentin and the CDC42 regulator IQGAP1 (IQ (motif) GTPase activating protein 1). Furthermore, the ectopic expression of NUMB5 and NUMB6 induces the formation of lamellipodia (NUMB5) and filopodia (NUMB6) in a CDC42- and RAC1-dependent manner. These results are complemented by in vitro and in vivo studies, demonstrating that NUMB5 and NUMB6 alter the migratory behavior of cells. Together, these novel isoforms may play a role in further understanding the NUMB function in development and cancer
Multicentre, randomised clinical trial of paediatric concussion assessment of rest and exertion (PedCARE): a study to determine when to resume physical activities following concussion in children.
INTRODUCTION: Rest until symptom-free, followed by a progressive stepwise return to activities, is often prescribed in the management of paediatric concussions. Recent evidence suggests prolonged rest may hinder recovery, and early resumption of physical activity may be associated with more rapid recovery postconcussion. The primary objective is to determine whether the early reintroduction of non-contact physical activity beginning 72 hours postinjury reduces postconcussive symptoms at 2 weeks in children following an acute concussion as compared with a rest until asymptomatic protocol.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a randomised clinical trial across three Canadian academic paediatric emergency departments. A total of 350 participants, aged 10-17.99 years, who present within 48 hours of an acute concussion, will be recruited and randomly assigned to either the study intervention protocol (resumption of physical activity 72 hours postconcussion even if experiencing symptoms) or physical rest until fully asymptomatic. Participants will document their daily physical and cognitive activities. Follow-up questionnaires will be completed at 1, 2 and 4 weeks postinjury. Compliance with the intervention will be measured using an accelerometer (24 hours/day for 14 days). Symptoms will be measured using the validated Health and Behaviour Inventory. A linear multivariable model, adjusting for site and prognostically important covariates, will be tested to determine differences between groups. The proposed protocol adheres to the RCT-CONSORT guidelines.
DISCUSSION: This trial will determine if early resumption of non-contact physical activity following concussion reduces the burden of concussion and will provide healthcare professionals with the evidence by which to recommend the best timing of reintroducing physical activities
