Aggregate real wages: macro fluctuations and micro drivers
Using data from the Current Population Survey from 1980 through 2010 we examine what drives variation and cyclicality in the growth rate of real wages over time. We employ a novel decomposition technique that allows us to divide the time series for median weekly earnings growth into the part associated with the wage growth of persons employed at the beginning and end of the period (the wage growth effect) and the part associated with changes in the composition of earners (the composition effect). The relative importance of these two effects varies widely over the business cycle. When the labor market is tight job switchers get high wage increases, making them account for half of the variation in median weekly earnings growth over our sample. Their wage growth, as well as that of job-stayers, is procyclical. During labor market downturns, this procyclicality is largely offset by the change in the composition of the workforce, leading aggregate real wages to be almost noncyclical. Most of this composition effect works through the part-time employment margin. Remarkably, the unemployment margin neither accounts for much of the variation nor for much of the cyclicality of median weekly earnings growth.Wages ; Labor market
Farmersâ Perceptions and Willingness to Pay for Metarhizium-based Biopesticide to Control Cotton Bollworms in Benin (West Africa)
The study assesses farmersâ perceptions and willingness to pay for a biopesticide developed from Metarhizium anisopliae a fungi. A sample of 400 conventional and organic cotton producers was randomly selected in cotton producing zones in Benin and interviewed for their perceptions on the efficacy of the biopesticide and the likely prices they are willing to pay for the product to control a major pest like Helicoverpa armigera or cotton bollworm causing substantial crop losses. An econometric model (Logit) is used to identify factors highly likely to affect farmerâs willingness to purchase the product. The results show that Helicoverpa armigera or cotton bollworm is perceived by farmers as the most severe pest with losses reaching up to 100%. Farmers attribute the current pest intensity to a number of factors including ineffectiveness of chemical pesticides, delay in access to input mainly fertilizers and the development of refuge host plants for cotton pests. The results also show that most cotton producers and their households members are exposed to chemical insecticides without adequate protection devices during the pest control sprays. Both organic and conventional cotton producers have expressed a significant interest in the use of Metarhizium to control Helicoverpa on cotton. Both types of farmers willing to pay more for any pest control product that would improve cotton product quality for higher cotton price. Spot deformation and replication in the two-dimensional Belousov-Zhabotinski reaction in water-in-oil microemulsion
In the limit of large diffusivity ratio, spot-like solutions in the
two-dimensional Belousov-Zhabotinski reaction in water-in-oil microemulsion are
studied. It is shown analytically that such spots undergo an instability as the
diffusivity ratio is decreased. An instability threshold is derived. For spots
of small radius, it is shown that this instability leads to a spot splitting
into precisely two spots. For larger spots, it leads to deformation, fingering
patterns and space-filling curves. Numerical simulations are shown to be in

A single mutation in the envelope protein modulates flavivirus antigenicity, stability, and pathogenesis
The structural flexibility or 'breathing' of the envelope (E) protein of flaviviruses allows virions to sample an ensemble of conformations at equilibrium. The molecular basis and functional consequences of virus conformational dynamics are poorly understood. Here, we identified a single mutation at residue 198 (T198F) of the West Nile virus (WNV) E protein domain I-II hinge that regulates virus breathing. The T198F mutation resulted in a ~70-fold increase in sensitivity to neutralization by a monoclonal antibody targeting a cryptic epitope in the fusion loop. Increased exposure of this otherwise poorly accessible fusion loop epitope was accompanied by reduced virus stability in solution at physiological temperatures. Introduction of a mutation at the analogous residue of dengue virus (DENV), but not Zika virus (ZIKV), E protein also increased accessibility of the cryptic fusion loop epitope and decreased virus stability in solution, suggesting that this residue modulates the structural ensembles sampled by distinct flaviviruses at equilibrium in a context dependent manner. Although the T198F mutation did not substantially impair WNV growth kinetics in vitro, studies in mice revealed attenuation of WNV T198F infection. Gravitating defects of codimension-two
Thin gravitating defects with conical singularities in higher codimensions
and with generalized Israel matching conditions are known to be inconsistent
for generic energy-momentum. A way to remove this inconsistency is proposed and
is realized for an axially symmetric gravitating codimension-two defect in six
dimensional Einstein gravity. By varying with respect to the brane embedding
fields, alternative matching conditions are derived, which are generalizations
of the Nambu-Goto equations of motion of the defect, consistent with bulk
gravity. For a maximally symmetric defect the standard picture is recovered.
The four-dimensional perfect fluid cosmology coincides with conventional FRW in
the case of radiation, but for dust it has rho^{4/3} instead of rho. A
four-dimensional black hole solution is presented having the Schwarzschild form

CO Line Emission and Absorption from the HL Tau Disk: Where is all the dust?
We present high-resolution infrared spectra of HL Tau, a heavily embedded
young star. The spectra exhibit broad emission lines of hot CO gas as well as
narrow absorption lines of cold CO gas. The column density for this cooler
material (7.5+/-0.2 x 10^18 cm-2) indicates a large column of absorbing gas
along the line of sight. In dense interstellar clouds, this column density of
CO gas is associated with Av~52 magnitudes. However, the extinction toward this
source (Av~23) suggests that there is less dust along the line of sight than
inferred from the CO absorption data. We discuss three possibilities for the
apparent paucity of dust along the line of sight through the flared disk: 1)
the dust extinction has been underestimated due to differences in circumstellar
grain properties, such as grain agglomeration; 2) the effect of scattering has
been underestimated and the actual extinction is much higher; or (3) the line
of sight through the disk is probing a gas-rich, dust-depleted region, possibly
due to the stratification of gas and dust in a pre-planetary disk.Comment: To be published in The Astrophysical Journa
