    Effect of plant density and foliar fertilizer spray on growth and yield of netted melon (Cucumis melo L.) ‘Inthanon RZ’

    The cultivation of netted melon is becoming popular in vegetable farms in Vietnam. The netted melon cultivar ‘Inthanon RZ’ was evaluated for its growth ability, yield, fruit quality, and economic efficiency when treated with densities of 38,000 and 33,000 plants/ha and four foliar fertilizer sprays: Biotic foliar AMINO ACID 1000, NPK NUTRI-GOLD 29-10-10 + 3 MgO + TE, NPK HAI-CHYODA 14-17-12 + 12 S, and NPK DAU TRAU 30-10-5 + TE. The experiment was conducted in a plastic house at the Biotechnology Institute of Hue University from January to April 2019. The experiment area was 72 m2. The results indicate that plants have a similar growth time under the cultivation conditions. The plants grown with the density of 38,000 plants/ha exhibit a higher leaf area index. The actual yield ranges from 34.00 tons/ha (AMINO ACID 1000; 33,000 plants/ha) to 46.22 tons/ha (NPK HAI-CHYODA 14-17-12 + 12 S; 38,000 plants/ha). Applying NPK HAI-CHYODA 14-17-12 + 12S or NPK DAU TRAU results in the Brix grade higher than 12.0 for both plant densities. Powdery mildew is the most frequently observed in the treatments with NPK DAU TRAU. The yield and profit obtained from trading the melon are highest for the density of 38,000 plants/ha with fertilizer NPK HAI-CHYODA 14-17-12 + 12S

    Influence of nitrogen level and plant density on growth parameters and economic efficiency of sunflower cultured in Thua Thien Hue province

    Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivation is gaining popularity among Vietnamese farmers. Two separate experiments were conducted from January to April 2018 in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Four levels of each factor were included in the experiments: 0, 20, 40, and 60 kg/ha for nitrogen and 11, 13, 16, and 20 plants/m2 for the density. The nitrogen fertilizer (up to 60 kg/ha) substantially affects the leaf area, diameters of stem plant, receptacle and flower head, and cut flower vase life. Low plant density works well on plant height, leaf number, width and length at the flowering stage, with the largest head diameter (17.2 cm) at the 13 plants/m2 density. Based on the results of both growth ability and economic efficiency, we suggested applying N at 60 kg/ha and planting at 16 plants/m2 density for growing F1 cut sunflowers in Thua Thien Hue province

    Portfolio Allocation with Temporary Price Impact

    This thesis analyzes an investor’s portfolio choice and liquidity premium in the presence of an illiquid stock. Illiquidity is modelled by means of convex transaction costs which an investor has to pay for trading a stock. An investor is assumed to trade in the presence of a stochastic endowment which is used to generate long-term trading demands. I find that the endowment generates long-term trading incentives only if there exist correlations between the endowment and stocks returns. These incentives result in the liquidity premium which makes only a fraction of a percent of the risk premium. The portfolio choice and the conditional liquidity premium can be determined in a closed form in the case of the absence of these correlations and the main economic intuition behind the findings is confirmed

    CORRELATIONS BETWEEN FRUIT’S YIELD WITH HORTICULTURAL TRAITS AND INHERITANCE OF MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS OF SPONGE GOURD (LUFFA CYLINDRICA)

    Abstract: Enhancing the production yield fornew generations of each horticultural crop needseffective selecting programs to find outexcellent traits forming thisfruit yield. Therefore,this study aims to investigate the correlations between the fruit yield withhorticultural traits, mainly with yield’s components and inheritance of some morphological traitsofsponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica). An F2 population was generated from a cross between sponge gourds GBVN006904 (male) and GBVN005333 (female) at University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University,Vietnam. The positive correlations are observed between the fruit yield per plant andthe fruit diameter, fruit weight, and number of fruits per plant (0.901**). The male first flower appearance time showsa significant positive correlation with female first flower appearance one. The peduncle length correlates positively with the fruit length. The fruit length is enhanced when fruit weight increases. The total soluble solids and fruit diameter show a slightly negative correlation. Chi-square analysis for the leaf shape, depth of lobing, leaf color, and leaf pubescence shows a good fit to a ratio of 9:6:1, thus being controlled by duplicate genes interaction. The fruit color (dark-green:light-green) fits well to a ratio of 15:1, giving its control to duplicate genes with dark-green color being dominant, whereas the fruit shape assorts independently according toa ratio of 9:3:3:1. The fruit stripe color exhibits monogenic incomplete dominance, and the curvature of the fruit is a monogenic recessive trait. Fruit yield components, such as the number of fruit per plant, the fruit weight, and the fruit diameter,strongly affect the fruit yield of sponge gourd. The inheritance of morphological traits indicates that most of the traits are controlled by complete dominance at both gene pairs excepted for fruit strip color and curvature of fruit.Keywords: correlation, inheritance, morphological traits, sponge gourd, yield component

