Coupled-channels analysis of the O+Pb fusion barrier distribution
Analyses using simplified coupled-channels models have been unable to
describe the shape of the previously measured fusion barrier distribution for
the doubly magic O+Pb system. This problem was investigated by
re-measuring the fission excitation function for O+Pb with
improved accuracy and performing more exact coupled-channels calculations,
avoiding the constant-coupling and first-order coupling approximations often
used in simplified analyses. Couplings to the single- and 2-phonon states of
Pb, correctly taking into account the excitation energy and the phonon
character of these states, particle transfers, and the effects of varying the
diffuseness of the nuclear potential, were all explored. However, in contrast
to other recent analyses of precise fusion data, no satisfactory simultaneous
description of the shape of the experimental barrier distribution and the

Dopaminergic and serotonergic alterations in plasma in three groups of dystonia patients
Introduction: In dystonia, dopaminergic alterations are considered to be responsible for the motor symptoms. Recent attention for the highly prevalent non-motor symptoms suggest also a role for serotonin in the pathophysiology. In this study we investigated the dopaminergic, serotonergic and noradrenergic metabolism in blood samples of dystonia patients and its relation with (non-)motor manifestations. Methods: Concentrations of metabolites of dopaminergic, serotonergic and noradrenergic pathways were measured in platelet-rich plasma in 41 myoclonus-dystonia (M-D), 25 dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD), 50 cervical dystonia (CD) patients and 55 healthy individuals. (Non-)motor symptoms were assessed using validated instruments, and correlated with concentrations of metabolites. Results: A significantly higher concentration of 3-methoxytyramine (0.03 vs. 0.02 nmol/L, p < 0.01), a metabolite of dopamine, and a reduced concentration of tryptophan (50 vs. 53 μmol/L, p = 0.03), the precursor of serotonin was found in dystonia patients compared to controls. The dopamine/levodopa ratio was higher in CD patients compared to other dystonia groups (p < 0.01). Surprisingly, relatively high concentrations of levodopa were found in the untreated DRD patients. Low concentrations of levodopa were associated with severity of dystonia (rs = −0.3, p < 0.01), depression (rs = −0.3, p < 0.01) and fatigue (rs = −0.2, p = 0.04). Conclusion: This study shows alterations in the dopaminergic and serotonergic metabolism of patients with dystonia, with dystonia subtype specific changes. Low concentrations of levodopa, but not of serotonergic metabolites, were associated with both motor and non-motor symptoms. Further insight into the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in dystonia with a special attention to the kinetics of enzymes involved in these pathways, might lead to better treatment options
Two randomized crossover multicenter studies investigating gastrointestinal symptoms after bread consumption in individuals with noncoeliac wheat sensitivity: do wheat species and fermentation type matter?
Background: Many individuals reduce their bread intake due to the belief that wheat is the cause of their gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Different grains and processing methods may impact tolerability.
Objective: We investigated the effects of six different types of bread on GI symptoms in individuals with self-reported non-coeliac wheat sensitivity (NCWS).
Methods: Two parallel randomised double-blind crossover multicentre studies were conducted. NCWS individuals, in whom coeliac disease and wheat allergy were ruled out, received five slices of (study A, n=20) yeast fermented (YF) or (study B, n=20) sourdough fermented (SF) bread made of bread wheat, spelt or emmer on three separate intervention days. Each test day was preceded by a run-in period of 3 days and separated by a wash-out period of at least 7 days. GI symptoms were evaluated by change in symptom score (test day minus average of the 3-day run-in period) on a 0-100mm visual analogue scale (delta VAS). Responders were defined as an increase in delta VAS of at least 15mm for overall GI symptoms, abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, bloating and/or flatulence.
Results: The overall change in GI symptoms did not differ between breads of different grains (YF p=0.267; SF p=0.144). The number of responders was also comparable for both YF (6 to wheat, 5 to spelt, and 7 to emmer, p=0.761) and SF breads (9 to wheat, 7 to spelt, and 8 to emmer, p=0.761).
Conclusion: The majority of NCWS individuals experienced GI symptoms for at least one of the breads, but on a group level, no differences were found between different grain types for either YF or SF breads.

