Spin Echo Decay in a Stochastic Field Environment
We derive a general formalism with which it is possible to obtain the time
dependence of the echo size for a spin in a stochastic field environment. Our
model is based on ``strong collisions''. We examine in detail three cases
where: (I) the local field is Ising-like, (II) the field distribution is
continuous and has a finite second moment, and (III) the distribution is
Lorentzian. The first two cases show a T2 minimum effect and are exponential in
time cubed for short times. The last case can be approximated by a
phenomenological stretched exponential.Comment: 11 pages + 3 postscript figure
The Mid-Infrared Instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope, VIII: The MIRI Focal Plane System
We describe the layout and unique features of the focal plane system for
MIRI. We begin with the detector array and its readout integrated circuit
(combining the amplifier unit cells and the multiplexer), the electronics, and
the steps by which the data collection is controlled and the output signals are
digitized and delivered to the JWST spacecraft electronics system. We then
discuss the operation of this MIRI data system, including detector readout
patterns, operation of subarrays, and data formats. Finally, we summarize the
performance of the system, including remaining anomalies that need to be
corrected in the data pipeline
A life in progress: motion and emotion in the autobiography of Robert M. La Follette
This article is a study of a La Folletteâs Autobiography, the autobiography of the leading Wisconsin progressive Robert M. La Follette, which was published serially in 1911 and, in book form, in 1913. Rather than focusing, as have other historians, on which parts of La Folletteâs account are accurate and can therefore be trusted, it explains instead why and how this major autobiography was conceived and written. The article shows that the autobiography was the product of a sustained, complex, and often fraught series of collaborations among La Folletteâs family, friends, and political allies, and in the process illuminates the importance of affective ties as well as political ambition and commitment in bringing the project to fruition. Nuclear spin-spin coupling in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} studied by stimulated echo decay
We have performed copper NQR experiments in high temperature superconductors
YBa_{2}Cu_{4}O_{8}, YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}, and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.12 and
0.15), using the stimulated echo technique. The stimulated echo intensity is
analyzed by a model that includes the spin-lattice relaxation process (T_ {1
}-process) and the fluctuating local field due to nuclear spin-spin coupling.
The model gives quantitative account of the experimental results in Y-based
compounds using the known values of 1/T_{1} and 1/T_{2G}, the gaussian decay
rate of the spin echo intensity. The same model applied to LSCO enables us to
extract the value of T_{2G}. Our results indicate that T_{1}T/T_{2G} is
independent of temperature, implying that the dynamic exponent is one in
La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}.Comment: 14 pages, 11 fugures, The bibliography field is correcte
Interplane magnetic coupling effects in the multilattice compound Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15}
We investigate the interplane magnetic coupling of the multilattice compound
Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15} by means of a bilayer Hubbard model with inequivalent planes.
We evaluate the spin response, effective interaction and the intra- and
interplane spin-spin relaxation times within the fluctuation exchange
approximation. We show that strong in-plane antiferromagnetic fluctuations are
responsible for a magnetic coupling between the planes, which in turns leads to
a tendency of the fluctuation in the two planes to equalize.
This equalization effect grows whit increasing in-plane antiferromagnetic
fluctuations, i. e., with decreasing temperature and decreasing doping, while
it is completely absent when the in-layer correlation length becomes of the
order of one lattice spacing. Our results provide a good qualitative
description of NMR and NQR experiments in Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15}.Comment: Final version, to appear. in Phys. Rev. B (Rapid Communications),

A comparative framework: how broadly applicable is a 'rigorous' critical junctures framework?
The paper tests Hogan and Doyle's (2007, 2008) framework for examining critical junctures. This framework sought to incorporate the concept of ideational change in understanding critical junctures. Until its development, frameworks utilized in identifying critical junctures were subjective, seeking only to identify crisis, and subsequent policy changes, arguing that one invariably led to the other, as both occurred around the same time. Hogan and Doyle (2007, 2008) hypothesized ideational change as an intermediating variable in their framework, determining if, and when, a crisis leads to radical policy change. Here we test this framework on cases similar to, but different from, those employed in developing the exemplar. This will enable us determine whether the framework's relegation of ideational change to a condition of crisis holds, or, if ideational change has more importance than is ascribed to it by this framework. This will also enable us determined if the framework itself is robust, and fit for the purposes it was designed to perform â identifying the nature of policy change
CCR2 Acts as Scavenger for CCL2 during Monocyte Chemotaxis
<div><h3>Background</h3><p>Leukocyte migration is essential for effective host defense against invading pathogens and during immune homeostasis. A hallmark of the regulation of this process is the presentation of chemokines in gradients stimulating leukocyte chemotaxis via cognate chemokine receptors. For efficient migration, receptor responsiveness must be maintained whilst the cells crawl on cell surfaces or on matrices along the attracting gradient towards increasing concentrations of agonist. On the other hand agonist-induced desensitization and internalization is a general paradigm for chemokine receptors which is inconsistent with the prolonged migratory capacity.</p> <h3>Methodology/Principal Findings</h3><p>Chemotaxis of monocytes was monitored in response to fluorescent CCL2-mCherry by time-lapse video microscopy. Uptake of the fluorescent agonist was used as indirect measure to follow the endogenous receptor CCR2 expressed on primary human monocytes. During chemotaxis CCL2-mCherry becomes endocytosed as cargo of CCR2, however, the internalization of CCR2 is not accompanied by reduced responsiveness of the cells due to desensitization.</p> <h3>Conclusions/Significance</h3><p>During chemotaxis CCR2 expressed on monocytes internalizes with the bound chemoattractant, but cycles rapidly back to the plasma membrane to maintain high responsiveness. Moreover, following relocation of the source of attractant, monocytes can rapidly reverse their polarization axis organizing a new leading edge along the newly formed gradient, suggesting a uniform distribution of highly receptive CCR2 on the plasma membrane. The present observations further indicate that during chemotaxis CCR2 acts as scavenger consuming the chemokine forming the attracting cue.</p> </div
On the Bilayer Coupling in the Yttrium-Barium Family of High Temperature Superconductors
We present and solve a model for the susceptibility of two CuO2 planes
coupled by an interplane coupling J_perp and use the results to analyze a
recent "cross-relaxation" NMR experiment on Y2Ba4Cu7O15. We deduce that in this
material the product of J_perp and the maximum value of the in-plane
susceptibility chi_max varies from approximately 0.2 at T = 200 K to 0.4 at T =
120 K and that this implies the existence of a temperature dependent in-plane
spin correlation length. Using estimates of chi_max from the literature we find
5 meV < J_perp < 20 meV. We discuss the relation of the NMR results to neutron
scattering results which have been claimed to imply that in YBa2Cu3O_{6+x} the
two planes of a bilayer are perfectly anticorrelated. We also propose that the
recently observed 41 meV excitation in YBa2Cu3O7 is an exciton pulled down
