The Perceived Impact on Bullying of the Second Step Program at a Kindergarten-8th Grade School: A Program Evaluation

    Get PDF
This program evaluation examines the Second Step program at Baker School, a Kindergarten through 8th grade building located in Hillsborough, Illinois. The purpose of this evaluation is to determine the perceptions of impact the Second Step program has had on bullying at the school. The study employs a mixed-methods approach involving surveys and interviews with students, educators, and parents. This researcher determined that although bullying does not appear to be prevalent at Baker School, there is inconclusive evidence regarding the impact of the Second Step program. Major themes that emerged from this evaluation were a wide range of student experiences with bullying, students on both sides of bullying, and a lack of fidelity in the teaching of the Second Step Program. It is this researcher’s opinion that the school should continue to use Second Step but that educators, parents, and community members should collaborate to ensure even implementation of the program throughout the district

The Knowledge Economy/Society: The Latest Example of “Measurement Without Theory”?

    Get PDF
The world has embraced a set of concepts (knowledge driven growth) which are seen as the ‘core of future growth and wellbeing’ without any commonly agreed notion of what they are, how they might be measured, and crucially therefore, how they actually do (or might) affect economic growth and social wellbeing. The theory of how the mechanism works lacks important detail.Knowledge Economy; Knowledge Society; Human Capital; Theory of the Firm

“More than an Athlete”: Race, Sport, and Activism in Present Day America.

    Get PDF
The purpose of this dissertation is to uncover the vast infrastructure of athlete-activism that exists in contemporary society. The term infrastructure refers to the huge network of athlete-activists who are not necessarily united under one organization or structure, but nonetheless form an expansive framework of diverse, yet interconnected social justice activism. The broad scope of the thesis will look to shine a spotlight on actions that can often be overshadowed by more visible instances of political defiance. The dissertation will begin by charting the history of athlete-activism to establish that athletes today represent a long tradition of athletic involvement in the Black Freedom Struggle. Included in this historical context will be the period of the late twentieth century, this era is frequently dismissed as witnessing a decline in athlete-activism but using the juxtaposing examples of Craig Hodges and Michael Jordan the thesis will present this as an important era in creating the conditions for contemporary athlete-activism. The contemporary focus of the dissertation will take place in the period from the summer of 2016 up to the present day. This era has witnessed the emergence of a broad network of athlete-activism and the thesis will explore this network through four different strands of contemporary activism. Firstly, symbolic forms of activism that take place within the sporting arena. Secondly, the community-based grassroots activism of athletes. Following this, the case study of the 2020 election will show that athletes comprise a key group of voting rights activists in post-Shelby County America. Finally, the relationship between athletes and major corporations will show how athletes are navigating their corporate relationships to amplify their activism. The ultimate aim of this dissertation is to consider the vast infrastructure of athlete-activism that exists today and in doing so amplify the role of athlete-activists in the Black Lives Matter moment. This will complete the argument that athletes form a powerful bloc of activists in present day America and are much more than an addendum or attachment to the Black Lives Matter movement

Andragogical Methods and Teaching Strategies Used in Community College Composition Courses

    Get PDF
A midwestern community college utilized a corequisite model to accelerate students’ developmental education that allows adult learners to take developmental writing and English composition simultaneously. First-year composition instructors had no formal training at the college on andragogical methods and teaching strategies to foster successful completion in developmental and first-year composition courses. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the andragogical methods and teaching strategies of six successful full-time and adjunct developmental writing and first-year composition instructors as well as what these instructors need to improve their approaches with these students. The study was grounded in a conceptual framework including Knowles’s theory of andragogy, Tinto’s work in persistence, and models related to professional development. Deductive coding was used to group the instructors’ responses to interview questions about best practices for building relationships, determining students’ strengths and challenges, connecting students to resources, integrating learners’ prior experience and motivation, adapting instruction, bolstering critical thinking, and giving students feedback. Faculty also acknowledged three main areas as a need for their practice: a balanced workload, support, and a community. Once best practices and needs were identified, they were used to create a professional development program for new and returning faculty in the discipline. This study contributes to positive social change by providing more faculty with access to andragogical methods and teaching strategies that reach a larger portion of the marginalized student population, thereby giving those students a more equitable educational experience

Comparison of Different Methods of Distribution Factor Calculation

    Get PDF
The calculation of utilization factors relies on geometric multipliers to arrive at the distribution factors which give the fraction of the source flux arrives directly at each room surface. There are a number of possible assumptions that can be used to derive geometric multipliers each resulting in different values. This paper explores these differences and estimates the potential differences in utilisation values that may be expected. The key finding is the method in CIE 52 may no longer be appropriate