Crystal size and oxygen segregation for polycrystalline GaN
The grain size for polycrystallineGaN,grown in low-temperature gallium-rich conditions, is shown to be correlated to the oxygen content of the films. Films with lower oxygen content were observed to have larger crystals with an increased tendency to a single-preferred crystal orientation.Elastic recoil detection analysis with heavy ions (i.e., 200 MeV ¹⁹⁷Au ions) was used to determine the composition of the GaN films grown for the study, including the hydrogen, carbon, gallium, nitrogen, and oxygen content. Atomic force microscopy and x-ray diffraction were used to study the sample morphology. From these measurements, the available surface area of the films was found to be sufficient for a significant proportion of the oxygen present in the films to segregate at the grain boundaries. This interpretation is consistent with earlier theoretical studies of the formation and segregation of the VGa-(ON)₃defect complex at dislocation sites in gallium-rich GaN. Breakup of F on Pb near the Coulomb barrier
Angular distributions of oxygen produced in the breakup of F incident
on a Pb target have been measured around the grazing angle at beam
energies of 98 and 120 MeV. The data are dominated by the proton stripping
mechanism and are well reproduced by dynamical calculations. The measured
breakup cross section is approximately a factor of 3 less than that of fusion
at 98 MeV. The influence of breakup on fusion is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Dynamic study on fusion reactions for Ca+Zr around Coulomb barrier
By using the updated improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model in which a
surface-symmetry potential term has been introduced for the first time, the
excitation functions for fusion reactions of Ca+Zr at
energies around the Coulomb barrier have been studied. The experimental data of
the fusion cross sections for Ca+Zr have been reproduced
remarkably well without introducing any new parameters. The fusion cross
sections for the neutron-rich fusion reactions of Ca+Zr around
the Coulomb barrier are predicted to be enhanced compared with a
non-neutron-rich fusion reaction. In order to clarify the mechanism of the
enhancement of the fusion cross sections for neutron-rich nuclear fusions, we
pay a great attention to study the dynamic lowering of the Coulomb barrier
during a neck formation. The isospin effect on the barrier lowering is
investigated. It is interesting that the effect of the projectile and target
nuclear structure on fusion dynamics can be revealed to a certain extent in our
approach. The time evolution of the N/Z ratio at the neck region has been
firstly illustrated. A large enhancement of the N/Z ratio at neck region for
neutron-rich nuclear fusion reactions is found.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures,3 table
Quantum Tunneling in Nuclear Fusion
Recent theoretical advances in the study of heavy ion fusion reactions below
the Coulomb barrier are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to new ways of
analyzing data, such as studying barrier distributions; new approaches to
channel coupling, such as the path integral and Green function formalisms; and
alternative methods to describe nuclear structure effects, such as those using
the Interacting Boson Model. The roles of nucleon transfer, asymmetry effects,
higher-order couplings, and shape-phase transitions are elucidated. The current
status of the fusion of unstable nuclei and very massive systems are briefly

Influence of Receptor Polymorphisms on the Response to alpha-Adrenergic Receptor Blockers in Pheochromocytoma Patients
Background: Presurgical treatment with an α-adrenergic receptor blocker is recommended to antagonize the catecholamine-induced α-adrenergic receptor mediated vasoconstriction in patients with pheochromocytoma or sympathetic paraganglioma (PPGL). There is, however, a considerable interindividual variation in the dose-response relationship regarding the magnitude of blood pressure reduction or the occurrence of side effects. We hypothesized that genetically determined differences in α-adrenergic receptor activity contribute to this variability in dose-response relationship. Methods: Thirty-one single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the α1A, α1B, α1D adrenoreceptor (ADRA1A, ADRA1B, ADRA1D) and α2A, α2B adrenoreceptor (ADRA2A, ADRA2B) genes were genotyped in a group of 116 participants of the PRESCRIPT study. Haplotypes were constructed after determining linkage disequilibrium blocks. Results: The ADRA1B SNP rs10515807 and the ADRA2A SNPs rs553668/rs521674 were associated with higher dosages of α-adrenergic receptor blocker (p < 0.05) and with a higher occurrence of side effects (rs10515807) (p = 0.005). Similar associations were found for haplotype block 6, which is predominantly defined by rs10515807. Conclusions: This study suggests that genetic variability of α-adrenergic receptor genes might be associated with the clinically observed variation in beneficial and adverse therapeutic drug responses to α-adrenergic receptor blockers. Further studies in larger cohorts are needed to confirm our observations
