Methods in angle-resolved photoelectron diffraction: Slab method versus separable propagator cluster approach
We have compared multiple-scattering results of angle-resolved photoelectron diffraction spectra between the exact slab method and the separable propagator perturbation cluster method. In the slab method, the source wave and multiple scattering within strongly scattering layers are expanded in spherical waves while the scattering among different layers is expressed in plane waves. The transformation between spherical waves and plane waves is done exactly. The plane waves are then matched across the solid-vacuum interface to a single outgoing plane wave in the detector's direction. The slab is infinitely extended parallel to the surface. Normal to the surface, enough layers are included to ensure convergence of the calculated intensity. The separable propagator perturbation approach uses two approximations; (i) A separable representation of the Green's-function propagator and (ii) a perturbation expansion of multiple-scattering terms. The cluster size is finite, typically containing 50 atoms or less. Results of this study show that using a cluster of 148 atoms, the largest cluster used to date, the cluster size is still too small for the cluster results on Ni(001) to converge with those of the slab method. Multiplayer Browser-Based Game Utilizing JavaScript and WebGL Frameworks
The goal of our project is to make an online large-scale multiplayer game with persistent user data. This will involve real-time player interaction and many customization options. This game will be a massively-multiplayer online tactics role-playing game (MMOTRPG), a genre that has been insufficiently explored. This area of browser-based massive multiplayer games is also a platform of gaming that has yet to realize the capabilities of modern browsers and the level of interaction and graphics they now support.
The scope of our project does not encompass the complete feature set we have intended for the game, but rather a technical demonstration of its core and the overcoming of any difficulties that may arise in the technical components of this game. As a result, the bulk of this project will be comprised of developing a functional code-base to run a more basic version of the game in our intended environment.
The purpose of this game is to ultimately create a free unrestricted online multiplayer experience where creativity and ingenuity are fostered in the players. While the full set of features intended for the game far exceeds the components covered by the project, we plan to make an independent and functional game that will act as an early iteration for the project’s future development cycle

Thermal Effects and Small Signal Modulation of 1.3-μm InAs/GaAs Self-Assembled Quantum-Dot Lasers
We investigate the influence of thermal effects on the high-speed performance of 1.3-μm InAs/GaAs quantum-dot lasers in a wide temperature range (5–50°C). Ridge waveguide devices with 1.1 mm cavity length exhibit small signal modulation bandwidths of 7.51 GHz at 5°C and 3.98 GHz at 50°C. Temperature-dependent K-factor, differential gain, and gain compression factor are studied. While the intrinsic damping-limited modulation bandwidth is as high as 23 GHz, the actual modulation bandwidth is limited by carrier thermalization under continuous wave operation. Saturation of the resonance frequency was found to be the result of thermal reduction in the differential gain, which may originate from carrier thermalization

A 39-year-old HIV-positive black African woman with previously treated cerebral toxoplasmosis experienced a foetal intra-uterine death due to congenital toxoplasmosis. This case demonstrates the complexities of screening for maternal toxoplasmosis in the context of pregnancy and HIV infection-related cell-mediated immunosuppression. Additionally, the case highlights the challenges in providing effective preventative and therapeutic drug options for congenital toxoplasmosis
