Liquid antiferromagnets in two dimensions
It is shown that, for proper symmetry of the parent lattice,
antiferromagnetic order can survive in two-dimensional liquid crystals and even
isotropic liquids of point-like particles, in contradiction to what common
sense might suggest. We discuss the requirements for antiferromagnetic order in
the absence of translational and/or orientational lattice order. One example is
the honeycomb lattice, which upon melting can form a liquid crystal with
quasi-long-range orientational and antiferromagnetic order but short-range
translational order. The critical properties of such systems are discussed.

Doping dependence of the Neel temperature in Mott-Hubbard antiferromagnets: Effect of vortices
The rapid destruction of long-range antiferromagnetic order upon doping of
Mott-Hubbard antiferromagnetic insulators is studied within a generalized
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization group theory in accordance with
recent calculations suggesting that holes dress with vortices. We calculate the
doping-dependent Neel temperature in good agreement with experiments for
high-Tc cuprates. Interestingly, the critical doping where long-range order
vanishes at zero temperature is predicted to be xc ~ 0.02, independently of any

The Fringe Reading Facility at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Stroemungsforschung
A Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used for optical flow measurements in a transonic wind tunnel. Holographic interferograms are reconstructed by illumination with a He-Ne-laser and viewed by a video camera through wide angle optics. This setup was used for investigating industrial double exposure holograms of truck tires in order to develop methods of automatic recognition of certain manufacturing faults. Automatic input is achieved by a transient recorder digitizing the output of a TV camera and transferring the digitized data to a PDP11-34. Interest centered around sequences of interferograms showing the interaction of vortices with a profile and subsequent emission of sound generated by this process. The objective is the extraction of quantitative data which relates to the emission of noise
Impedance of a Rectangular Beam Tube with Small Corrugations
We consider the impedance of a structure with rectangular, periodic
corrugations on two opposing sides of a rectangular beam tube. Using the method
of field matching, we find the modes in such a structure. We then limit
ourselves to the the case of small corrugations, but where the depth of
corrugation is not small compared to the period. For such a structure we
generate analytical approximate solutions for the wave number , group
velocity , and loss factor for the lowest (the dominant) mode
which, when compared with the results of the complete numerical solution,
agreed well. We find: if , where is the beam pipe width and is
the beam pipe half-height, then one mode dominates the impedance, with
( is the depth of corrugation),
, and , which (when replacing by
) is the same scaling as was found for small corrugations in a {\it round}
beam pipe. Our results disagree in an important way with a recent paper of
Mostacci {\it et al.} [A. Mostacci {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. ST-AB, {\bf 5},
044401 (2002)], where, for the rectangular structure, the authors obtained a
synchronous mode with the same frequency , but with .
Finally, we find that if is large compared to then many nearby modes

A theoretical study of the tautomerism and vibrational spectra of 4,5-diamine-2,6-dimercaptopyrimidine
The 4,5-diamine-2,6-dimercaptopyrimidine (DADMcP) compound is an interesting multifunctional species exhibiting a rather complex tautomerism, encompassing nine tautomeric forms. Investigation of tautomerism in this compound has been carried out by means of FTIR spectroscopy, in association with ab-initio HF/SCF and DFT calculations. According to this study three tautomers are energetically favored; the thione form being the most stable one. The theoretical vibrational spectra of such tautomeric forms have been successfully simulated by means of DFT calculations, allowing the elucidation and assignment of the complex composition of the vibrational bands observed for the mixture of isomers.A 4,5-diamina-2,6-dimercaptopirimidina (DADMcP) constitui uma molécula multifuncional que apresenta uma tautomeria bastante complexa, com nove formas isoméricas possíveis. O estudo da tautomeria nesse composto foi realizado por meio da espectroscopia FTIR em associação com cálculos ab-initio HF/SCF e DFT. De acordo com os resultados teóricos, três tautômeros são favorecidos energeticamente, sendo a tiona a forma a mais estável. Os espectros vibracionais das formas tautoméricas mais estáveis foram simulados através de cálculos de DFT, permitindo a atribuição e elucidação do quadro complexo de bandas vibracionais observado experimentalmente, envolvendo a mistura de isômeros
Theory for transport through a single magnetic molecule: Endohedral N@C60
We consider transport through a single N@C60 molecule, weakly coupled to
metallic leads. Employing a density-matrix formalism we derive rate equations
for the occupation probabilities of many-particle states of the molecule. We
calculate the current-voltage characteristics and the differential conductance
for N@C60 in a break junction. Our results reveal Coulomb-blockade behavior as
well as a fine structure of the Coulomb-blockade peaks due to the exchange
coupling of the C60 spin to the spin of the encapsulated nitrogen atom.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, v2: version as publishe
Thermodynamic Phase Diagram of the Quantum Hall Skyrmion System
We numerically study the interacting quantum Hall skyrmion system based on
the Chern-Simons action. By noticing that the action is invariant under global
spin rotations in the spin space with respect to the magnetic field direction,
we obtain the low-energy effective action for a many skyrmion system.
Performing extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we establish the

15-Year Follow-up of Neuromuscular Function in Patients With Unilateral Nonreconstructed Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Initially Treated With Rehabilitation and Activity Modification: A Longitudinal Prospective Study.
Background: It has been suggested that neuromuscular function is of importance in the overall outcome after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Hypothesis: Good neuromuscular function can be achieved and maintained over time in subjects with ACL injury treated with rehabilitation and activity modification but without reconstructive surgery. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: One hundred consecutive patients (42 women and 58 men) with acute ACL injury at a nonprofessional, recreational or competitive activity level were assessed 1, 3, and 15 years after injury. Their mean age at inclusion was 26 years (range, 15-43 years). All patients initially underwent rehabilitation and were advised to modify their activity level, especially by avoiding contact sports. Patients with recurrent giving-way episodes or secondary meniscal injuries that required fixation were subsequently excluded and underwent reconstruction of the ACL. Sixty-seven patients (71% of those available for follow-up) with unilateral nonreconstructed injury remained at the 15-year follow-up. Fifty-six of these 67 patients were examined with the single-legged hop test for distance and knee muscle strength. The limb symmetry index (LSI), calculated by dividing the result for the injured leg by that of the uninjured leg and multiplying by 100, was used for comparisons over time (paired t test). Results: The LSI for the single-legged hop test was higher at the 3-year follow-up (mean, 98.5%; standard deviation [SD], 7.6%) than at the 15-year follow-up (mean, 94.8%; SD, 10.5%) (mean difference, -3.7%; 95% confidence interval [Cl], -6.1% to -1.2%; P = .004). The LSI for isometric extension was higher at the 15-year follow-up (mean, 97.2%; SD, 13.7%) than at the 1-year follow-up (mean, 88.2%; SD, 15.4%) (mean difference, 9.0%; 95% Cl, 3.7% to 14.4%; P = .001). At the 15-year follow-up, between 69% and 85% of the patients had an LSI >= 90%. Conclusions: Good functional performance and knee muscle strength can be achieved and maintained over time in the majority of patients with ACL injury treated with rehabilitation and early activity modification but without reconstructive surgery
Effect of the Equivalence Between Topological and Electric Charge on the Magnetization of the Hall Ferromagnet
The dependence on temperature of the spin magnetization of a two-dimensional
electron gas at filling factor unity is studied. Using classical Monte Carlo
simulations we analyze the effect that the equivalence between topological and
electrical charge has on the the behavior of the magnetization. We find that at
intermediate temperatures the spin polarization increases in a thirty per cent
