Interprofessional Simulation in Accredited Paramedic Programs
Introduction: Healthcare leaders advocate for interprofessional education as a means to promote collaborative practice, enhance interdisciplinary communication, and improve patient safety in the health professions. There is little evidence specific to interprofessional simulation in paramedic education. Methods: The National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) surveyed paramedic programs that were accredited or in the process of becoming accredited. Program respondents were asked to characterize their resources and their use of those resources, and then were asked about their perceptions pertaining to simulation in their program. Chi-square analysis was used to compare characteristics of programs that participated in interdisciplinary simulation with those that did not. Results: Of the 389 of 638 (61%) paramedic program survey respondents, 44% (159 of 362) report interprofessional simulation. EDUCAĂĂO PERMANENTE E O CĂRCULO DE CULTURA FREIREANO: DIĂLOGOS COM IDOSOS
O objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar o perfil dos idosos participantes da oficina -DiĂĄlogos com quem gosta de ler e escrever- e analisar suas produçÔes escritas para averiguar os significados e sentimentos atribuĂdos Ă prĂĄtica educativa, inspirada no CĂrculo de Cultura Freireano. Tratou-se de um estudo de abordagem quanti-qualitativa com 66 idosos, escolarizados, saudĂĄveis, que frequentaram a Universidade Aberta Ă Terceira Idade da Escola de Artes, CiĂȘncias e Humanidades da Universidade de SĂŁo Paulo. Os dados quantitativos foram descritos por meio da estatĂstica inferencial e os qualitativos foram tratados por meio da anĂĄlise de conteĂșdo proposto por Bardin. Os resultados revelaram que a oficina trouxe mudanças positivas, possibilitando novos sentidos e sentimentos de bem-estar nos idosos.
Lipid droplets and small extracellular vesicles: More than two independent entities
Despite increasing knowledge about small extracellular vesicle (sEV) composition
and functions in cellâcell communication, the mechanism behind their biogenesis
remains unclear. Here, we reveal for the first time that sEV biogenesis and release
into the microenvironment are tightly connected with another important organelle,
LipidDroplets (LDs). The correlationwas observed in several human cancer cell lines
aswell as patient-derived colorectal cancer stem cells (CR-CSCs).Our results demonstrated
that external stimuli such as radiation, pH, hypoxia or lipid-interfering drugs, known to affect the number of LDs/cell, similarly influenced sEV secretion. Importantly,
through multiple omics data, at both mRNA and protein levels, we revealed
RAB5C as a potential important molecular player behind this organelle connection.
Altogether, the potential to fine-tune sEV biogenesis by targeting LDs could significantly
impact the amount, cargos and properties of these sEVs, opening new clinical
perspectives
Cytogerontology since 1881: A reappraisal of August Weismann and a review of modern progress
Cytogerontology, the science of cellular ageing, originated in 1881 with the prediction by August Weismann that the somatic cells of higher animals have limited division potential. Weismann's prediction was derived by considering the role of natural selection in regulating the duration of an organism's life. For various reasons, Weismann's ideas on ageing fell into neglect following his death in 1914, and cytogerontology has only reappeared as a major research area following the demonstration by Hayflick and Moorhead in the early 1960s that diploid human fibroblasts are restricted to a finite number of divisions in vitro.
In this review we give a detailed account of Weismann's theory, and we reveal that his ideas were both more extensive in their scope and more pertinent to current research than is generally recognised. We also appraise the progress which has been made over the past hundred years in investigating the causes of ageing, with particular emphasis being given to (i) the evolution of ageing, and (ii) ageing at the cellular level. We critically assess the current state of knowledge in these areas and recommend a series of points as primary targets for future research

Cannabigerol is a novel, well-tolerated appetite stimulant in pre-satiated rats
Rationale
The appetite-stimulating properties of cannabis are well documented and have been predominantly attributed to the hyperphagic activity of the psychoactive phytocannabinoid, â9-tetrahydrocannabinol (â9-THC). However, we have previously shown that a cannabis extract devoid of â9-THC still stimulates appetite, indicating that other phytocannabinoids also elicit hyperphagia. One possible candidate is the non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid cannabigerol (CBG), which has affinity for several molecular targets with known involvement in the regulation of feeding behaviour.
Objectives
The objective of the study was to assess the effects of CBG on food intake and feeding pattern microstructure.
Methods
Male Lister hooded rats were administered CBG (30â120 mg/kg, per ora (p.o.)) or placebo and assessed in open field, static beam and grip strength tests to determine a neuromotor tolerability profile for this cannabinoid. Subsequently, CBG (at 30â240 mg/kg, p.o.) or placebo was administered to a further group of pre-satiated rats, and hourly intake and meal pattern data were recorded over 2 h.
