Phenology of the avian spring migratory passage in Europe and North America : Asymmetric advancement in time and increase in duration
Climate change has been shown to shift the seasonal timing (i.e. phenology) and distribution of species. The phenological effects of climate change on living organisms have often been tested using first occurrence dates, which may be uninformative and biased. More rarely investigated is how different phases of a phenological sequence (e.g. beginning, central tendency and end) or its duration have changed over time. This type of analysis requires continuous observation throughout the phenological event over multiple years, and such data sets are rare. In this study we examined the impact of temperature on long-term change of passage timing and duration of the spring migration period in birds, and which species' traits explain species-specific variation. Data used covered 195 species from 21 European and Canadian bird observatories from which systematic daily sampling protocols were available. Migration dates were negatively associated with early spring temperature and timings had in general advanced in 57 years. Short-distance migrants advanced the beginning of their migration more than long-distance migrants when corrected for phylogenic relatedness, but such a difference was not found in other phases of migration. The advancement of migration has generally been greater for the beginning and median phases of migration relative to the end, leading to extended spring migration seasons. Duration of the migration season increased with increasing temperature. Phenological changes have also been less noticeable in Canada even when corrected for rate of change in temperature. To visualize long-term changes in phenology, we constructed the first multi-species spring migration phenology indicator to describe general changes in median migration dates in the northern hemisphere. The indicator showed an average advancement of one week during five decades across the continents (period 1959-2015). The indicator is easy to update with new data and we therefore encourage future research to investigate whether the trend towards longer periods of occurrence or emergence in spring is also evident in other migratory populations. Such phenological changes may influence detectability in monitoring schemes, and may have broader implications on population and community dynamics.Peer reviewe
NEMA NU 4-2008 and in vivo imaging performance of RAYCAN trans-PET/CT X5 small animal imaging system
The RAYCAN Trans-PET/CT X5 is a preclinical positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) system intended for in vivo imaging of rats and mice, featuring all-digital readout electronics for PET data acquisition.The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU 4-2008 performance evaluation was conducted on the RAYCAN Trans-PET/CT X5 in addition to assessing in vivo imaging performance of the system on live animals. The performance characteristics of the system were evaluated, including system spatial resolution, count rate performance, sensitivity and image quality. The system imaging performance is assessed in dynamic in vivo PET imaging.The system resolution defined as full width half maximum (FWHM) was 2.07 mm, 2.11 mm and 1.31 mm for the tangential, radial and axial resolution, respectively, at the center of the field of view. The peak noise equivalent count rate (NECR) values measured were 61 kcps at 0.19 MBq ml(-1) for the rat size phantom and 126 kcps at 1.53 MBq ml(-1) for the mouse size phantom. Scatter fractions were 24% and 14% for the rat and mouse phantom. The measured peak sensitivity of the system was 1.70%. Image quality in static imaging was deemed sufficient based on the image quality phantom study, with average activity concentration of 155 +/- 8.6 kBq ml(-1) and image uniformity of 5.57% when using two-dimensional filtered backprojection algorithm (2D-FBP). Rods in the image quality phantom were visualized easily up to 2 mm in size. In dynamic in vivo PET imaging, time-activity-curves from several regions were successfully measured, characterizing the radioactivity distribution in myocardial blood pool, liver, left ventricle and the lung.In conclusion, the RAYCAN Trans-PET/CT X5 system can be considered a suitable option for basic imaging needs in preclinical imaging
A systematic review of the literature examining the diagnostic efficacy of measurement of fractionated plasma free metanephrines in the biochemical diagnosis of pheochromocytoma
BACKGROUND: Fractionated plasma metanephrine measurements are commonly used in biochemical testing in search of pheochromocytoma. METHODS: We aimed to critically appraise the diagnostic efficacy of fractionated plasma free metanephrine measurements in detecting pheochromocytoma. Nine electronic databases, meeting abstracts, and the Science Citation Index were searched and supplemented with previously unpublished data. Methodologic and reporting quality was independently assessed by two endocrinologists using a checklist developed by the Standards for Reporting of Diagnostic Studies Accuracy Group and data were independently abstracted. RESULTS: Limitations in methodologic quality were noted in all studies. In all subjects (including those with genetic predisposition): the sensitivities for detection of pheochromocytoma were 96%–100% (95% CI ranged from 82% to 100%), whereas the specificities were 85%–100% (95% CI ranged from 78% to 100%). Statistical heterogeneity was noted upon pooling positive likelihood ratios when those with predisposition to disease were included (p < 0.001). However, upon pooling the positive or negative likelihood ratios for patients with sporadic pheochromocytoma (n = 191) or those at risk for sporadic pheochromocytoma (n = 718), no statistical heterogeneity was noted (p = 0.4). For sporadic subjects, the pooled positive likelihood ratio was 5.77 (95% CI = 4.90, 6.81) and the pooled negative likelihood ratio was 0.02 (95% CI = 0.01, 0.07). CONCLUSION: Negative plasma fractionated free metanephrine measurements are effective in ruling out pheochromocytoma. However, a positive test result only moderately increases suspicion of disease, particularly when screening for sporadic pheochromocytoma
