Effect of Loss on Multiplexed Single-Photon Sources
An on-demand single-photon source is a key requirement for scaling many
optical quantum technologies. A promising approach to realize an on-demand
single-photon source is to multiplex an array of heralded single-photon sources
using an active optical switching network. However, the performance of
multiplexed sources is degraded by photon loss in the optical components and
the non-unit detection efficiency of the heralding detectors. We provide a
theoretical description of a general multiplexed single-photon source with
lossy components and derive expressions for the output probabilities of
single-photon emission and multi-photon contamination. We apply these
expressions to three specific multiplexing source architectures and consider
their tradeoffs in design and performance. To assess the effect of lossy
components on near- and long-term experimental goals, we simulate the
multiplexed sources when used for many-photon state generation under various
amounts of component loss. We find that with a multiplexed source composed of
switches with ~0.2-0.4 dB loss and high efficiency number-resolving detectors,
a single-photon source capable of efficiently producing 20-40 photon states
with low multi-photon contamination is possible, offering the possibility of
unlocking new classes of experiments and technologies.Comment: Journal versio
The contribution of fatigue and sleepiness to depression in patients attending the sleep laboratory for evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea
Purpose: A high prevalence of depressive symptomatology
has been reported amongst sufferers of obstructive sleep
apnea (OSA), but it remains unclear as to whether this is
due to their OSA or other factors associated with the
disorder. The current study aimed to assess the incidence
and aetiology of depression in a community sample of
individuals presenting to the sleep laboratory for diagnostic
assessment of OSA.
Methods: Forty-five consecutive individuals who presented to
the sleep laboratory were recruited; of those, 34 were
diagnosed with OSA, and 11 were primary snorers with no
clinical or laboratory features of OSA. Nineteen control
subjects were also recruited. Patients and controls completed
the Beck Depression Inventory, the Profile of Mood States
(POMS), and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to assess their
mood and sleepiness, prior to their polysomnography.
Results: All patients reported significantly more depressive
symptoms compared with healthy controls, regardless of their degree of OSA. There were no significant differences
between OSA patients and primary snorers on any of the
mood and self-rated sleepiness measures. Depression scores
were not significantly associated with any of the nocturnal
variables. Regression analysis revealed that the POMS
fatigue subscale explained the majority of the variance in
subjects' depression scores.
Conclusions: Fatigue was the primary predictor of the level
of depressive symptoms in patients who attended the sleep
laboratory, regardless of the level of severity of sleep disordered breathing. When considering treatment options,
practitioners should be aware of the concomitant occurrence
of depressive symptoms and fatigue in patients presenting with sleep complaints, which may not be due
to a sleep disorder
The applicability of self-regulation theories in sport : goal adjustment capacities, stress appraisals, coping and well-being among athletes
Objectives: We examined a model, informed by self-regulation theories, which included goal adjustment capacities, appraisals of challenge and threat, coping, and well-being. Design: Prospective. Methods: Two hundred and twelve athletes from the United Kingdom (n = 147) or Australia (n = 65), who played team (n = 135) or individual sports (n = 77), and competed at international (n = 7), national (n = 11), county (n = 67), club (n = 84), or beginner (n = 43) levels participated in this study. Participants completed measures of goal adjustment capacities and stress appraisals two days before competing. Athletes also completed questions on coping and well-being within three hours of their competition ending. Results: The way an athlete responds to an unattainable goal is associated with his or her well-being in the period leading up to and including the competition. Goal reengagement positively predicted well-being, whereas goal disengagement negatively predicted well-being. Further, goal reengagement was positively associated with challenge appraisals, which in turn was linked to task-oriented coping, and task-oriented coping positively associated with well-being. Conclusion: When highly-valued goals become unattainable, consultants could encourage athletes to seek out alternative approaches to achieve the same goal or help them develop a completely new goal
Integrated Silicon Photonics for High-Speed Quantum Key Distribution
Integrated photonics offers great potential for quantum communication devices
in terms of complexity, robustness and scalability. Silicon photonics in
particular is a leading platform for quantum photonic technologies, with
further benefits of miniaturisation, cost-effective device manufacture and
compatibility with CMOS microelectronics. However, effective techniques for
high-speed modulation of quantum states in standard silicon photonic platforms
have been limited. Here we overcome this limitation and demonstrate high-speed
low-error quantum key distribution modulation with silicon photonic devices
combining slow thermo-optic DC biases and fast (10~GHz bandwidth)
carrier-depletion modulation. The ability to scale up these integrated circuits
and incorporate microelectronics opens the way to new and advanced integrated
quantum communication technologies and larger adoption of quantum-secured
communications
Representations of Time Coordinates in FITS
In a series of three previous papers, formulation and specifics of the
representation of World Coordinate Transformations in FITS data have been
presented. This fourth paper deals with encoding time. Time on all scales and
precisions known in astronomical datasets is to be described in an unambiguous,
complete, and self-consistent manner. Employing the well--established World
Coordinate System (WCS) framework, and maintaining compatibility with the FITS
conventions that are currently in use to specify time, the standard is extended
to describe rigorously the time coordinate. World coordinate functions are
defined for temporal axes sampled linearly and as specified by a lookup table.
The resulting standard is consistent with the existing FITS WCS standards and
specifies a metadata set that achieves the aims enunciated above.Comment: FITS WCS Paper IV: Time. 27 pages, 11 table
The Dynamics of IT Project Status Reporting: A Self-Reinforcing Cycle of Distrust
Accurate project status reporting is important to avoid the problem of information technology (IT) project escalation and to successfully manage and deliver IT projects. One approach that some organizations have taken is to audit their IT projects to avoid surprises that are frequently associated with inaccurate status reporting. Little is known, however, about the effects that such auditing arrangements can have on the dynamics of project status reporting. To examine the process of IT project status reporting in this context, we followed a grounded theory inspired approach in which we investigated nine IT projects in one U.S. state’s government agencies. All of the projects we studied were subject to the state’s IT oversight board. Based on 118 interviews with a variety of stakeholders including technical personnel, managers, users, and contractors, we present a grounded theory of project status reporting dynamics in which the reporting process can best be characterized as a self-reinforcing cycle of distrust between the project team and the auditors. Specifically, in some projects, we observed a pattern whereby project teams interpreted the auditor’s scrutiny as unfair and as not adding value to their projects. As a result, they responded by embracing some defensive reporting tactics. The auditors interpreted the project team’s actions as indicating either deception or incompetence, and they then increased their scrutiny of the reports, thus exacerbating the situation and further fuelling the cycle of distrust. We discuss implications for both theory and practice