    The Factors Affecting the Level of Information Disclosure on Financial Statements in the Industrial Enterprises Listed on Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange

    This research analyzes the factors affecting the level of information disclosure on financial statements in the industrial enterprises listed on Ho Chi Minh stock exchange. Using financial statements of 87 industrial enterprises of the fiscal year 2017, the research shows that there are 6 factors affecting and having a positive relations with the level of information disclosure. These include: the scale of business, Duration of operation, Audit firm reputation, Solvency, Financial leverage and Return on Equity (ROE). The result points to signals that help the State Securities Commission to control better of information disclosure of firms. In addition, the study recommends measures for shareholders, especially those in large companies to strengthen the supervision, control managers in the disclosure of business information

    Debt maturity and corporate R&D investment – the empirical study of US listed firms

    This study investigates the relationships between debt maturity structure and corporation R&D investment. Using a large sample of US listed firms over the period of 1995 to 2015, it was found that the use of bank debt positively influences R&D investment, whereas the use of public debt exerts a negative impact. However, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) mitigates the information asymmetry such that the advantages of private information from banks shrunk. As a result, public debtholders benefit more from the SOX and turn out to be positively influenced by the R&D investment after SOX. Moreover, bank debt impact on R&D spending reduces over the post-SOX. The results also find that the SOX influences the debt maturity on corporate R&D investment only for large corporations, the effects remain unchanged for small businesses

    Non-Standard Vietnamese Word Detection and Normalization for Text-to-Speech

    Converting written texts into their spoken forms is an essential problem in any text-to-speech (TTS) systems. However, building an effective text normalization solution for a real-world TTS system face two main challenges: (1) the semantic ambiguity of non-standard words (NSWs), e.g., numbers, dates, ranges, scores, abbreviations, and (2) transforming NSWs into pronounceable syllables, such as URL, email address, hashtag, and contact name. In this paper, we propose a new two-phase normalization approach to deal with these challenges. First, a model-based tagger is designed to detect NSWs. Then, depending on NSW types, a rule-based normalizer expands those NSWs into their final verbal forms. We conducted three empirical experiments for NSW detection using Conditional Random Fields (CRFs), BiLSTM-CNN-CRF, and BERT-BiGRU-CRF models on a manually annotated dataset including 5819 sentences extracted from Vietnamese news articles. In the second phase, we propose a forward lexicon-based maximum matching algorithm to split down the hashtag, email, URL, and contact name. The experimental results of the tagging phase show that the average F1 scores of the BiLSTM-CNN-CRF and CRF models are above 90.00%, reaching the highest F1 of 95.00% with the BERT-BiGRU-CRF model. Overall, our approach has low sentence error rates, at 8.15% with CRF and 7.11% with BiLSTM-CNN-CRF taggers, and only 6.67% with BERT-BiGRU-CRF tagger.Comment: The 14th International Conference on Knowledge and Systems Engineering (KSE 2022

    Physical Model Test for Soft Soil With or Without Prefabricated Vertical Drain with Loading

    The paper builds a physical model of testing in the laboratory with the parametric tempered glass box 0.5  0.5 1.2 m (length  width  depth) containing saturated clay to study the settlement and consolidation when loading increased gradually over time. The research covers herein to present the monitoring of settlement and pore water pressure, settlement calculation, numerical simulation using PLAXIS software V8.2 based on the results of soil physical and mechanical tests before and after loading in case of having or not prefabricated vertical drain (PVD). In case of no PVD, the calculation and numerical simulation using the soil parameters before loading have the differential settlement from the monitoring data, approximately 3.86 mm (10.45%), 0.41 mm (1.11%) respectively. Meanwhile, the deviation in the case using data after loading is about 2.29 mm (6.20%), 0.21 mm (0.56%) respectively. In case of PVD, the calculation and numerical simulation with the testing result of before loading deviation from the settlement monitoring by subsidence meter is 2.91 mm (7.88%), 44.42 mm (120.28%), calculation and simulation with the testing result of after loading deviation is 0.80 mm (2.17%), 1.26 mm (3.41%). In the case of having PVD, the difference in calculation, subsidence observation, and numerical simulation between the mechanical properties before and after loading is significant, when using the mechanical data after loading then the results are quite close to the subsidence of observation and simulation rather than before loading.
