    Towards Large-scale Inconsistency Measurement

We investigate the problem of inconsistency measurement on large knowledge bases by considering stream-based inconsistency measurement, i.e., we investigate inconsistency measures that cannot consider a knowledge base as a whole but process it within a stream. For that, we present, first, a novel inconsistency measure that is apt to be applied to the streaming case and, second, stream-based approximations for the new and some existing inconsistency measures. We conduct an extensive empirical analysis on the behavior of these inconsistency measures on large knowledge bases, in terms of runtime, accuracy, and scalability. We conclude that for two of these measures, the approximation of the new inconsistency measure and an approximation of the contension inconsistency measure, large-scale inconsistency measurement is feasible.Comment: International Workshop on Reactive Concepts in Knowledge Representation (ReactKnow 2014), co-located with the 21st European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2014). Lattice Chiral Schwinger Model in the Continuum Formulation

    Get PDF
We pursue further an approach to lattice chiral fermions in which the fermions are treated in the continuum. To render the effective action gauge invariant, counterterms have to be introduced. We determine the counterterms for smooth gauge fields, both analytically and numerically. The final result is that the imaginary part of the effective action can be computed analytically from the lattice gauge field, while the real part is given by one half of the action of the corresponding vector model.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, contribution to the LATTICE97 Proceeding

Discovery of a New Quadruple Lens HST 1411+5211

Gravitational lensing is an important tool for probing the mass distribution of galaxies. In this letter we report the discovery of a new quadruple lens HST 1411+5211 found in archived WFPC2 images of the galaxy cluster CL140933+5226. If the galaxy is a cluster member then its redshift is z=0.46z=0.46. The images of the source appear unresolved in the WFC implying that the source is a quasar. We have modeled the lens as both a single galaxy and a galaxy plus a cluster. The latter model yields excellent fits to the image positions along with reasonable parameters for the galaxy and cluster making HST 1411+5211 a likely gravitational lens. Determination of the source redshift and confirmation of the lens redshift would allow us to put strong constraints on the mass distribution of the lensing galaxy.Comment: 11 pages including 1 postscript figure, aastex. Lattice chiral fermions in the background of non-trivial topology

    Get PDF
We address the problem of numerical simulations in the background non-trivial topology in the chiral Schwinger model. An effective fermionic action is derived which is in accord with established analytical results, and which satisfies the anomaly equation. We describe a numerical evaluation of baryon number violating amplitudes, specifically the 't Hooft vertex.Comment: LATTICE99(Chiral Gauge Theories

A TESTING BATTERY ON BALANCE AND PERFORMANCE SYMMETRY FOR TEAM SPORTS – AN EXAMPLE FROM ICE HOCKEY

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to develop and apply an injury and performance screening programme for team sports and exemplify this for ice hockey. A set of four tests including landing, jumping and turning was employed and performance and balance related symmetry was extracted from force plate data and velocity measures in a test group of 28 elite ice hockey players. In this team, certain exercises showed a reflection of individual injury history while players showed a high symmetry for single leg landing task. This may be an effect of the specific training this group of athletes had undergone prior to the tests. Currently, we are assessing other teams who followed different training programs and apply these tests as a longitudinal screening tool. While final results are still outstanding, the potential of this approach was discussed
