An Indian Ocean record for a porcellanid crab, Raphidopus ciliatus Stimpson, 1958

Several specimens of a porcellanid crab Raphidopus ciliatus are being reported for the first time from the northern Arabian Sea, extending the range of the species into the Indian Ocean. Specimens were found in by-catches landing at fish harbour, four specimens were recovered from stomachs of noncommercial fish, Batrachus grunniens. Salient features of the species are described. Distribution and abundance of cirripede larvae (Cirripedia: Thoracica) in the northern Arabian Sea

Cirripede larvae obtained in the zooplankton samples of the North Arabian Sea Ecological and Environmental Research (NASEER) cruise I (January, 1992) have been studied for their distribution and abundance. They were collected in the northern Arabian Sea waters (22°51'N to 24°58'N, 60°05'E to 65°59'E). Thirty- two samples were taken at 18 stations. The maximum number of larvae were collected from a station near Indus cone (Sta. 8), whereas an off shore station (Sta. 37) and one near the Makran coast (Sta. 60) had poor representation. Regular coastal collections from Manora Channel (24°48'N, 66°59'E), during the study period of one year (1994), have been also included to supplement the NASEER samples. Only one naupliar stage (VI) and a cyprid stage were identified. Relative abundance in day and night samples were also studied

Recovery of a leucosid crab Nursia abbreviata Bell, 1855 from Arabian Sea fish

On two occasions Nursia abbreviata Bell, 1855 has been recovered from the stomachs of Batrochus grunniens (Linnaeus, 1758) caught with commercial fish. Nursia abbreviata has been previously recorded from Karachi by Alcock (1896). The present specimens afford the first subsequent record of the species from the region, and are represented by only two males recovered from fish stomachs. The only other species of the genus from Pakistan is N. Rubifera Muller, 1866 which is common in shore collections (Tirmizi and Kazmi, 1988). It is compiled from the specimens available to us and those which are in the literature. An introduction to the class Malacostraca and key to the identification of subclasses, superorders and orders is given. Al the key characters are illustrated. The study of food preference is necessitated by the need to promote coastal culture of shrimps in Pakistan. The cultured Penaeus monodon was selected for study. A new species of Cyphocarcinus and a new record of Macropodia formosa Rathbun (Crustacea, Decapoda, Majidae) from Pakistan

The present paper includes a new species and a new record of majid crabs. The new species is referable to the genus Cyphocarcinus, subfamily Mithracinae of which only the genus Micippa was known from the region. Macropodia formosa Rathbun is being recorded for the first time from Karachi and belongs to the subfamily Inachinae. Both the species are described and illustrated. The new species is compared with its allied species

A new distributional record of Zozymodes cavipes (Dana, 1852) (Crustacea; Decapoda) from the coastal waters of Pakistan

One male and one female of Zozymodes cavipes (Dana, 1852) have revently been collected from the rocky shores near Karachi; the species is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region. It is, however, being reported for the first time from the pakistani coast of the northern Arabian Sea and thus fills the gap in the known distribution of the species. The pakistani material is housed in the Marine Reference Collection Centre, University of Karachi. The specimens are briefly descibed below. Only restricted synonym is given

Note on Nematopalaemon tenuipes (Henderson, 1893) (Crustacea:Palaemonidae) from the Pakistan coast of Arabian Sea

On a few occasions palaemonid shrimps turned up in the collections from the Karachi fish harbour. The specimens resembled Nematopalaemon tenuipes (Henderson, 1893) but for the walking legs which were invariably missing or incomplete, in the latter case the dactyli were broken at or just near the base. The only reference from Pakistan is in context to its distribution (Holthuis and Miguel, 1984). The abbreviation cl. is used in the text for the carapace length measuring from the orbit to the posterior margin of the carapace

Occurrence of four Xanthid (Brachyura) crabs in Karachi waters (northern Arabian Sea)

Four Xanthid crabs, namely Euxanthus exsculptus (Herbst), Halimede ochtodes (Herbst), Medaeops edwardsi Guinot, and Neolimera intermadia Odhner, previously not known from the northern Arabian Sea are being reported. Each species is briefly described and illustrated

A northern Indian Ocean record of a bopyrid, Parapenaeon japonica (Thielemann, 1910) parasitic on species of penaeid prawns (Penaeus)

A female of Penaeus merguiensis de Man collected from Karachi fish harbour (8 May, 1993) was with a large specimen of bopyrid in its right gill chamber. Since this was the second record (see Tirmizi and Bashir, 1973) of a bopyrid from a species other than Parapenauopsis stylifera H. Milne-Edwards the specimen was examined out of curiosity
