Demographic history and genetic differentiation in apes
SummaryComparisons of genetic variation between humans and great apes are hampered by the fact that we still know little about the demographics and evolutionary history of the latter species [1â4]. In addition, characterizing ape genetic variation is important because they are threatened with extinction, and knowledge about genetic differentiation among groups may guide conservation efforts [5]. We sequenced multiple intergenic autosomal regions totaling 22,400 base pairs (bp) in ten individuals each from western, central, and eastern chimpanzee groups and in nine bonobos, and 16,000 bp in ten Bornean and six Sumatran orangutans. These regions are analyzed together with homologous information from three human populations and gorillas. We find that whereas orangutans have the highest diversity, western chimpanzees have the lowest, and that the demographic histories of most groups differ drastically. Special attention should therefore be paid to sampling strategies and the statistics chosen when comparing levels of variation within and among groups. Finally, we find that the extent of genetic differentiation among âsubspeciesâ of chimpanzees and orangutans is comparable to that seen among human populations, calling the validity of the âsubspeciesâ concept in apes into question

Nonverbal communication interface for collaborative virtual environments
Nonverbal communication is an important aspect of real-life face-to-face interaction and one of the most efficient ways to convey emotions, therefore users should be provided the means to replicate it in the virtual world. Because articulated embodiments are well suited to provide body communication in virtual environments, this paper first reviews some of the advantages and disadvantages of complex embodiments. After a brief introduction to nonverbal communication theories, we present our solution, taking into account the practical limitations of input devices and social science aspects. Chromospheric evaporation flows and density changes deduced from Hinode/EIS during an M1.6 flare
We analyzed high-cadence sit-and-stare observations acquired with the
Hinode/EIS spectrometer and HXR measurements acquired with RHESSI during an
M-class flare. During the flare impulsive phase, we observe no significant
flows in the cooler Fe XIII line but strong upflows, up to 80-150 km/s, in the
hotter Fe XVI line. The largest Doppler shifts observed in the Fe XVI line were
co-temporal with the sharp intensity peak. The electron density obtained from a
Fe XIII line pair ratio exhibited fast increase (within two minutes) from the
pre-flare level of 5.01x10^(9) cm^(-3) to 3.16x10^(10) cm^(-3) during the flare
peak. The nonthermal energy flux density deposited from the coronal
acceleration site to the lower atmospheric layers during the flare peak was
found to be 1.34x10^(10) erg/s/cm^(2) for a low-energy cut-off that was
estimated to be 16 keV. During the decline flare phase, we found a secondary
intensity and density peak of lower amplitude that was preceded by upflows of
15 km/s that were detected in both lines. The flare was also accompanied by a
filament eruption that was partly captured by the EIS observations. We derived
Doppler velocities of 250-300 km/s for the upflowing filament material.The
spectroscopic results for the flare peak are consistent with the scenario of
explosive chromospheric evaporation, although a comparatively low value of the
nonthermal energy flux density was determined for this phase of the flare. This
outcome is discussed in the context of recent hydrodynamic simulations. It
provides observational evidence that the response of the atmospheric plasma
strongly depends on the properties of the electron beams responsible for the

A high-level architecture for believable social agents
The creation of virtual humans capable of behaving and interacting realistically with each other requires the development of autonomous believable social agents. Standard goal-oriented approaches are not well suited to it because they don't take into account important characteristics identified by the social sciences. This paper tackles the issue of a general social reasoning mechanism, discussing its basic functional requirements using a sociological perspective, and proposing a high-level architecture based on Roles, Norms, Values and Type
Local adipose tissue depots as cardiovascular risk factors
Obesity is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although obesity-associated hypertension, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance account in part for this association, it becomes increasingly apparent that a systemic and local pro-inflammatory response of adipose tissue might also be a contributing factor. White adipose tissue (WAT) is a highly active organ secreting various peptides such as cytokines, chemokines and hormone-like proteins. Besides the visceral and subcutaneous depots, WAT is also found in the close vicinity of blood vessels (perivascular adipose tissue), where it secretes cytokines such as interleukin-1, tumor necrosis factor α, pro-atherogenic chemokines, and pro-angiogenic peptides. These factors appear to contribute directly to alterations of the function and structure of the vascular wall, including chronic inflammation, alterations of vascular tone, proliferation of smooth muscle cells, neo-angiogenesis and hence to the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular complication
A dual-mask coronagraph for observing faint companions to binary stars
Observations of binary stars for faint companions with conventional
coronagraphic methods are challenging, as both targets will be bright enough to
obscure any nearby faint companions if their scattered light is not suppressed.
We propose coronagraphic examination of binary stars using an apodized pupil
Lyot coronagraph and a pair of actively-controlled image plane masks to
suppress both stars simultaneously. The performance is compared to imaging with
a band-limited mask, a dual-mask Lyot coronagraph and with no coronagraph at
all. An imaging procedure and control system for the masks are also described.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Attempted DNA extraction from a Rancho La Brea Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi): prospects for ancient DNA from asphalt deposits.
Fossil-bearing asphalt deposits are an understudied and potentially significant source of ancient DNA. Previous attempts to extract DNA from skeletons preserved at the Rancho La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, California, have proven unsuccessful, but it is unclear whether this is due to a lack of endogenous DNA, or if the problem is caused by asphalt-mediated inhibition. In an attempt to test these hypotheses, a recently recovered Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) skeleton with an unusual pattern of asphalt impregnation was studied. Ultimately, none of the bone samples tested successfully amplified M.âcolumbi DNA. Our work suggests that reagents typically used to remove asphalt from ancient samples also inhibit DNA extraction. Ultimately, we conclude that the probability of recovering ancient DNA from fossils in asphalt deposits is strongly (perhaps fatally) hindered by the organic compounds that permeate the bones and that at the Rancho La Brea tar pits, environmental conditions might not have been ideal for the general preservation of genetic material
