Will Economic Globalization Result in Cultural Product Homogenization, in Theory and Practice?

Globalization is resulting in complex decisions by businesses as to where and what to produce, while free trade is resulting in a greater menu of choices for consumers, often with the blending of products and goods from various cultures, called ‘glocalization.’ This paper reviews the theories and practices behind these current happenings, which are each economic, politicaleconomic, institutional, and sociological, first by looking at the supply side of why certain countries produce the goods that they do, and then at the demand side, why consumers have particular, cultural tastes and preferences for goods. It also proffers theories to explain firm location and that of intra-industry trade. This occus when countries trade similar products rather than differentiating, as economic theory would suggest. After reviewing the literature, through numerous examples of political-economy and culture, it argues somewhat normatively that differences in culture and goods are a strength to the world community, and that globalization in the end will not likely result in a singular global culture with a uniformity of exactly identical economic goods anytime in the near futur

What is Politically-Economic Modern? World Sub-orders in a Social Science Educator’s Take on History Pedagogy

At the dawn of the 21st century—when your author, who is now an educator, was in college—the United States was the sole global superpower. But the world changed with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as other events that remade the world in which current students now study. As an educator, I can explain that the structure of the world, termed “world orders,” can subsist of underlying world “sub-orders,” and “sub-order traits” which even underlie them historically, and how students can outline them. In this way, while political-economic history looks to be constantly repeating itself, with the alignment of “traits” changing, what is considered “modern” and how we go about teaching it in history, political, and economic courses is the research aim of this article. Unlike the historian, whose job it is to identify such “traits,” the social scientist should attempt to measure their importance; as educators, we need to point this difference out to students. These new ideas come from an educator with a background in both history and the social sciences. The article summarizes the current world order and concludes with a discussion of what “future” world orders might be, based on sub-orders, while offering ideas for educators to use for students, many of whom will be future scholars, on how to measure which world orders and “sub-orders” are generationally and empirically “modern.

Paper Session II-A - Operations and Maintenance Requirements Specifications - Automated Buy-Off System

Project Engineering is the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) organization responsible for monitoring the progress of milestone-closure as part of Space Shuttle processing, also known as a flow. An Operations Maintenance Plan (OMP) is a plan used to process a Space Shuttle as it is in a flow for a single mission. Each requirement-line-item in an OMP is known as an Operations and Maintenance Requirement Specification (OMRS). Each OMRS must be verified and closed separately by a configuration management person and an engineer. An Operations and Maintenance Instructions (OMI) document, which is a type of Work Authorization Document (WAD), consists of sequences of steps of tasks performed on a Space Shuttle used to satisfy a set of OMRS\u27s. Performing steps in an OMI is a prerequisite for an OMRS to be verified and closed

Barriers to academic help-seeking: the relationship with gender-typed attitudes

In recent years, male students at UK schools and universities have been falling behind their female peers in academic achievement. Previous studies have shown that male students are less likely than female students to seek academic help, but have not investigated the relationship between gender-typical attitudes and reluctance to seek academic help. In the present study, 162 students at six UK universities completed the Help-Seeking Scales and the Traditional Gender Script Questionnaire. Data from this survey were analysed using MANOVA and multilple linear regression. The main findings were that reluctance to seek help was predicted by higher scores on the masculine gender script subscale Mastery and Control of feelings for both male (β =.448, p <.01) and female students (β = .497, p < .001). For male participants, being a Fighter and a Winner also predicted reluctance to seek help (β = −.322, p < .05) whereas, for female students, greater help-seeking was associated with more interest in creating Family Harmony (β = −.272, p < .05). These findings suggest that the help-seeking behaviour of both male and female students is related to specific gender-typical attitudes. We suggest that awareness of these attitudes can serve to inform educational practice by facilitating access to academic assistance and encouraging all students to seek academic help

Enterprise Resource Planning Research: Where Are We Now and Where Should We Go From Here?

    Get PDF
The research related to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has grown over the past several years. This growing body of ERP research results in an increased need to review this extant literature with the intent of identifying gaps and thus motivate researchers to close this breach. Therefore, this research was intended to critique, synthesize and analyze both the content (e.g., topics, focus) and processes (i.e., methods) of the ERP literature, and then enumerates and discusses an agenda for future research efforts. To accomplish this, we analyzed 49 ERP articles published (1999-2004) in top Information Systems (IS) and Operations Management (OM) journals. We found an increasing level of activity during the 5-year period and a slightly biased distribution of ERP articles targeted at IS journals compared to OM. We also found several research methods either underrepresented or absent from the pool of ERP research. We identified several areas of need within the ERP literature, none more prevalent than the need to analyze ERP within the context of the supply chain
