Neotropical tadpoles: spatial and temporal distribution and habitat use in a seasonal lake in Veracruz, México

    Get PDF
We studied a tadpole assemblage in a seasonal neotropical lake where 14 species of anurans reproduce. Tadpoles were collected monthly at nine sampling stations at depth intervals of 1 m from the surface to the bottom (13 m). Sufficient numbers of tadpoles of three species were collected to compare habitat use. This three species assemblage breed in the following order (first to last): Smilisca baudinii, Gastrophryne usta, and Rana berlandieri. R. berlandieri had the greatest microhabitat breadth followed by S. baudinii. S. baudinii and G. usta had high microhabitat overlap, but significant differences in microhabitat use were found. S. baudinii tended to occur near the bottom, while G. usta was near the surface. This study shows that temporal and habitat partitioning both occur and depend on the species of tadpole. Dynamic interactions occur between habitat and temporal dimensions. Phenology and habitat selection depend both on the species and on abiotic and biotic factors

Background and aims: Forest restoration is of increasing concern around the world, mainly in agricultural areas where remnant native forest patches are scarce and isolated from each other. Here, we assess the performance in plantation of two native tree species from the Espinal. We aimed (1) to compare the survival and growth of Prosopis alba (algarrobo blanco) and Celtis ehrenbergiana (tala) planted in a forest edge and an open site, (2) to compare the incidence of vertebrate and invertebrate herbivores between species and sites, (3) to describe other factors that could affect the performance of saplings in agricultural areas.  M&M: We planted a total of 200 saplings per species, distributed in two sites and monthly assessed the survival, height and the incidence of vertebrate and invertebrate herbivores.  Results: 11 months after planting, the survival for algarrobo and tala were 32% and 17%, respectively (P<0.0001). The survival of algarrobo saplings was higher in the forest edge than in the open site while for the survival of tala saplings we found an opposite pattern (P<0.0001). Final sapling height was lower than at planting time, without differences between species and sites (P>0.05). Vertebrate herbivores affected 28% of saplings of both species, while invertebrates affected a 5% of saplings.  Conclusions: We recommend to plant “algarrobo” for increasing the area of remnant forest patches, and tala for creating new patches in open areas or increase the connectivity between isolated patches, in sites with livestock exclusion and low herbicide drift.

A series of double metal oxalates of stoichiometry MM´(C2O4)2.4H2O (with MM´= MnCo, MnNi, MnZn, CoNi, CoCu, CoZn, NiCu, NiZn and CuZn have been prepared and characterized. Their structural behavior was investigated by means of X-ray powder diffractometry, showing a strong structural analogy to the orthorhombic, so-called beta-modification, of the related simple oxalato complexes of composition MC2O4.2H2O. The vibrational spectroscopic behavior of the double metal oxalates was investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The results clearly confirmed the close structural analogies between the MM´(C2O4)2.4H2O, alfa-MC2O4.2H2O and beta-MC2O4.2H2O series of complexes.Fil: D’Antonio, María C.. From carious to salivarius: A case of Streptococcus Salivarius Infective Endocarditis

    Get PDF
Background: Streptococcus salivarius forms part of the Viridans family which accounts for almost 40% of all endocarditis cases. However, S.salivarius is only attributed to 2% of those cases. In the most common setting, S.salivarius is a commensal bacterium of both the oral mucosa and the gut, but it has proven to have infective potential. S.salivarius accounts as an easily missed and commonly misdiagnosed Viridians strep species, but has been implicated as a rare cause of infective endocarditis. Case presentation: We present the case of a 43-year-old male who presented with worsening fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, and subjective fever. Physical examination revealed a di Novo systolic murmur, splinter hemorrhages in nails, and petechial lesions on the soles. A transthoracic echocardiogram revealed a bicuspid aortic valve with mild aortic and tricuspid regurgitation, severe mitral regurgitation, mild left atrial dilation, and left ventricular concentric hypertrophy. The patient was started on vancomycin and ceftriaxone due to the concern of infective endocarditis. A transesophageal echocardiogram revealed a 1.3 cm abscess-like structure on the atrial side of the anterior mitral valve leaflet extending into the aortic root. Blood cultures grew Streptococcus Salivarius. A maxillofacial CT did not reveal any tooth abscess, and an abdominal CT to look for secondary sources of abscess and to rule out neoplasia was also negative. During the third day of hospitalization, the patient presented right eye visual disturbances. A brain MRI revealed a left occipital lobe lesion consistent with septic emboli. The patient continued with IV antibiotics and was closely monitored for systemic symptoms of infection, right eye symptoms resolved without further intervention. Blood cultures were periodically analyzed to assess bacteremia clearance, and no growth was reported since day 3 of admission. On the 12th day of hospitalization the patient underwent aortic and mitral valve replacement and after recovery he was discharged home. Conclusion: As it is well known, the presence of bacteremia along with a di novo murmur in a patient with fever is strongly suggestive of infective endocarditis. Our patient fill two major modified Duke’s criteria and two minor. In addition, both TTE and TEE revealed a bicuspid aortic valve which could have contributed to the patient´s IE presentation. Streptococcus Salivarius is a rare organism encountered in IE cases. However, it has proven to have infective potential to the CNS, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal system. Hence, raising awareness of this bacteria as a potential cause of IE should be brought up into the medical community in order to both, consider the diagnosis and prevent related systemic complications

Liquid Phase Hydrogenation of Pharmaceutical Interest Nitroarenes over Gold-Supported Alumina Nanowires Catalysts

In this work, Au nanoparticles, supported in Al2O3 nanowires (ANW) modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane were synthetized, for their use as catalysts in the hydrogenation reaction of 4-(2-fluoro-4-nitrophenyl)-morpholine and 4-(4-nitrophenyl)morpholin-3-one. ANW was obtained by hydrothermal techniques and the metal was incorporated by the reduction of the precursor with NaBH4 posterior to superficial modification. The catalysts were prepared at different metal loadings and were characterized by different techniques. The characterization revealed structured materials in the form of nanowires and a successful superficial modification. All catalysts show that Au is in a reduced state and the shape of the nanoparticles is spherical, with high metal dispersion and size distributions from 3.7 to 4.6 nm. The different systems supported in modified-ANW were active and selective in the hydrogenation reaction of both substrates, finding for all catalytic systems a selectivity of almost 100% to the aromatic amine. Catalytic data showed pseudo first-order kinetics with respect to the substrate for all experimental conditions used in this work. The solvent plays an important role in the activity and selectivity of the catalyst, where the highest efficiency and operational stability was achieved when ethanol was used as the solventIndexación: Scopu

Life Project for Adolescents: A Concept Analysis

    Get PDF
It is essential to identify protective factors during adolescence due to its high incidence on risk behaviors. One of these factors is to have a life project that influences adolescent decision-making. The concept of life project has mainly been linked to teen pregnancy, depression and suicide; however, some authors agree that the concept is not clearly defined. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to define the concept of adolescent life project, using the methodology developed by Walker and Avant for concept analysis. The following steps were followed are: select a concept, determining the purpose of analysis, identifying all uses of the concept, determining the defining attributes, identifying a model, a borderline and a contrary cases, identifying history and consequences of the concept, and finally defining empirical referents. After the analysis, the final definition of the concept of adolescent life project includes the set of desires, future plans and actions necessary to accomplish it that influence the adolescent decisions. Knowing the importance of this concept when working with adolescents may guide development more effective interventions
