SNAPSHOT USA 2019 : a coordinated national camera trap survey of the United States

All rights reserved.With the accelerating pace of global change, it is imperative that we obtain rapid inventories of the status and distribution of wildlife for ecological inferences and conservation planning. To address this challenge, we launched the SNAPSHOT USA project, a collaborative survey of terrestrial wildlife populations using camera traps across the United States. For our first annual survey, we compiled data across all 50 states during a 14-week period (17 August - 24 November of 2019). We sampled wildlife at 1509 camera trap sites from 110 camera trap arrays covering 12 different ecoregions across four development zones. This effort resulted in 166,036 unique detections of 83 species of mammals and 17 species of birds. All images were processed through the Smithsonian's eMammal camera trap data repository and included an expert review phase to ensure taxonomic accuracy of data, resulting in each picture being reviewed at least twice. The results represent a timely and standardized camera trap survey of the USA. All of the 2019 survey data are made available herein. We are currently repeating surveys in fall 2020, opening up the opportunity to other institutions and cooperators to expand coverage of all the urban-wild gradients and ecophysiographic regions of the country. Future data will be available as the database is updated at eMammal.si.edu/snapshot-usa, as well as future data paper submissions. These data will be useful for local and macroecological research including the examination of community assembly, effects of environmental and anthropogenic landscape variables, effects of fragmentation and extinction debt dynamics, as well as species-specific population dynamics and conservation action plans. Mechanisms of Autoantibody-Induced Pathology
Autoantibodies are frequently observed in healthy individuals. In a minority of these individuals, they lead to manifestation of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or Graves' disease. Overall, more than 2.5% of the population is affected by autoantibody-driven autoimmune disease. Pathways leading to autoantibody-induced pathology greatly differ among different diseases, and autoantibodies directed against the same antigen, depending on the targeted epitope, can have diverse effects. To foster knowledge in autoantibody-induced pathology and to encourage development of urgently needed novel therapeutic strategies, we here categorized autoantibodies according to their effects. According to our algorithm, autoantibodies can be classified into the following categories: (1) mimic receptor stimulation, (2) blocking of neural transmission, (3) induction of altered signaling, triggering uncontrolled (4) microthrombosis, (5) cell lysis, (6) neutrophil activation, and (7) induction of inflammation. These mechanisms in relation to disease, as well as principles of autoantibody generation and detection, are reviewed herein
Mammal responses to global changes in human activity vary by trophic group and landscape
Wildlife must adapt to human presence to survive in the Anthropocene, so it is critical to understand species responses to humans in different contexts. We used camera trapping as a lens to view mammal responses to changes in human activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across 163 species sampled in 102 projects around the world, changes in the amount and timing of animal activity varied widely. Under higher human activity, mammals were less active in undeveloped areas but unexpectedly more active in developed areas while exhibiting greater nocturnality. Carnivores were most sensitive, showing the strongest decreases in activity and greatest increases in nocturnality. Wildlife managers must consider how habituation and uneven sensitivity across species may cause fundamental differences in human–wildlife interactions along gradients of human influence.Peer reviewe
Culturally-Biased Voting in the Eurovision Song Contest: Do National Contests Differ?
The economic literature on the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) establishes empirical evidence for culturally-biased voting, more precisely also biases based on geographical closeness, political relations, ethnical and linguistic affinity. The Bundesvision Song Contest (BSC), a similar contest with principally the same rules but organized on the national level in Germany, offers a unique opportunity to compare international voting bias patterns to national voting bias patterns. Thus, this paper presents an innovative analysis by comparatively analyzing the ESC's historical data from 1998 to 2013 and the BSC's data from its beginning in 2005 until 2013 with the same econometric methodology. Our results show that voting biases do not only matter in international contests but also occur in similarly-organized national contests with roughly similar magnitude and quality - despite the cultural background of participants and voters being much more homogenous
The 13th Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics
Ngā mihi aroha ki ngā tangata katoa and warm greetings to you all. Welcome to Herenga
Delta 2021, the Thirteenth Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning
of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics.
It has been ten years since the Volcanic Delta Conference in Rotorua, and we are excited to
have the Delta community return to Aotearoa New Zealand, if not in person, then by virtual
means. Although the limits imposed by the pandemic mean that most of this year’s 2021
participants are unable to set foot in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, this has certainly not
stopped interest in this event. Participants have been invited to draw on the concept of
herenga, in Te Reo Māori usually a mooring place where people from afar come to share
their knowledge and experiences. Although many of the participants are still some distance
away, the submissions that have been sent in will continue to stimulate discussion on
mathematics and statistics undergraduate education in the Delta tradition.
The conference invited papers, abstracts and posters, working within the initial themes of
Values and Variables. The range of submissions is diverse, and will provide participants with
many opportunities to engage, discuss, and network with colleagues across the Delta
community. The publications for this thirteenth Delta Conference include publications in the
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, iJMEST,
(available at https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/tmes20/collections/Herenga-Delta-2021),
the Conference Proceedings, and the Programme (which has created some interesting
challenges around time-zones), by the Local Organizing Committee. Papers in the iJMEST
issue and the Proceedings were peer reviewed by at least two reviewers per paper. Of the
ten submissions to the Proceedings, three were accepted.
We are pleased to now be at the business end of the conference and hope that this event will
carry on the special atmosphere of the many Deltas which have preceded this one. We hope
that you will enjoy this conference, the virtual and social experiences that accompany it, and
take the opportunity to contribute to further enhancing mathematics and statistics
undergraduate education.

Erziehung als Ermöglichung von Bildung. Über die originäre Problemstellung der Erziehungswissenschaft im Kontext der Bildungsforschung
In diesem Beitrag wird die These vertreten, dass die spezifische Perspektive der Erziehungswissenschaft im Kontext der Bildungsforschung durch eine besondere Problemstellung bestimmt werden kann. Diese Problemstellung lautet, Erziehung als Ermöglichung von Bildung zu erforschen. Ein solcher Vorschlag ist keineswegs trivial, gibt es doch im Fach unzählige Beispiele dafür, dass Erziehung und Bildung auch je ‚für sich‘ behandelt werden können. Die Frage, ob eine solche Trennung sinnvoll ist, spitzt sich zu, wenn die Erziehungswissenschaft im Kontext einer interdisziplinär ausgerichteten Bildungsforschung situiert wird. In diesem Fall erweisen sich sowohl eine alleinige Fokussierung auf Erziehung als auch eine alleinige Fokussierung auf Bildung als unzulänglich. Im ersten Fall wäre vonseiten der Erziehungswissenschaft überhaupt kein Beitrag zur Bildungsforschung zu erwarten. Im zweiten Fall wäre an die Erziehungswissenschaft die Frage zu richten, wie sie auf die Tatsache reagiert, dass Bildung über Disziplingrenzen hinweg thematisiert wird, sodass sich jeglicher disziplinäre Anspruch, für Bildung allein zuständig zu sein, nicht allgemein überzeugend vertreten lässt.
