    Storytelling as 'unorthodox' agency:negotiating the 2012 family immigration rules (United Kingdom)

    This article attends to the lived experience of binational families subject to the 2012 family immigration rules (FIR). It seeks to enrich the pre-existing discussions of family migration within the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom, focusing on the ‘micro-political’ experiences of those whose lives have been adversely affected by their introduction. It draws on the life writings of binational families, suggesting that a micro-political focus reveals an ongoing neuropolitical experience that traditional accounts of moral agency are ill-equipped to negotiate. The article suggests an unorthodox interpretation of agency premised on storytelling, while probing the tensions that emerge when this lived experience is framed in such a manner. It concludes by positing a series of questions relating to the value of a neuropolitical labelling of the subject and suggests a need to further engage with traumatic interpretations of harm at the intersection of citizenship rights and mobility rights

    フランス語母語話者の日本語アクセントの習得について、インプットの影響と母語の転移を考察の中心とし、東京語話者、京都・大阪語話者、フランス語母語話者を対象に調査分析を行なった。その結果 、次のようなことが明らかになった。 1.フランス語母語話者は日本語発話において、フランス語の音調規則を適用している。その結果 、日本語文のイントネーションは、フランス語文のイントネーションに類似する。またフォーカスの有無によって、日本語文の文節のアクセントが変わる。2.フランス語母語話者の日本語発話の音調上の特徴を決定づける要因は、日本語の韻律構造が、アクセントを中心とした階層関係にあるのに対して、フランス語はイントネーションを中心とした階層関係にあることである。3.フランス語母語話者の日本語アクセントの習得は、母語の音調知識の転移によって困難になる。しかし日本語のイントネーションをまず習得すると、次に句音調、アクセントの順に習得できる可能性がある。The purpose of the study is to propose the effective method with which to teach Japanese intonation and accent. As a fundamental research for this purpose, I intend to report on the results of experimentation which was designed to test acquisitional influences by input and first language (L1) transfer in the process of learning Japanese accent and intonation by French learners of Japanese as a second language (JSL). The subjects are both French and Japanese (Tokyo, Kyoto-Osaka) native speakers. The results indicates that:1.French speakers apply the French prosodic rules to Japanese utterances. Consequently, French speakers can realize the intonative patterns for Japanese utterances which bear a close parallel to French intonative patterns. The accentual pattern of a Japanese phrase (bun-setsu) by French speakers changes whether it is focused or not.2.The differences of the prosodic structures between Japanese and French are crucial factors in characterizing the surface intonative patterns of Japanese utterances by French speakers; while Japanese prosodic structure forms a hierarchy centering around the accent, the French prosodic structure forms a hierarchy centering around the intonation.3.The L1 transfer of prosodic rules prevents French speakers from acquiring a Japanese accent. However, it is possible for them to acquire (1) the intonation of Japanese utterance, (2) the intonative pattern of Japanese accentual phrase, and (3)the Japanese accent

    From the Killing Ground: digital approaches to conflict archaeology–a case study from Waterloo

    Since 2015, Waterloo Uncovered has been conducting archaeological fieldwork on the famous 1815 battlefield in Belgium. This paper will focus on two aspects of this work that demonstrate how digital technologies have been used both to interpret the archaeology and to facilitate reconstruction. At Hougoumont, the farm which served as a strong point on Wellington’s right, metal detector survey has provided a visceral insight into the fighting, which has added much to what is already known from historical accounts. This interpretation has in part been facilitated through the use of a digital recording system known as ARK, which plots finds on a map of the site and allows artefacts to be viewed as groups and also as individual objects, which can be subject to detailed scrutiny. The archaeological results of the project have also been useful in informing a virtual reality reconstruction of Hougoumont, which although in an early stage of development will permit visitors to step back in time and experience the farm as it appeared in 1815

    本稿は、機能動詞「ナル」の発揮する“受動表現的特性”を、語彙論、統語論と連動する運用論の立場から指摘し、中・上級指導用マニュアルの文法記述の充実に寄与することを目的としたものである。 「世話になる」、「御馳走になる」は、機能動詞「ナル」が、「スル」と対を成し、自他対立と語彙的受動態を特徴づける連語である。また、授受の補助動詞を伴わずに「感謝」という発話行為と直接に結束するという、その運用上の振る舞いの特徴から、受動表現の一種「モラウ受益文」に通 じる求心的方向性と伝達的特性を備えていることが指摘される。 「このカードを差し込むと、ドアがあくようになっている。」などの例文に見られる文末の分析形式の「~ヨウニナッテイル」は、統語的には目的を表す「ヨウニ」と同様の補文を埋め込む包摂力を持ち、“状態変化”という実質的な意味を失った機能動詞「ナル」と「テイル」の結合が、「スル+テアル」との対立に支えられて一つの“表現のシステム”を作り出し、より背景化の進んだ、受動的・状況中心的表現効果 をもたらしている、属性記述タイプの修辞的な表現類型であると認定される。This paper gives special attention to the characteristics of passive expressions shown by the function verb naru and attempts to offer fuller descriptions for references in Japanese grammar and teacher\u27 manuals for intermediate and upper level classes.Sewa ni naru and gochisô ni naru are recognized as one type of collocation in which the function verb naru characterizes the contrast of "intransitive versus transitive" and the "lexical passive voice" by forming a pair with suru. It became clear that this type of collocation has the same functional nature as "-te morau Benefactive " (Masuoka: 1981), so that it can be used without helping verbs of giving and receiving in the speech act of" Thanking. " The analytically final sentential element -yo ni natte iru has the same syntactic nature in "Incorporation" as yô ni (purpose), and on analysis it is shown that the combined form of the function verb naru and -te iru makes a kind of "System of Expression" supported by the contrasting form suru + -te aru. Consequently, this analytic form is recognized as one kind of rhetorical expressive sentence pattern, which shows so-called Agent\u27s backgrounding (typically seen in passive sentences) and Conditioncentric effect
