Molecular nanomagnets in ac magnetic field
The behavior of molecular nanomagnets in periodic magnetic field transverse
to the easy axis direction is investigated. It is shown that at sufficiently

states, which is an important test of the molecular hypothesis of Y(4140) and
the reasonability of our model. The molecule is
deeply bound, experimental search in the channel at Tevatron

Left-handers know what's left is right: handedness and object affordance
We live in a right-hander's world. Although left-handers become accustomed to using right-handed devices, an underlying preference for objects that afford the dominant hand could remain. We employed eye tracking while left- and right-handed participants viewed advertisements for everyday products. Participants then rated aesthetic appeal, purchase intention, and perceived value. Left-handed participants found advertisements for products that more easily afforded them action to be more aesthetically appealing. They also indicated greater future purchase intention for products that were oriented towards the left hand, and gave these products a higher perceived value. Eye tracking data showed that object handles attracted attention, and were also able to retain participants' attention. Further, across multiple eye movement measures, our data show that participant eye movements were altered by the orientation of the handle, such that this side of the image was examined earlier and for longer, regardless of handedness. Left-handers' preferences might be stronger because they are more aware of object orientation, whereas right-handers do not experience the same difficulties. These findings highlight intrinsic differences in the way in which we perceive objects and our underlying judgments about those products, based on handedness.Nicole A. Modifications to the synthetic aperture microwave imaging diagnostic
The synthetic aperture microwave imaging diagnostic has been operating on the MAST experiment since 2011. It has provided the first 2D images of B-X-O mode conversion windows and showed the feasibility of conducting 2D Doppler back-scattering experiments. The diagnostic heavily relies on field programmable gate arrays to conduct its work. Recent successes and newly gained experience with the diagnostic have led us to modify it. The enhancements will enable pitch angle profile measurements, O and X mode separation, and the continuous acquisition of 2D DBS data. The diagnostic has also been installed on the NSTX-U and is acquiring data since May 2016
Predicting the cost of the consequences of a large nuclear accident in the UK
Nuclear accidents have the potential to lead to significant off-site effects that require actions to minimise the radiological impacts on people. Such countermeasures may include sheltering, evacuation, restrictions on the sale of locally-grown food, and long-term relocation of the population amongst others. Countries with nuclear facilities draw up emergency preparedness plans, and put in place such provisions as distributing instructions and iodine prophylaxis to the local population. Their plans are applied in simulated exercises on a regular basis. The costs associated with emergency preparedness and the safety provisions to reduce the likelihood of an accident, and/or mitigate the consequences, are justified on the basis of the health risks and accident costs averted. There is, of course, only limited actual experience to indicate the likely costs so that much of the costing of accidents is based on calculations. This paper reviews the methodologies used, in particular the approach that has been developed in the UK, to appraise the costs of a hypothetical nuclear accident.

Optical pumping NMR in the compensated semiconductor InP:Fe
The optical pumping NMR effect in the compensated semiconductor InP:Fe has
been investigated in terms of the dependences of photon energy (E_p), helicity
(sigma+-), and exposure time (tau_L) of infrared lights. The {31}P and {115}In
signal enhancements show large sigma+- asymmetries and anomalous oscillations
as a function of E_p. We find that (i) the oscillation period as a function of
E_p is similar for {31}P and {115}In and almost field independent in spite of
significant reduction of the enhancement in higher fields. (ii) A
characteristic time for buildup of the {31}P polarization under the light
exposure shows strong E_p-dependence, but is almost independent of sigma+-.
(iii) The buildup times for {31}P and {115}In are of the same order (10^3 s),
although the spin-lattice relaxation times (T_1) are different by more than
three orders of magnitude between them. The results are discussed in terms of
(1) discrete energy spectra due to donor-acceptor pairs (DAPs) in compensated
semiconductors, and (2) interplay between {31}P and dipolar ordered indium
