Magnetoresistance, Micromagnetism, and Domain Wall Scattering in Epitaxial hcp Co Films
Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) observed in transport measurements of
hcp Co films with stripe domains were recently reported and interpreted in
terms of a novel domain wall (DW) scattering mechanism. Here detailed MR
measurements, magnetic force microscopy, and micromagnetic calculations are
combined to elucidate the origin of MR in this material. The large negative
room temperature MR reported previously is shown to be due to ferromagnetic
resistivity anisotropy. Measurements of the resistivity for currents parallel
(CIW) and perpendicular to DWs (CPW) have been conducted as a function of
temperature. Low temperature results show that any intrinsic effect of DWs
scattering on MR of this material is very small compared to the anisotropic MR.Comment: 5 pages, 5 Figures, submitted to PR
Role of phason-defects on the conductance of a 1-d quasicrystal
We have studied the influence of a particular kind of phason-defect on the
Landauer resistance of a Fibonacci chain. Depending on parameters, we sometimes
find the resistance to decrease upon introduction of defect or temperature, a
behavior that also appears in real quasicrystalline materials. We demonstrate
essential differences between a standard tight-binding model and a full
continuous model. In the continuous case, we study the conductance in relation
to the underlying chaotic map and its invariant. Close to conducting points,
where the invariant vanishes, and in the majority of cases studied, the
resistance is found to decrease upon introduction of a defect. Subtle
interference effects between a sudden phason-change in the structure and the
phase of the wavefunction are also found, and these give rise to resistive

Closed forms and multi-moment maps
We extend the notion of multi-moment map to geometries defined by closed
forms of arbitrary degree. We give fundamental existence and uniqueness results
and discuss a number of essential examples, including geometries related to
special holonomy. For forms of degree four, multi-moment maps are guaranteed to
exist and are unique when the symmetry group is (3,4)-trivial, meaning that the
group is connected and the third and fourth Lie algebra Betti numbers vanish.
We give a structural description of some classes of (3,4)-trivial algebras and

Supersymmetry Without Prejudice
We begin an exploration of the physics associated with the general
CP-conserving MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation, the pMSSM. The 19 soft SUSY
breaking parameters in this scenario are chosen so as to satisfy all existing
experimental and theoretical constraints assuming that the WIMP is a
conventional thermal relic, ie, the lightest neutralino. We scan this parameter
space twice using both flat and log priors for the soft SUSY breaking mass
parameters and compare the results which yield similar conclusions. Detailed
constraints from both LEP and the Tevatron searches play a particularly
important role in obtaining our final model samples. We find that the pMSSM
leads to a much broader set of predictions for the properties of the SUSY
partners as well as for a number of experimental observables than those found
in any of the conventional SUSY breaking scenarios such as mSUGRA. This set of

Deep Inelastic Scattering from off-Shell Nucleons
We derive the general structure of the hadronic tensor required to describe
deep-inelastic scattering from an off-shell nucleon within a covariant
formalism. Of the large number of possible off-shell structure functions we
find that only three contribute in the Bjorken limit. In our approach the usual
ambiguities encountered when discussing problems related to off-shellness in
deep-inelastic scattering are not present. The formulation therefore provides a
clear framework within which one can discuss the various approximations and
assumptions which have been used in earlier work. As examples, we investigate
scattering from the deuteron, nuclear matter and dressed nucleons. The results
of the full calculation are compared with those where various aspects of the
off-shell structure are neglected, as well as with those of the convolution

Role of Vector Mesons in High-Q^2 Lepton-Nucleon Scattering
The possible role played by vector mesons in inclusive deep inelastic
lepton-nucleon scattering is investigated. In the context of the convolution
model, we calculate self-consistently the scaling contribution to the nucleon
structure function using the formalism of time-ordered perturbation theory in
the infinite momentum frame. Our results indicate potentially significant
effects only when the vector meson---nucleon form factor is very hard.
Agreement with the experimental antiquark distributions, however, requires

Factorization and NNLL Resummation for Higgs Production with a Jet Veto
Using methods of effective field theory, we derive the first all-order
factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production cross section with a jet
veto, imposed by means of a standard sequential recombination jet algorithm.
Like in the case of small-q_T resummation in Drell-Yan and Higgs production,
the factorization is affected by a collinear anomaly. Our analysis provides the
basis for a systematic resummation of large logarithms log(m_H/p_T^veto) beyond
leading-logarithmic order. Specifically, we present predictions for the
resummed jet-veto cross section and efficiency at next-to-next-to-leading
logarithmic order. Our results have important implications for Higgs-boson
searches at the LHC, where a jet veto is required to suppress background

Hysteresis, Avalanches, and Disorder Induced Critical Scaling: A Renormalization Group Approach
We study the zero temperature random field Ising model as a model for noise
and avalanches in hysteretic systems. Tuning the amount of disorder in the
system, we find an ordinary critical point with avalanches on all length
scales. Using a mapping to the pure Ising model, we Borel sum the
expansion to for the correlation length exponent. We sketch a
new method for directly calculating avalanche exponents, which we perform to
. Numerical exponents in 3, 4, and 5 dimensions are in good

Parents, individualism and education: three paradigms and four countries
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) is an important indicator of the increased global importance of education. It defines the goal of education at the level of the child rather than the state, the community or household. The requirement that each child be treated as an individual who can expect to see their 'personality, talents and mental and physical abilities' fully developed, is an example of the individualism which features in three important theoretical paradigms for understanding the rise of education and training. We compare accounts of the global growth of education produced by functionalism, neoinstitutionalism and political economy with the help of qualitative research on children's experience of parental influences. The research is drawn from semi-structured interviews with millennial graduates in Portugal, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It reveals weaknesses in the paradigms which are related to the way each theorises individualism and the role it plays in parental influence on education. The functionalist and neoinstitutionalist conceptions of individualism limit the usefulness of these paradigms for understanding changes in the way families around the world prepare children for education. The political economy paradigm is more promising; however, an approach which identifies only one, neoliberal, version of individualism has limited purchase on international differences in parental influences and the way these influences are changing. An approach which can draw on the contrast between a cognitive individualism associated with neoliberalism, and sentimental individualism which originates in social movements, is more promising.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