Results
CBG produced no adverse effects on any parameter in the neuromotor tolerability test battery. In the feeding assay, 120â240 mg/kg CBG more than doubled total food intake and increased the number of meals consumed, and at 240 mg/kg reduced latency to feed. However, the sizes or durations of individual meals were not significantly increased.
Conclusions
Here, we demonstrate for the first time that CBG elicits hyperphagia, by reducing latency to feed and increasing meal frequency, without producing negative neuromotor side effects. Investigation of the therapeutic potential of CBG for conditions such as cachexia and other disorders of eating and body weight regulation is thus warranted
Mycobacteria activate γΎ T-cell anti-tumour responses via cytokines from type 1 myeloid dendritic cells: a mechanism of action for cancer immunotherapy
Attenuated and heat-killed mycobacteria display demonstrable activity against cancer in the clinic; however, the induced immune response is poorly characterised and potential biomarkers of response ill-defined. We investigated whether three mycobacterial preparations currently used in the clinic (BCG and heat-killed Mycobacterium vaccae and Mycobacterium obuense) can stimulate anti-tumour effector responses in human γΎ T-cells. γΎ T-cell responses were characterised by measuring cytokine production, expression of granzyme B and cytotoxicity against tumour target cells. Results show that γΎ T-cells are activated by these mycobacterial preparations, as indicated by upregulation of activation marker expression and proliferation. Activated γΎ T-cells display enhanced effector responses, as shown by upregulated granzyme B expression, production of the TH1 cytokines IFN-Îł and TNF-α, and enhanced degranulation in response to susceptible and zoledronic acid-treated resistant tumour cells. Moreover, γΎ T-cell activation is induced by IL-12, IL-1ÎČ and TNF-α from circulating type 1 myeloid dendritic cells (DCs), but not from type 2 myeloid DCs or plasmacytoid DCs. Taken together, we show that BCG, M. vaccae and M. obuense induce γΎ T-cell anti-tumour effector responses indirectly via a specific subset of circulating DCs and suggest a mechanism for the potential immunotherapeutic effects of BCG, M. vaccae and M. obuense in cancer

Cellular Phenotype-Dependent and -Independent Effects of Vitamin C on the Renewal and Gene Expression of Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts
Vitamin C has been shown to delay the cellular senescence and was considered a candidate for chemoprevention and cancer therapy. To understand the reported contrasting roles of vitamin C: growth-promoting in the primary cells and growth-inhibiting in cancer cells, primary mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) and their isogenic spontaneously immortalized fibroblasts with unlimited cell division potential were used as the model pair. We used microarray gene expression profiling to show that the immortalized MEF possess human cancer gene expression fingerprints including a pattern of up-regulation of inflammatory response-related genes. Using the MEF model, we found that a physiological treatment level of vitamin C (10â5 M), but not other unrelated antioxidants, enhanced cell growth. The growth-promoting effect was associated with a pattern of enhanced expression of cell cycle- and cell division-related genes in both primary and immortalized cells. In the immortalized MEF, physiological treatment levels of vitamin C also enhanced the expression of immortalization-associated genes including a down-regulation of genes in the extracellular matrix functional category. In contrast, confocal immunofluorescence imaging of the primary MEF suggested an increase in collagen IV protein upon vitamin C treatment. Similar to the cancer cells, the growth-inhibitory effect of the redox-active form of vitamin C was preferentially observed in immortalized MEF. All effects of vitamin C required its intracellular presence since the transporter-deficient SVCT2â/â MEF did not respond to vitamin C. SVCT2â/â MEF divided and became immortalized readily indicating little dependence on vitamin C for the cell division. Immortalized SVCT2â/â MEF required higher concentration of vitamin C for the growth inhibition compared to the immortalized wildtype MEF suggesting an intracellular vitamin C toxicity. District-Level Spatial Analysis of Migration Flows in Ghana: Determinants and Implications for Policy
The present study investigates the determinants of inter-district migration flows over the 1995-2000 period in Ghana. A combination of socio-economic, natural and spatial âdistrict-levelâ attributes are considered as potential variables explaining the direction of migration flows. In addition to the ânetâ migration model, âinâ and âoutâ migration models are also employed within the context of the gravity model. Results in the three models consistently show that people move out of districts with less employment and choose districts with high employment rate as destinations. While shorter distance to roads encourages out-migration, districts with better water access seem to attract migrants. Generally, people move out of predominantly agrarian districts to relatively more urbanized districts
The Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit: a consolidated design for the system requirement review of the preliminary definition phase
The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray
spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space
X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and
Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey
Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors
(TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a
spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of
5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement
Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an
overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain),
due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after
illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the
instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and
associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular
emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters.
Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration
activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument
Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the
consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU
aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the
development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU,
it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the
X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution
X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific
