    Rotation-resistant corn rootworms in Iowa

    Get PDF
There are variants of both corn rootworm species in Iowa that are resistant to crop rotation. The northern corn rootworm overcame the annual rotation of corn with another crop by developing a two-year life cycle. This variety of the northern corn rootworm (known as extended diapause) became common and caused extensive damage to rotated corn in the late 1980s in northwest Iowa. Since then it has spread throughout Iowa and is probably found in every county

Saskatchewan vegetable production – an opportunity awaits

    Get PDF
Non-Peer ReviewedAt 7% “in-season” self sufficiency, Saskatchewan imports about $25,000,000 of fresh vegetables annually. To further exploit this apparent diversification opportunity a vegetable project was initiated in 1996 to demonstrate newer production technologies and to obtain data for Saskatchewan based costs of production. One half acre sized fields of pumpkin, carrots, cabbage, peppers, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, romaine lettuce, celery, Brussels sprouts and cantaloupe have been grown and marketed to simulate commercial production. The results have shown that acceptable yields of suitable quality produce can be grown and superior quality where proximity to market is a factor. Net returns have been positive for the most part but, since labour is such a significant component of variable costs, productivity and efficient use of labour can be critical. These initiatives have given the vegetable industry in Saskatchewan further impetus and direction. A number of new producers and a new generation cooperative, currently in the formative stages, appear poised to further diversify the agricultural landscape with SASK GROWN fresh vegetables

Selection and reconstruction of the top quarks in the all-hadronic decays at a Linear Collider

    Get PDF
A method of reconstruction of the top quarks produced in the process E+E- -> t\bar{t} -> 6 jets at a Linear Collider (LC) is proposed. The approach does not involve a kinematic fit, as well as assumptions on the invariant masses of the dijets originating from the decays of W bosons and, therefore, the method is expected to be less sensitive to theoretical and experimental uncertainties on the top-mass measurement than traditional reconstruction methods. For the first time, the reconstruction of the top quarks was investigated using the full LC detector simulation after taking into account the background arising from QCD multi-jet production.Comment: 22 pages, including 13 figures and 3 table
