    Sialorrhea with Neurological Diseases in Oral Medicine Fields: A Narrative Review

    Background: Sialorrhea also known as drooling, literally means excessive saliva flow. In patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, and stroke. drooling or sialorrhea conditions can be a problem in their lives. In patients with neurological disorders, they experience impaired coordination of facial and mouth muscle movement. Purpose: To describe a review comprehensive management of sialorrhea in neurological, then quality of life can be improved. Reviews: literature search was done thorough literature search between 2008-2020 was done using Science direct, Pubmed and Google Scholar. Conclusion: Treatment for sialorrhea includes non-medical therapy, medical therapy, botulinum toxin, radiotherapy and surgical treatment. Oral medicine specialist dentists have a role in the care of sialorrhea patients with neurological disorders in terms of oral care related as a result of sialorrhea such as perioral dermatitis

    Oral field cancerization: Genetic profiling for a prevention strategy for oral potentially malignant disorders

    Background: Oral cancer therapy, such as radiation or surgical treatment, has pernicious long-term effects that patients suffer throughout their life, the disability being considerable with delayed diagnosis. It is well known that many oral cancers develop from oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Patients diagnosed with OPMDs may have an increased risk of developing cancer anywhere in the oral cavity. Early detection and intervention could be essential prevention strategies to inhibit oral cancer progression. OPMDs may not immediately develop into carcinoma. However, this condition provides a “field” of specific abnormalities wherein evolving altered genetic cells can be explained with the “field cancerization” concept. Purpose: This review aims to describe the “field cancerization” concept in oral cancer and OPMD, which is expected to contribute to a better clinical management strategy for oral cancer prevention. Review: “Oral field cancerization” describes oral cancers that develop in multifocal areas of pre-cancerous changes. It can be found as histologically abnormal tissue surrounding the tumor, suggesting that oral cancer often consists of multiple independent lesions. Conclusion: The oral field cancerization concept should prompt healthcare professionals to remind their patients that frequent oral examination with histological studies and molecular testing is mandatory for those at high risk of developing malignancies

    Oral carcinogenesis is also dependent on the balance of the oral microbiota. Candida albicans is a member oral microbiota that acts as an opportunistic pathogen along with changes in the epithelium that can predispose to premalignancy and/or malignancy. This systematic review uses the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines to analyze the role of Candida albicans in the process of oral carcinogenesis. Eleven articles qualified inclusion criteria, matched keywords, and provided adequate information about the carcinogenesis parameters of Candida albicans in oral cancer. Candida albicans in oral carcinogenesis can be seen as significant virulent factors for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) or potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) with normal adjacent mucosa. Candida albicans have a role in the process of oral carcinogenesis concerning morphological phenotype changes in cell structure and genotype and contribute to the formation of carcinogenic substances that can affect cell development towards malignancy
