Time-dependent toroidal compactification proposals and the Bianchi type I model: classical and quantum solutions

    Get PDF
In this work we construct an effective four-dimensional model by compactifying a ten-dimensional theory of gravity coupled with a real scalar dilaton field on a time-dependent torus. This approach is applied to anisotropic cosmological Bianchi type I model for which we study the classical coupling of the anisotropic scale factors with the two real scalar moduli produced by the compactification process. Under this approach, we present an isotropization mechanism for the Bianchi I cosmological model through the analysis of the ratio between the anisotropic parameters and the volume of the Universe which in general keeps constant or runs into zero for late times. We also find that the presence of extra dimensions in this model can accelerate the isotropization process depending on the momenta moduli values. Finally, we present some solutions to the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation in the context of Standard Quantum Cosmology.Comment: LaTeX source, 16 pages, Modified title and additional references. Binary Decay of Light Nuclear Systems

A review of the characteristic features found in fully energy-damped, binarydecay yields from light heavy-ion reactions with 20≤Atarget+Aprojectile≤8020\leq A_{target} + A_{projectile}\leq 80 is presented. The different aspects of these yields that have been used to support models of compound-nucleus (CN) fission and deep-inelastic dinucleus orbiting are highlighted. Cross section calculations based on the statistical phase space at different stages of the reaction are presented and compared to the experimental results. Although the statistical models are found to reproduce most of the observed experimental behaviors, an additional reaction component corresponding to a heavy-ion resonance or orbiting mechanism is also evident in certain systems. The system dependence of this second component is discussed. The extent to which the binary yields in very light systems (ACN≤32)(A_{CN} \leq 32) can be viewed as resulting from a fusion-fission mechanism is explored. A number of unresolved questions, such as whether the different observed behaviors reflect characteristically different reaction times, are discussed.Comment: 79 pages REVTeX file, 39 ps Figures included - to be publihed in Physics Report

Further remarks on isospin breaking in charmless semileptonic B decays

We consider the isospin breaking corrections to charmless semileptonic decays of B mesons. Both, the recently measured branching ratios of exclusive decays by the CLEO Collaboration and the end-point reion of the inclusive lepton spectrum in form factor models, can be affected by these corrections. Isospin corrections can affect the determination of |V_ub| from exclusive semileptonic B decays at a level comparable to present statistical uncertainties.Comment: Latex, 7 pages, 1 .ps figure, to appear in Phys.
