In this major volume on the methods of describing handwriting, an account is presented of some of the approaches to handwriting made by representatives of the recent tradition in graphonomics, especially the Nijmegen group, who study the handwriting task as a complex motor skill. Graphonomics is the term used for the multidisciplinary approach to handwriting and other graphic skills from as much of a science-oriented angle as the subject allows. This involves interactions with biomechanics, computer science, cognitive science, and experimetnal psychology, but also of these sciences with linguistics and paleography and with applied disciplines like forensic science, pattern recognition, letter design, and education. The main aim of graphonomics is to arrive at a comprehensive insight into how all aspects of graphic behavior are acquired, represented, planned, and organized by the human mind, and executed physically. This insight can then be used for a multitude of applications
