Alternative Denture Base Materials for Allergic Patients
Traditionally, a denture base is manufactured using a heat-cured acrylic resin. This type of resin was first used in dental labs in 1936, being a great step forward. Because of the many disadvantages as increased porosity, high water sorption, polymerization shrinkage, allergenic potential and citotoxicity due to the residual monomer, awkward flasking and packaging, and difficult processing, alternatives were continuously searched. Monomer-free and high-impact acrylics were developed, and gold plating of the denture base was experienced, in order to provide an alternative to allergic patients. Once polymers developed, new types of resins, such as polyamides (nylon), acetal, epoxy resins, styrene, polycarbonate, vinyl, urethane, polyether ether ketone (PEEK), became available on the dental market, accompanied by modern technologies, such as injection. CAD/CAM milled and 3D printed denture bases represent the present state of the art in this domain. Our chapter aims to present these alternative materials, which are safe to use in cases of allergic patients and guarantee a healthy oral environment and a high degree of comfort

Different types of thermoplastic injected resins, light-cured resins, or the versatile high-performance polymers are several choices of novel materials for dentures manufacturing. EFFECTS OF CANNABIDIOL EXTRACT FROM ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES ON ORAL HEALTH
Aim of the study The purpose of this study is to highlight the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes in the daily lives of the population. As more and more people, especially young individuals, are encouraged to choose this vice as less harmful than conventional cigarettes and are attracted by different flavours or strengths to choose it, dental professionals are compelled to sound the alarm about potential oral health issues, as well as overall health concerns.
Material and methods. The subjects of this study were divided into 3 categories: non-smokers, conventional cigarette smokers, and electronic cigarette smokers; saliva samples, both stimulated and resting, were collected from each. Saliva samples were taken to determine salivary flow, viscosity, and consistency of unstimulated saliva, resting saliva pH, stimulated saliva quantity, and buffering capacity of stimulated saliva. Additionally, the conventional cigarette smoker and electronic cigarette smoker groups will be proposed the use of electronic cigarettes, whose liquid will contain an essential oil of Cannabidiol (CBD). This is the active ingredient derived from the hemp plant and is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stems of the plant, being recognized for its impressive medicinal and antioxidant properties.
Results. The results indicated no significant differences in the average salivary pH values after CBD among the three groups. The mean buffering capacity of stimulated saliva at the initial evaluation was 8.71 for conventional cigarette smokers and 8.43 for electronic cigarette smokers. After using CBD-containing cigarettes, the average value reached 8.14 for both conventional cigarette smokers and electronic cigarette smokers.
Conclusions. Among conventional cigarette smokers, only one (14.3%) stated that they would replace their current cigarettes with Cannabidiol-based ones, while among electronic cigarette smokers, 4 (representing 57.1%) would switch to Cannabidiol-based cigarettes. None of the surveyed subjects reported mucosal lesions after using CBD-containing electronic cigarettes. Among conventional cigarette smokers, 28.6% stated that using CBD electronic cigarettes helped them relax, while among electronic cigarette smokers, 57.1% shared the same opinion. No significant differences were found in the average values of stimulated saliva quantity after CBD among groups. There are no significant differences between groups regarding the buffering capacity of stimulated saliva after CBD, confirming the limited implication of CBD in saliva. The evolution of salivary pH after using CBD cigarettes was not statistically significant for any of the groups
Additive Manufactured Polymers in Dentistry, Current State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives-A Review
3D-printing application in dentistry not only enables the manufacture of patient-specific devices and tissue constructs, but also allows mass customization, as well as digital workflow, with predictable lower cost and rapid turnaround times. 4D printing also shows a good impact in dentistry, as it can produce dynamic and adaptable materials, which have proven effective in the oral environment, under its continuously changing thermal and humidity conditions. It is expected to further boost the research into producing a whole tooth, capable to harmoniously integrate with the surrounding periodontium, which represents the ultimate goal of tissue engineering in dentistry. Because of their high versatility associated with the wide variety of available materials, additive manufacturing in dentistry predominantly targets the production of polymeric constructs. The aim of this narrative review is to catch a glimpse of the current state-of-the-art of additive manufacturing in dentistry, and the future perspectives of this modern technology, focusing on the specific polymeric materials
The Influence of Salivary pH on the Prevalence of Dental Caries
Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic oral disease, influencing the oral and systemic health of the individuals, being the result of the interaction of multiple factors, such as microbial agents, the oral environment, the salivary pH, and the host response. The main process that occurs in dental caries is the demineralization of the tooth enamel, process that is directly influenced by the salivary pH, exposing the dental structures to the action of pathological agents. The role of saliva in the etiology of dental caries is a major one, by influencing the homeostasis through the altering of its buffer capacity. The properties of saliva are influenced either by local pathogens or through a general mechanism with direct implications upon the salivary components. The alteration of the salivary pH, flow rate, and composition will further have repercussions upon the cariogenic activity, through a change of its physiochemical properties. Nevertheless, the salivary pH is strongly linked to the incidence of dental caries, any persistent imbalance due to various causes can be assessed as an indicator of the oral health status
NEW APPROACHES TO LASER TREATMENT FOR ORAL PERI-IMPLANT MUCOSITIS
Aim of the study The objective of this study is to examine the impact of treatment with two simultaneous lasers on implant mucositis. Material and methods A number of 40 patients (90 implants) were included in this research. They were allocated randomly in 2 groups. Results Both variables as Pocket depth around implants (if diminished under 6 mm of depth) and the absence of clinical signs of inflammation by means the absence of measured bleeding on probing at 6 months after performing the treatment were evaluated together as parameters evaluating the success of the performed treatment, and significantly better results were observed in first group of subjects at their evaluation
COVID-19 and Its Repercussions on Oral Health: A Review
In 2019, a new type of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, the causing agent of COVID-19, was first detected in Wuhan, China. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic. The manifestations of COVID-19 are mostly age-dependent and potentially more severe in cases with involved co-morbidities. The gravity of the symptoms depends on the clinical stage of the infection. The most common symptoms include runny nose and nasal congestion, anosmia, dysgeusia or hypogeusia, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, respiratory distress, fatigue, ocular symptoms, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. These systemic conditions are often accompanied by skin and mucosal lesions. Oral lesions reported in patients with COVID-19 include: herpex simplex, candidiasis, geographic tongue, aphthous-like ulcers, hemorrhagic ulcerations, necrotic ulcerations, white hairy tongue, reddish macules, erythematous surfaces, petechiae, and pustular enanthema. It is still unclear if these manifestations are a direct result of the viral infection, a consequence of systemic deterioration, or adverse reactions to treatments. Poor oral hygiene in hospitalized or quarantined COVID-19 patients should also be considered as an aggravating condition. This narrative review is focused on presenting the most relevant data from the literature regarding oral manifestations related to SARS-CoV-2, as well as the challenges faced by the dental system during this pandemic. A routine intraoral examination is recommended in COVID-19 patients, either suspected or confirmed, as, in certain cases, oral manifestations represent a sign of severe infection or even of a life-threatening condition. It is our belief that extensive knowledge of all possible manifestations, including oral lesions, in cases of COVID-19 is of great importance in the present uncertain context, including new, currently emerging viral variants with unknown future impact

The Impact of Hyper-Acute Inflammatory Response on Stress Adaptation and Psychological Symptoms of COVID-19 Patients
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection induces a significant inflammatory response that are amplified by persistent stress. The pathophysiology of mental illnesses is explored in terms of inflammatory processes. Thus, anxious, depressed, or psychotic episodes may occur as a result of metabolic and immunological imbalances, as a direct result of their effect on the central nervous system, or as a side effect of the COVID-19 medication protocols. As such, the primary objective of this research is to establish if the psychological profiles of COVID-19 patients change substantially according to illness severity. The secondary objective is to determine if particular biological inflammatory indicators are associated with anxiety, sadness, psychoticism, and paranoid ideation. A cross-sectional study was performed on 90 hospitalized patients admitted during a 3-month period in the COVID-19 unit. All patients received the COPE-60 and SCL-90R questionnaires. Clinical and paraclinical data were collected and the information was classified according to the severity of COVID-19.The hyper-acute inflammation encountered in patients with severe COVID-19 infection characterized 80.0% of patients using disengagement coping methods, significantly more than patients with mild or moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection severity (p-value = 0.012), respectively, 73.3% severe COVID-19 patients engaging in emotion-focused coping strategies based on the COPE-60 scale (p-value = 0.037). Additionally, it was determined that negative coping mechanisms (disengagement) and emotion-focused methods are independent risk factors for developing psychoticism symptoms following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, based on the SCL-90 questionnaire (OR = 2.07; CI = 1.44–3.01), respectively (OR = 2.92; CI = 1.44–3.01). Elevated white blood cells and monocytes and inflammatory markers, such as fibrinogen, procalcitonin, IL-6, and D-dimers, were also identified as risk factors for psychoticism symptoms in multivariate analysis. It is particularly important to consider the constant mental-state evaluation in patients with severe COVID-19 that might benefit from early intervention before psychotic symptoms onset
