Digénis Akritas et la littérature byzantine : problèmes d'approche

Basing our study upon the two oldest manuscripts of Digenes Akritas (versions G and E), we will attempt to resolve the problem of the very nature of this text: should it be considered a novel, an epic, an epic novel or a fictional epic? We would also like to address the problem of the figure of the hero himself: who is Digenes Akritas? Or even better, who are the akritai, and what does the term mean in the Byzantine context, and in the text? To what needs of society was the creation of this myth and its crystallization in epic form responding? In what historical and socio-cultural framework did this process of literary creation develop? Digenes Akritas appears to be a text foreign to the taxonomy of Byzantine literature, originating in a written or oral tradition which developed at the frontiers of the empire, in a region far from the capital and in different conditions.En nous appuyant sur les deux plus anciens manuscrits du Digénis Akritas (les versions G et E), nous essayons de résoudre le problème de la nature même de ce texte : devons-nous le considérer comme un roman, une épopée, un roman épique ou une épopée romanesque ? Nous souhaitons poser également le problème de la figure même du héros : qui est Digénis Akritas ? Ou mieux encore, qui sont les akritai, et que signifie le terme dans la réalité byzantine, puis dans le texte ? À quels besoins de la société répondaient la création de ce mythe et sa cristallisation sous une forme épique ? Dans quel cadre historique et socioculturel, ce processus de création littéraire s'est-il développé ? Digénis Akritas apparaît comme un texte étranger à la taxinomie littéraire byzantine, issu d'une tradition écrite ou orale qui s'est développée aux frontières de l'Empire, dans une région très éloignée de la capitale et dans des conditions différentes.Théologitis Homère-Alexandre.
