Use electrochemistry to charge the next dynamic thermal metamaterials
Electrochemistry has enabled a wide range of important energy technologies such as fuel cells and batteries, emerging as a powerful tool to achieve active materials and devices with novel applications. In this Perspective, we highlight the great potential of electrochemistry in propelling the next generation of dynamic thermal metamaterials with a focus on thermal radiation applications. After a brief introduction of the mechanisms of electrochemistry to change material properties, we discuss the possibilities of achieving highly tunable thermal radiation features by electrochemically manipulating the carrier densities of plasmonic materials. Recent studies in the intersections between electrochemistry, metamaterials, and thermal radiation applications are reviewed, indicating an emerging research direction incorporating these three fields — electrochemically dynamic thermal metamaterials. Towards this direction, we anticipate a promising pathway of employing conducting polymers and point out its remarkable opportunities and potential challenges. We hope this perspective could encourage more researchers to contribute to the development of this interdisciplinary field targeting the next energy technologies and applications
Lightly Weighted Automatic Audio Parameter Extraction for the Quality Assessment of Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice
The Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice is a widely employed
tool in clinical voice quality assessment that is significant for streaming
communication among clinical professionals and benchmarking for the
determination of further treatment. Currently, because the assessment relies on
experienced clinicians, it tends to be inconsistent, and thus, difficult to
standardize. To address this problem, we propose to leverage lightly weighted
automatic audio parameter extraction, to increase the clinical relevance,
reduce the complexity, and enhance the interpretability of voice quality
assessment. The proposed method utilizes age, sex, and five audio parameters:
jitter, absolute jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), and zero
crossing. A classical machine learning approach is employed. The result reveals
that our approach performs similar to state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods, and
outperforms the latent representation obtained by using popular audio
pre-trained models. This approach provide insights into the feasibility of
different feature extraction approaches for voice evaluation. Audio parameters
such as jitter and the HNR are proven to be suitable for characterizing voice
quality attributes, such as roughness and strain. Conversely, pre-trained
models exhibit limitations in effectively addressing noise-related scorings.
This study contributes toward more comprehensive and precise voice quality
evaluations, achieved by a comprehensively exploring diverse assessment

Weekly and Holiday-Related Patterns of Panic Attacks in Panic Disorder: A Population-Based Study
Background: While chronobiological studies have reported seasonal variation in panic attacks (PA) episodes, information on the timing of PA by week-days may enable better understanding of the triggers of PA episodes and thereby provide pointers for suitable interventional approaches to minimize PA attacks. This study investigated weekly variation in potential PA admissions including associations with holidays using a population-based longitudinal, administrative claims-based dataset in an Asian population.
Methods: This study used ambulatory care data from the ‘‘Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. We identified 993 patients with panic disorder (PD), and they had 4228 emergency room (ER) admissions for potential PA in a 3-year period between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2011. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine associations between the potential PA admissions and holidays/weekend days/work-days of the week.
Results: The daily mean number of potential PA admissions was 3.96 (standard deviation 2.05). One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in potential PA admissions by holiday and day of the week (p,0.001). Daily frequencies showed a trough on Wednesday-Thursday, followed by a sharp increase on Saturday and a peak on Sunday. Potential PA admissions were higher than the daily mean for the sample patients by 29.4% and 22.1%, respectively on Sundays and holidays. Furthermore, the weekly variations were similar for females and males, although females always had higher potential PA admissions on both weekdays and holidays than the males.
