Grey Matter Matters: Teaching Strategies for the Brain Compatible Classroom

    Get PDF
The brain is extremely complex. The brain has the amazing ability to reshape and reorganise its neural networks, depending on increased or decreased use, making it malleable or ‘plastic’. This plasticity allows for incredible changes to take place, which were once thought impossible. This article explores current research in this area and offers brain compatible strategies that teachers can employ in the classroom to make learning more efficient, to raise student achievement, and to facilitate a healthy learning environment

Innovation barriers for small biotech, ICT and clean tech firms:Coping with knowledge leakage and legitimacy deficits

Innovative high-tech small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are thought to be drivers of economic renewal and growth. However, due to their limited size, SMEs face two fundamental innovation barriers: the risk that other organizations appropriate the returns to the newly created knowledge by SMEs (knowledge leakage), and a lack of understanding and recognition of their business on the part of potential stakeholders (legitimacy deficits). Based on a panel study of 196 SMEs this paper shows that biotech, ICT and clean tech firms choose different strategies to deal with knowledge leakage and legitimacy deficits. To prevent knowledge leakage, high-tech SMEs are very selective in choosing their R&D partners and collaborate with basic rather than applied technology developers. Furthermore, to gain organizational legitimacy, high-tech SMEs pursue activities that focus not only on product development but also on generating awareness and understanding of their technologies.

Recruiting and retaining children and families' social workers. The potential of work discussion groups

    Get PDF
Current difficulties with the recruitment and retention of children and families' social workers have been formally acknowledged. However, although initiatives which focus on remuneration and career progression are clearly welcome, research and evidence from practice highlights how social workers themselves place high value on the availability of good quality supervision. Yet, questions remain about whether first-line managers have the time or are even in the best position to offer this support. This article draws on the experience and evaluation of one particular model of supervision — 'work discussion groups' —and explores its impact with residential social work staff and teachers as well as the potential for further developments of this kind

Unemployment and Public Budget Impacts of the Auto Bailout

    Get PDF
We estimate the impact of the 2009 financial rescue of two large American automobile companies (General Motors and Chrysler) on unemployment in Michigan. We conservatively estimate that the auto bailout saved about 7,700 workers from unemployment each month over a period of four-and-a-half years. This translates to a public savings of between 1.3and1.3 and 1.6 billion via lower transfer payments and higher tax revenues
