A possible nature of breathing plasmas
A model for "breathing" plasmas observed in the large helical device [Y. Takeiri , Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 42, 147 (2000)] is proposed. It takes into account the synergism of radiation losses from both low-Z (carbon, oxygen) and high-Z (iron) impurities in the plasma power balance. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. On the mutual effect of ion temperature gradient instabilities and impurity peaking in the reversed field pinch
The presence of impurities is considered in gyrokinetic calculations of ion
temperature gradient (ITG) instabilities and turbulence in the reversed field
pinch device RFX-mod. This device usually exhibits hollow Carbon/Oxygen
profiles, peaked in the outer core region. We describe the role of the
impurities in ITG mode destabilization, and analyze whether ITG turbulence is

Hadroproduction of the Chi1 and Chi2 States of Charmonium in 800 GeV/c Proton-Silicon Interactions
The cross sections for the hadroproduction of the Chi1 and Chi2 states of
charmonium in proton-silicon collisions at sqrt{s}=38.8 GeV have been measured
in Fermilab fixed target Experiment 771. The Chi states were observed via their
radiative decay to J/psi+gamma, where the photon converted to e+e- in the
material of the spectrometer. The measured values for the Chi1 and Chi2 cross
sections for x_F>0 are 263+-69(stat)+-32(syst) and 498+-143(stat)+-67(syst) nb
per nucleon respectively. The resulting sigma(Chi1}/sigma(Chi2) ratio of
0.53+-0.20(stat)+-0.07(syst), although somewhat larger than most theoretical
expectations, can be accomodated by the latest theoretical estimates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Protective effect of stromal Dickkopf-3 in prostate cancer: opposing roles for TGFBI and ECM-1
Aberrant transforming growth factor–β (TGF-β) signaling is a hallmark of the stromal microenvironment in cancer. Dickkopf-3 (Dkk-3), shown to inhibit TGF-β signaling, is downregulated in prostate cancer and upregulated in the stroma in benign prostatic hyperplasia, but the function of stromal Dkk-3 is unclear. Here we show that DKK3 silencing in WPMY-1 prostate stromal cells increases TGF-β signaling activity and that stromal cellconditioned media inhibit prostate cancer cell invasion in a Dkk-3-dependent manner. DKK3 silencing increased the level of the cell-adhesion regulator TGF-β–induced protein (TGFBI) in stromal and epithelial cell-conditioned media, and recombinant TGFBI increased prostate cancer cell invasion. Reduced expression of Dkk-3 in patient tumors was associated with increased expression of TGFBI. DKK3 silencing reduced the level of extracellular matrix protein-1 (ECM-1) in prostate stromal cell-conditioned media but increased it in epithelial cell-conditioned media, and recombinant ECM-1 inhibited TGFBI-induced prostate cancer cell invasion. Increased ECM1 and DKK3 mRNA expression in prostate tumors was associated with increased relapse-free survival. These observations are consistent with a model in which the loss of Dkk-3 in prostate cancer leads to increased secretion of TGFBI and ECM-1, which have tumor-promoting and tumor-protective roles, respectively. Determining how the balance between the opposing roles of extracellular factors influences prostate carcinogenesis will be key to developing therapies that target the tumor microenvironment
Electron Injection at High Mach Number Quasi-Perpendicular Shocks : Surfing and Drift Acceleration
Electron injection process at high Mach number collisionless
quasi-perpendicular shock waves is investigated by means of one-dimensional
electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations. We find that energetic electrons
are generated through the following two steps: (1) electrons are accelerated
nearly perpendicular to the local magnetic field by shock surfing acceleration
at the leading edge of the shock transition region. (2) the preaccelerated
electrons are further accelerated by shock drift acceleration. As a result,
energetic electrons are preferentially reflected back to the upstream. Shock
surfing acceleration provides sufficient energy required for the reflection.
Therefore, it is important not only for the energization process by itself, but
also for triggering the secondary acceleration process. We also present a
theoretical model of the two-step acceleration mechanism based on the
simulation results, which can predict the injection efficiency for subsequent
diffusive shock acceleration process. We show that the injection efficiency
obtained by the present model agrees well with the value obtained by Chandra
X-ray observations of SN 1006. At typical supernova remnant shocks, energetic
electrons injected by the present mechanism can self-generate upstream Alfven
waves, which scatter the energetic electrons themselves.Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures, accepted by Ap
Study of CP violation in Dalitz-plot analyses of B0 --> K+K-KS, B+ --> K+K-K+, and B+ --> KSKSK+
We perform amplitude analyses of the decays , , and , and measure CP-violating
parameters and partial branching fractions. The results are based on a data
sample of approximately decays, collected with the
BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy factory at the SLAC National
Accelerator Laboratory. For , we find a direct CP asymmetry
in of , which differs
from zero by . For , we measure the
CP-violating phase .

Shrinking a large dataset to identify variables associated with increased risk of Plasmodium falciparum infection in Western Kenya
Large datasets are often not amenable to analysis using traditional single-step approaches. Here, our general objective was to apply imputation techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), elastic net and generalized linear models to a large dataset in a systematic approach to extract the most meaningful predictors for a health outcome. We extracted predictors for Plasmodium falciparum infection, from a large covariate dataset while facing limited numbers of observations, using data from the People, Animals, and their Zoonoses (PAZ) project to demonstrate these techniques: data collected from 415 homesteads in western Kenya, contained over 1500 variables that describe the health, environment, and social factors of the humans, livestock, and the homesteads in which they reside. The wide, sparse dataset was simplified to 42 predictors of P. falciparum malaria infection and wealth rankings were produced for all homesteads. The 42 predictors make biological sense and are supported by previous studies. This systematic data-mining approach we used would make many large datasets more manageable and informative for decision-making processes and health policy prioritization
