INFECTION URINAIRE A STAPHYLOCOCCUS SAPROPHYTICUS. ASPECTS MICROBIOLOGIQUES ET CLINIQUES

    No full text
Ninety-one strains of coagulase-negative 'Staphylococci' isolated from urine specimens of patients with urinary tract infection (UTI) were classified by the Kloos and Schleifer method. The study confirmed the pathogenic role played by 'S. saprophyticus' - an organism characterized by its biological properties and its resistance to novobiocin - in UTI of young female out-patients. On the other hand, coagulase-negative 'Staphylococci' sensitive to novobiocin were mostly found in the urine of elderly in-patients who had undergone instrumental procedures or who presented with urinary tract abnormalities. Precise identification of coagulase-negative 'Staphylococci' urinary isolates is needed, since it has epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic applications.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Late prosthetic valve endocarditis: Review of 19 cases and treatment

    No full text
Eighteen out of 1,606 patients treated by valve replacement between January 1971 to June 1979 were admitted in Brugmann University Hospital for late prosthetic value endocarditis. Of the 19 episodes (one patient had two distinct episodes four years apart), nine (group I) were treated medically and 10 (group II) by combined medical and surgical therapy. The infective organism was Staphylococcus epidermidis in two-thirds of our cases. Two cases in group I (22.2%) were long-term survivors. In group II, all 10 patients survived reoperation. There were four late deaths; six patients (60%) were still alive 1.8 to 4.4 years later (mean survival three years). Prompt prosthetic valve replacement is recommended in the presence of systemic emboli, evolving murmurs, uncontrolled sepsis or congestive heart failure (especially if the infective organism is a fungus or a staphylococcus), in late prosthetic valve endocarditis.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

INFECTIONS A SALMONELLA TYPHI-MURIUM CHEZ LES TRANSPLANTES RENAUX. ETUDE EPIDEMIOLOGIQUE PAR LYSOTYPE ET BIOTYPE

    No full text
During an 8-year period (1970-1977), 24 strains of Salmonella spp. were isolated in 24 renal transplant recipients. In 19 cases (79%) the infection had an unusual presentation (extradigestive focus or bacteremia), and 15 of the offending strains belonged to the serotype typhimurium. During the same period 161 strains of Salmonella spp. were isolated in 159 adult patients admitted to units other than the renal transplantation unit; 52% of the infections presented as gastroenteritis, and S. typhimurium accounted for only 25% of unusual presentations. However, the lysotypes and biotypes of S. typhimurium were as diverse in the renal transplantation unit as in other hospital units. The study failed to demonstrate interhuman transmission of Salmonella spp. within the renal transplantation unit.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

The authors report a case of colchicine intoxication associated with an adult respiratory distress syndrome. They implicate the role of the toxic substance in the appearance of this syndrome.SCOPUS: NotDefined.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Empyema due to Salmonella dublin

An alcoholic patient presented with a thoracic empyema secondary to a pancreatic abscess with Salmonella dublin. The absence of an adjacent pulmonary parenchymal infection suggested a transdiaphragmatic passage of organisms.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
