    Designingan Adaptive PID Controller for Dissolved Oxygen Control of the Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment using Hedge Algebras

    In this paper, we present the design methodology of the coefficients of adjustment of classical PI controller based on hedge algebras approach (HA - Hedge Algebras) to improve the quality of operation of the system. The adjustment works online with a wide range of adjustment enough around the value calculated by empirical methods Ziegler - Nichols. Subjects selected for trial is the controller method for dissolved oxygen in the wastewater treatment system by activated sludge method. Through system simulation in Matlab or Simulink environment at some different reference values, the results have been evaluated for quality control shows that the response time and overshoot reduce significantly, static deviation level is small. Through these results, it can be tested on the control system for more complex subjects to evaluate the effectiveness of methods and practical applications on the industrial control systems

    Combination of Wavelet and MLP Neural Network for Emotion Recognition System

    Emotional recognition from the EEG signal is one of the areas in which many scientists around the world have concerned. Two important issues are EEG feature extraction and EEG classification. The wavelet transform method allows the extraction of nonlinear characteristics of the data from which it is possible to derive smaller feature vector than other methods. The MLP neural network has proven to be a very effective classification method. Thus, in this paper, the authors present one method to construct a highly accurate emotional recognition system by combining the two above methods.     The overall goal of the project is to understand the awareness or perceptions and practice of students of the High-quality English Studies program, School of Foreign Languages (SFL), Can Tho University (CTU), Vietnam when studying cultures of English-speaking countries (CESCs) to improve intercultural competence. The research on the perspectives or opinions of 200 High-quality English Studies students, 12 of them joining the semi-structured interview, about their awareness and practice through learning CESCs. The analysis would help the researcher understand the difficulties of students when studying cultural modules from English-speaking countries at SFL, CTU. The research results would suggest solutions to overcome the difficulties that students encounter, and at the same time provide factors that contribute to improving the intercultural competence of language students. Also, through the research results, despite many obstacles in the process of absorbing culture from cultural modules, students still retain their interest and love for the course-CESCs. However, it can be seen that the difficulty that many students often encounter is still cultural differences, thereby raising awareness of the need to learn cultures for students. Next is to design teaching materials to become more attractive and attractive, proactively find opportunities to communicate with foreigners.  Article visualizations

    CSA: Thực hành nông nghiệp thông minh với khí hậu ở Việt Nam

    During the last five years, Vietnam has been one of the countries most affected by climate change. Severe typhoons, flooding, cold spells, salinity intrusion, and drought have affected agriculture production across the country, from upland to lowland regions. Fortunately for Vietnam, continuous work in developing climate-smart agriculture has been occurring in research organizations and among innovative farmers and entrepreneurs. Application of various CSA practices and technologies to adapt to the impact of climate change in agriculture production have been expanding. However, there is a need to accelerate the scaling process of these practices and technologies in order to ensure growth of agriculture production and food security, increase income of farmers, make farming climate resilient, and contribute to global climate change mitigation. This book aims to provide basic information to researchers, managers, and technicians and extentionists at different levels on what CSA practices and technologies can be up scaled in different locations in Vietnam

    Anal human papillomavirus prevalence and risk factors among men who have sex with men in Vietnam.

    OBJECTIVES: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at risk of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers, while published data are scarce. This study determined HPV prevalence and risk factors in MSM in Vietnam to inform HPV prevention strategies in this key population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 799 MSM aged 16-50 years was conducted in Vietnam in 2017-2018. Information was collected on risk behaviours, and knowledge of HPV and anal cancer; rectal swabs were taken to detect anal HPV infection. An in-house polymerase chain reaction and Genoflow HPV array test kit were used for HPV detection and genotyping. RESULTS: The median age of the study participants was 25 years (range 18-52). Overall prevalence of any HPV and HPV16/18 infection was 32.3% and 11.0%, respectively. A higher prevalence of high-risk HPV infection to all 14 types tested was found in Ho Chi Minh City (30.9%) than in Hanoi (18.4%). High-risk HPV infection was associated with inconsistent condom use and history of engaging in sex under the influence of drugs (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 2.27; 95% CI, 1.48-10.67), as well as having multiple sexual partners (aOR, 1.01; 95% CI, 1.00-1.02). CONCLUSIONS: High-risk anal HPV infections in Vietnamese MSM were significantly associated with risky sexual behaviours. A targeted HPV vaccination strategy would have substantial benefit for MSM in Vietnam

    Safety and efficacy of fluoxetine on functional outcome after acute stroke (AFFINITY): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

    Background Trials of fluoxetine for recovery after stroke report conflicting results. The Assessment oF FluoxetINe In sTroke recoverY (AFFINITY) trial aimed to show if daily oral fluoxetine for 6 months after stroke improves functional outcome in an ethnically diverse population. Methods AFFINITY was a randomised, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial done in 43 hospital stroke units in Australia (n=29), New Zealand (four), and Vietnam (ten). Eligible patients were adults (aged ≥18 years) with a clinical diagnosis of acute stroke in the previous 2–15 days, brain imaging consistent with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and a persisting neurological deficit that produced a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 1 or more. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 via a web-based system using a minimisation algorithm to once daily, oral fluoxetine 20 mg capsules or matching placebo for 6 months. Patients, carers, investigators, and outcome assessors were masked to the treatment allocation. The primary outcome was functional status, measured by the mRS, at 6 months. The primary analysis was an ordinal logistic regression of the mRS at 6 months, adjusted for minimisation variables. Primary and safety analyses were done according to the patient's treatment allocation. The trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12611000774921. Findings Between Jan 11, 2013, and June 30, 2019, 1280 patients were recruited in Australia (n=532), New Zealand (n=42), and Vietnam (n=706), of whom 642 were randomly assigned to fluoxetine and 638 were randomly assigned to placebo. Mean duration of trial treatment was 167 days (SD 48·1). At 6 months, mRS data were available in 624 (97%) patients in the fluoxetine group and 632 (99%) in the placebo group. The distribution of mRS categories was similar in the fluoxetine and placebo groups (adjusted common odds ratio 0·94, 95% CI 0·76–1·15; p=0·53). Compared with patients in the placebo group, patients in the fluoxetine group had more falls (20 [3%] vs seven [1%]; p=0·018), bone fractures (19 [3%] vs six [1%]; p=0·014), and epileptic seizures (ten [2%] vs two [<1%]; p=0·038) at 6 months. Interpretation Oral fluoxetine 20 mg daily for 6 months after acute stroke did not improve functional outcome and increased the risk of falls, bone fractures, and epileptic seizures. These results do not support the use of fluoxetine to improve functional outcome after stroke

