    ePortfolios: models and implementation

    This paper explores the use of ePortfolio tools to support teaching, learning and the personal and professional development of postgraduate students at the Institute of Education, University of London (IOE). The needs of tutors and students are considered alongside the affordances and limitations of specific tools in relation to these needs. The study involved five areas of postgraduate study at the IOE, one at PhD level, two at Masters level (MA in ICT in Education and MTeach) and two PGCE courses (PGCE in ICT and Post-Compulsory PGCE). Preliminary discussions with IOE staff revealed five common themes relating to the perceived purpose of an ePortfolio: model, ownership, collaboration, accessibility and support. The first theme relates to the definition of the ePortfolio, whilst the remaining themes address questions relating to ownership, control, use and user needs/development. In this paper, each of the themes and the questions raised within those areas are addressed in detail and a cross-comparative table of responses across each of five teaching scenarios is provided with levels of importance measured on a scale of 1 (low) to 4 (high)

    Mitigating the Effects of Partial Resource Failures for Cloud Providers

    Competition for users on a global market is fierce, forcing enterprises to provide for better, faster services while offering the same more cheaply. At the same time, users choose to remain oblivious of the infrastructure behind the service – only demanding that it works. Cloud service failures and inefficient management of such failures can result in significant financial cost, loss of reputation for providers, and drive key customers away. At the same time failure situations can never be completely avoided. To mitigate their effects we present a decision model for providers to help them decide which jobs to keep running and which to cancel in order to minimize loss of revenue and key customers during partial resource failures. The results of the evaluation of the model and its extension show its ability to significantly improve revenue. Furthermore the model can also help to reduce the number of cancelled jobs

    Serious Gaming for the Evaluation of Market Mechanisms

    Design science consists of two major design processes: building and evaluation. A wellexecuted evaluation of design artifacts is crucial to their success. Traditional evaluation tools have certain weaknesses because design artifacts include “wicked” problems. Serious Gaming can help to overcome these problems. To this end an online based cloud resource managing game is developed which simulates the implementation of a market mechanism and represents a new design artifact. This mechanism is a heuristic solution consisting of dynamic pricing and a priority policy. The aim of this research is to show that Serious Gaming complements traditional evaluation tools and improves the evaluation of market mechanisms. Therefore, a general guideline for designing Serious Games for evaluation is developed and a classification of Serious Gaming is established. After having collected sufficient data, future work will be to analyze players’ behavior and finally evaluate the market mechanism

    The London Pedagogy Planner (LPP) is a prototype for a collaborative online planning and design tool that supports lecturers in developing, analysing and sharing learning designs. The tool is based on a developing model of the components involved in learning design, and the critical relationships between them. As a decision tool, it makes the pedagogical design explicit as an output from the process, capturing it for testing, redesign, reuse and adaptation by the originator, or by others. The aim is to test the extent to which we can engage lecturers in reflecting on learning design, and make them part of the educational community that discovers how best to use Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). This paper describes the development of LPP, presents pedagogical benefits of visual representations of learning designs, and proposes an analytical approach to learning design based on these visual representations. The analytical approach is illustrated based on an initial evaluation with the lecturers

    RadixSpline: A Single-Pass Learned Index

    Recent research has shown that learned models can outperform state-of-the-art index structures in size and lookup performance. While this is a very promising result, existing learned structures are often cumbersome to implement and are slow to build. In fact, most approaches that we are aware of require multiple training passes over the data. We introduce RadixSpline (RS), a learned index that can be built in a single pass over the data and is competitive with state-of-the-art learned index models, like RMI, in size and lookup performance.     CLOUD SERVICE REVENUE MANAGEMENT

    Successful Internet service offerings can only thrive if customers are satisfied with service performance. While large service providers can usually cope with fluctuations of customer visits retaining acceptable Quality of Service, small and medium-sizes enterprises face a big challenge due to limited resources in the IT infrastructure. Popular services, such as justin.tv and SmugMug, rely on external resources provided by cloud computing providers in order to satisfy their customers demands at all times. The paradigm of cloud computing refers to the delivery model of computing services as a utility in a pay-as-you-go manner. In this paper, we provide and computationally evaluate decision models and policies that can help cloud computing providers increase their revenue under the realistic assumption of scarce resources and under both informational certainty and uncertainty of customers? resource requirement predictions. Our results show that in both cases under certainty and under uncertainty applying the dynamic pricing policy significantly increases revenue while using the client classification policy substantially reduces revenue. We also show that, for all policies, the presence of uncertainty causes losses in revenue; when the client classification policy is applied, losses can even amount to more than 8%

    Gold standard program for heavy smokers in a real-life setting

    Background: High-intensity smoking cessation programs generally lead to more continuous abstinence, however, lower rates of success have been reported among heavy smokers. The aim was to evaluate continuous abstinence among heavy smokers during the intensive 6-week Gold Standard Program (GSP) and to identify modifiable factors associated with continuous abstinence. Methods: In this nationwide clinical study based on 36,550 smokers attending an intensive cessation program in Denmark. Heavy smoking was defined as ≄7 points in the Fagerström Nicotine Dependency Test, smoking ≄20 cigarettes daily or ≄20 pack-years. Results: Overall, 28% had a Fagerström score ≄7 points, 58% smoked ≄20 cigarettes daily and 68% smoked ≄20 pack-years. Continuous abstinence was 33% in responders (6-months response rate: 78%); however, abstinence was approximately 1–6% lower in the heavy smokers than the overall population. Attending GSP with an individual format (vs. group/other, OR 1.23–1.44); in a hospital setting (vs. pharmacy/municipality services, OR 1.05–1.11); and being compliant (attending the planned meetings OR 4.36–4.89) were associated with abstinence. Abstinence decreased in a dose-dependent manner with increasing smoking severity. Conclusions: Abstinence after GSP was 1–6% lower in the heavy smokers than in the overall study population. Modifiable factors may be used for small improvements in continued abstinence. However attempts to improve compliance seemed especially promising