Conclusions: We found that potential PA admissions among persons with PD varied systematically by day of the week, with a significant peak on weekends and holidays
E2F transcription factor 1 overexpression as a poor prognostic factor in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinomas
AbstractNasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an endemic head and neck epithelial malignancy in Southeastern Asia and Taiwan. The E2 factor (E2F) family of transcription factors is downstream targets of the retinoblastoma protein 1. The E2F family of transcription factors is the key regulator of genes involved in cell cycle progression, cell fate determination, DNA damage repair and apoptosis. E2F1 is unique in that it contributes both to the control of cellular proliferation and cellular death. However, the expression of E2F1 protein and its clinicopathological associations in patients with NPC are yet to be evaluated. Immunoexpression of E2F1 was retrospectively assessed in biopsies of 124 consecutive NPC patients without initial distant metastasis and treated with consistent guidelines. The outcomes were correlated with clinicopathological features and patient survivals. Results indicated that high E2F1 protein level (50%) was correlated with primary tumor (p < 0.001) and stage (p = 0.002; 7th American Joint Committee on Cancer). In multivariate analyses, high E2F1 expression emerged as an independent prognosticator for worse disease-specific survival (p = 0.003), distal metastasis-free survival (p = 0.003), and local recurrence-free survival (p = 0.039). In conclusion, high E2F1 protein level is common, associated with adverse prognosticators, and might confer tumor aggressiveness through tumor cell proliferation and metastasis
High ERCC1 expression predicts cisplatin-based chemotherapy resistance and poor outcome in unresectable squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck in a betel-chewing area
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study was to evaluate the effect of excision repair cross-complementation group 1(ERCC1) expression on response to cisplatin-based induction chemotherapy (IC) followed by concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) in locally advanced unresectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fifty-seven patients with locally advanced unresectable HNSCC who received cisplatin-based IC followed by CCRT from January 1, 2006 through January 1, 2008. Eligibility criteria included presence of biopsy-proven HNSCC without a prior history of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess ERCC1 expression in pretreatment biopsy specimens from paraffin blocks. Clinical parameters, including smoking, alcohol consumption and betel nuts chewing, were obtained from the medical records.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 12-month progression-free survival (PFS) and 2-year overall survival (OS) rates of fifty-seven patients were 61.1% and 61.0%, respectively. Among these patients, thirty-one patients had low ERCC1 expression and forty-one patients responded to IC followed by CCRT. Univariate analyses showed that patients with low expression of ERCC1 had a significantly higher 12-month PFS rates (73.3% vs. 42.3%, p < 0.001) and 2-year OS (74.2 vs. 44.4%, p = 0.023) rates. Multivariate analysis showed that for patients who did not chew betel nuts and had low expression of ERCC1 were independent predictors for prolonged survival.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study suggest that a high expression of ERCC1 predict a poor response and survival to cisplatin-based IC followed by CCRT in patients with locally advanced unresectable HNSCC in betel nut chewing area.</p
Green tea extract supplementation ameliorates CCl4-induced hepatic oxidative stress, fibrosis, and acute-phase protein expression in rat
Background/PurposeWe evaluated the long-term effects of green tea extract (GTE) supplementation on oxidative stress, biliary acute phase protein expression, and liver function in CCl4-induced chronic liver injury.MethodsWe evaluated the antioxidant activity of GTE in comparison with those of vitamin C, vitamin E, and β-carotene in vitro by using an ultrasensitive chemiluminescence analyzer. Chronic liver injury was induced by intraperitoneally administering carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) (1mL/kg body weight, twice weekly) to female Wistar rats for 8 weeks. The effects of low (4mg/kg body weight per day) and high (20mg/kg body weight per day) doses of intragastric GTE on CCl4-induced liver dysfunction and fibrosis were examined by measuring the bile and blood reactive oxygen species levels and biochemical parameters by using Western blot and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis techniques.ResultsGTE has greater scavenging activity against O2–, H2O2, and Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) in vitro than vitamin C, vitamin E, and β-carotene do. In vivo, CCl4 markedly increased bile and blood reactive oxygen species production, lipid accumulation, number of infiltrated leukocytes, fibrosis, hepatic hydroxyproline content, and plasma alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, and reduced plasma albumin levels. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that CCl4 increased the acute-phase expression of six biliary proteins and decreased hepatic B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), catalase, and CuZn superoxide dismutase protein expression. GTE supplementation attenuated CCl4-enhanced oxidative stress, levels of biochemical parameters, pathology, and acute-phase protein secretion, and preserved antioxidant/antiapoptotic protein expression.ConclusionGTE supplementation attenuates CCl4-induced hepatic oxidative stress, fibrosis, acute phase protein excretion, and hepatic dysfunction via the antioxidant and antiapoptotic defense mechanisms
A mutant tat protein inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcription by targeting the reverse transcription complex
Previously, we reported that a mutant of Tat referred to as Nullbasic inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcription although the mechanism of action is unknown. Here we show that Nullbasic is a reverse transcriptase (RT) binding protein that targets the reverse transcription complex rather than directly inhibiting RT activity. An interaction between Nullbasic and RT was observed by using coimmunoprecipitation and pulldown assays, and a direct interaction was measured by using a biolayer interferometry assay. Mixtures of recombinant 6 x His-RT and Nullbasic-FLAG-V5-6 x His at molar ratios of up to 1:20,000 did not inhibit RT activity in standard homopolymer primer template assays. An analysis of virus made by cells that coexpressed Nullbasic showed that Nullbasic copurified with virus particles, indicating that it was a virion protein. In addition, analysis of reverse transcription complexes (RTCs) isolated from cells infected with wild type or Nullbasic-treated HIV-1 showed that Nullbasic reduced the levels of viral DNA in RTC fractions. In addition, a shift in the distribution of viral DNA and CAp24 to less-dense non-RTC fractions was observed, indicating that RTC activity from Nullbasic-treated virus was impaired. Further analysis showed that viral cores isolated from Nullbasic-treated HIV undergo increased disassembly in vitro compared to untreated HIV-1. To our knowledge, this is the first description of an antiviral protein that inhibits reverse transcription by targeting the RTC and affecting core stability
