DIVERSIFICATION ECONOMIES AND SPECIALISATION EFFICIENCIES IN A MIXED FOOD AND COFFEE SMALLHOLDER FARMING SYSTEM IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Smallholder farming systems in Papua New Guinea are characterised by an integrated set of cash cropping and subsistence food cropping activities. In the Highlands provinces, the subsistence food crop sub-system is dominated by sweet potato production. Coffee dominates the cash cropping sub-system, but a limited number of food crops are also grown for cash sale. The dynamics between sub-systems can influence the scope for complementarity between, and technical efficiency of, their operations, especially in light of the seasonality of demand for household labour and management inputs within the farming system. A crucial element of these dynamic processes is diversification into commercial agricultural production, which can influence factor productivity and the efficiency of crop production where smallholders maintain a strong production base in subsistence foods. Data are used on coffee and food crop production for 18 households in the Benabena district of Eastern Highlands Province to derive technical efficiency indices for each household over two years. A stochastic input distance function approach is used to establish whether diversification economies exist and whether specialisation in coffee, subsistence food or cash food production significantly influences technical efficiency on the sampled smallholdings. Diversification economies are weakly evident between subsistence food production and both coffee and cash food production, but diseconomies of diversification are discerned between coffee and cash food production. Signatures of the collapse and revival of a spin Schr\"{o}dinger cat state in a continuously monitored field mode
We study the effects of continuous measurement of the field mode during the
collapse and revival of spin Schr\"{o}dinger cat states in the Tavis-Cummings
model of N qubits (two-level quantum systems) coupled to a field mode. We show
that a compromise between relatively weak and relatively strong continuous
measurement will not completely destroy the collapse and revival dynamics while
still providing enough signal-to-noise resolution to identify the signatures of
the process in the measurement record. This type of measurement would in
principle allow the verification of the occurrence of the collapse and revival

An Investigation into the Merger of Stochastic Diffusion Search and Particle Swarm Optimisation
This study reports early research aimed at applying the powerful resource allocation mechanism deployed in Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS) to the Particle Swarm Optimiser (PSO) metaheuristic, effectively merging the two swarm intelligence algorithms. The results reported herein suggest that the hybrid algorithm, exploiting information sharing between particles, has the potential to improve the optimisation capability of conventional PSOs
An Investigation Into the use of Swarm Intelligence for an Evolutionary Algorithm Optimisation; The Optimisation Performance of Differential Evolution Algorithm Coupled with Stochastic Diffusion Search
The integration of Swarm Intelligence (SI) algorithms and Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) might be one of the future approaches in the Evolutionary Computation (EC). This work narrates the early research on using Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS) -- a swarm intelligence algorithm -- to empower the Differential Evolution (DE) -- an evolutionary algorithm -- over a set of optimisation problems. The results reported herein suggest that the powerful resource allocation mechanism deployed in SDS has the potential to improve the optimisation capability of the classical evolutionary algorithm used in this experiment. Efficiency and Productivity Analysis of Cooperative Dairy Plants in Haryana and Punjab States of India
Since the 1970s, the policy of Indian government has been to promote dairy development on the basis of the cooperative organisations. During the 1990s the dairy industry in India was liberalised. This study examines the impact of the liberalisation policy on the cooperative dairy plants in India. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the Fisher index approach are applied to measure economic efficiency and total productivity changes, respectively. The data involves 65 observations from a complete panel of 13 cooperative dairy plants from 1992/93 to 1996/97. Interpreting Dark Matter Direct Detection Independently of the Local Velocity and Density Distribution
We demonstrate precisely what particle physics information can be extracted
from a single direct detection observation of dark matter while making
absolutely no assumptions about the local velocity distribution and local
density of dark matter. Our central conclusions follow from a very simple
observation: the velocity distribution of dark matter is positive definite,
f(v) >= 0. We demonstrate the utility of this result in several ways. First, we
show a falling deconvoluted recoil spectrum (deconvoluted of the nuclear form
factor), such as from ordinary elastic scattering, can be "mocked up" by any
mass of dark matter above a kinematic minimum. As an example, we show that dark
matter much heavier than previously considered can explain the CoGeNT excess.
Specifically, m_chi < m_Ge} can be in just as good agreement as light dark
matter, while m_\chi > m_Ge depends on understanding the sensitivity of Xenon
to dark matter at very low recoil energies, E_R ~ 6 keVnr. Second, we show that
any rise in the deconvoluted recoil spectrum represents distinct particle
physics information that cannot be faked by an arbitrary f(v). As examples of
resulting non-trivial particle physics, we show that inelastic dark matter and
dark matter with a form factor can both yield such a rise
Macroscopic quantum computation using Bose-Einstein condensates
Quantum computation using qubits made of two component Bose-Einstein
condensates (BECs) is analysed. The use of BECs allows for an increase of
energy scales via bosonic enhancement, resulting in gate operations that can be
performed at a macroscopically large energy scale. The large energy scale of
the gate operations results in quantum algorithms that may be executed at a
time reduced by a factor of N, where N is the number of bosons per qubit. The
encoding of the qubits allows for no intrinsic penalty on decoherence times. We