We investigated 123 OSA patients (17 mild, 23 moderate and, 83 severe OSA) in the department of respiratory diseases. Studied data included anthropometry, respiratory polygraphy, biological markers, spirometry, and multi-flow eNO measurements. Data analysis implied linear correlation, non-parametric ANOVA, and pair-wise comparison.Results: No significant difference could be found among 3 OSA severity subgroups for FENO at &ndash; four sampling flow rates (50&ndash; 350 mL/s). The bronchial production rate of NO (J&rsquo;awNO) was proportionally increased, with median values of 11.2, 33.9, and 36.2 in mild, moderate, and severe OSA, respectively (p=0.010). The alveolar concentration of NO (CANO) changed with a non-linear pattern; it was increased in moderate (6.49) vs mild (7.79) OSA but decreased in severe OSA (5.20, p = 0.015). The only correction that could be established between OSA severity and exhaled nitric oxide markers is through J&rsquo;AWNO (rho=0.25, p=0.02) and CANO (rho= 0.18, p=0.04). There was no significant correlation between FENO measured at three different flow rates and the OSA severity. We also found a weak but significant correlation between FENO 100 and averaged SpO2 (rho = 0.07, p= 0.03).Conclusion: The present study showed that J&rsquo;AWNO, which represents eNO derived from the central airway, is proportionally increased in more severe OSA, while eNO from alveolar space, indicated by CANO, was also associated with OSA severity and relatively lower in the most severe OSA patients.     Depression in Final-Year Medical Students in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: The Role of Career-Choice Motivation

    OBJECTIVES Depression in medical students is concerning, potentially fueled by many stressors including career choice-relating stress. Choosing Medicine is a life-long commitment, and low intrinsic motivation or excessive dependence on family can complicate this decision and adding stress throughout their training. This stress intensifies in the final year, as students lacking personal drive struggle to see themselves continuing the career. Given limited studies on this crucial topic in Asia and Vietnam, we explored direct linkage between career choice motivation and depression in final-year medical students. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 569 final-year students between June and July 2020. The Vietnamese Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) and 16-item CCM questionnaire were used as survey tools. Univariate analysis was used for descriptive statistics (absolute and relative frequency, mean (M), standard deviation (SD). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to explore the relationship between variables using STATA 5.1. RESULTS The depression among participants was about 24.6% (PHQ-9 cut-off ≥ 12). No difference in gender was found regarding depression. The most acknowledged motivator is securing employment (M = 4.14, SD = 1.02) and the least is parental wishes (M = 3.17, SD = 1.32). Familial influence on career choice significantly increased odds of having “ moderately-severe depression ” (OR = 1.17, 95% CI 1.04-1.32) and “ severe depression ” (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.10-1.68), whereas, career-choice motivators including satisfaction (OR = .76, 95% CI .60-.97), self-competence (OR = .80, 95% CI .66-.97) and career success (OR = .84, 95% CI .71-.99) were found to be protective factors for depression. CONCLUSIONS Roughly a quarter of final-year medical students encountered depression. Occupational security ranked as the primary motivator, with parental wish being the least. Familial influence heightened depression risk, while career prospects, satisfaction and self-efficacy acted as protective factors. Medical career paths should align with intrinsic motivations and personal interests for better mental health outcomes

    Methane Emission Factors from Vietnamese Rice Production: Pooling Data of 36 Field Sites for Meta-Analysis

    Rice production is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the national budget of many Asian countries, but the extent of emissions varies strongly across agro-environmental zones. It is important to understand these differences in order to improve the national GHG inventory and effectively target mitigation options. This study presents a meta-analysis of CH4 database emission factors (EFs) from 36 field sites across the rice growing areas of Vietnam and covering 73 cropping seasons. The EFs were developed from field measurements using the closed chamber technique. The analysis for calculating baseline EFs in North, Central and South Vietnam in line with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Tier 2 methodology was specified for the three cropping seasons being early-(E), mid-(M) and late-year (L) seasons. Calculated average CH4 EFs are given in kg ha−1 d−1 and reflect the distinct seasons in North (E: 2.21; L: 3.89), Central (E: 2.84; M+L: 3.13) and South Vietnam (E: 1.72; M: 2.80; L: 3.58). Derived from the available data of the edapho-hydrological zones of the Mekong River Delta, season-based EFs are more useful than zone-based EFs. In totality, these average EFs indicate an enormous variability of GHG emissions in Vietnamese rice production and represent much higher values than the IPCC default. Seasonal EFs from Vietnam exceeded IPCC defaults given for Southeast Asia corresponding to 160% (E), 240% (M) and 290% (L) of the medium value, respectively. View Full-Tex
