A highly-ionized region surrounding SN Refsdal revealed by MUSE
Supernova (SN) Refsdal is the first multiply-imaged, highly-magnified, and
spatially-resolved SN ever observed. The SN exploded in a highly-magnified
spiral galaxy at z=1.49 behind the Frontier Fields Cluster MACS1149, and
provides a unique opportunity to study the environment of SNe at high z. We
exploit the time delay between multiple images to determine the properties of
the SN and its environment, before, during, and after the SN exploded. We use
the integral-field spectrograph MUSE on the VLT to simultaneously target all
observed and model-predicted positions of SN Refsdal. We find MgII emission at
all positions of SN Refsdal, accompanied by weak FeII* emission at two
positions. The measured ratios of [OII] to MgII emission of 10-20 indicate a
high degree of ionization with low metallicity. Because the same high degree of
ionization is found in all images, and our spatial resolution is too coarse to
resolve the region of influence of SN Refsdal, we conclude that this high
degree of ionization has been produced by previous SNe or a young and hot
stellar population. We find no variability of the [OII] line over a period of
57 days. This suggests that there is no variation in the [OII] luminosity of
the SN over this period, or that the SN has a small contribution to the
integrated [OII] emission over the scale resolved by our observations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Constraints on decreases in Eta Carinae's mass loss from 3D hydrodynamic simulations of its binary colliding winds
Recent work suggests that the mass-loss rate of the primary star (Eta A) in
the massive colliding wind binary Eta Carinae dropped by a factor of 2-3
between 1999 and 2010. We present results from large- (r=1545au) and small-
(r=155au) domain, 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations of Eta
Car's colliding winds for 3 Eta A mass-loss rates (2.4, 4.8, and 8.5 x 10^-4
M_sun/yr), investigating the effects on the dynamics of the binary wind-wind
collision (WWC). These simulations include orbital motion, optically thin
radiative cooling, and radiative forces. We find that Eta A's mass-loss rate
greatly affects the time-dependent hydrodynamics at all spatial scales
investigated. The simulations also show that the post-shock wind of the
companion star (Eta B) switches from the adiabatic to the radiative-cooling
regime during periastron passage. The SPH simulations together with 1D
radiative transfer models of Eta A's spectra reveal that a factor of 2 or more
drop in Eta A's mass-loss rate should lead to substantial changes in numerous
multiwavelength observables. Recent observations are not fully consistent with
the model predictions, indicating that any drop in Eta A's mass-loss rate was
likely by a factor < 2 and occurred after 2004. We speculate that most of the
recent observed changes in Eta Car are due to a small increase in the WWC
opening angle that produces significant effects because our line-of-sight to
the system lies close to the dense walls of the WWC zone. A modest decrease in
Eta A's mass-loss rate may be responsible, but changes in the wind/stellar
parameters of Eta B cannot yet be fully ruled out. We suggest observations
during Eta Car's next periastron in 2014 to further test for decreases in Eta
A's mass-loss rate. If Eta A's mass-loss rate is declining and continues to do

Bioprospecção de actinobactérias da rizosfera para produção de metabólitos bioativos.
Actinobactérias rizosféricas, têm mostrado grande potencial na produção de metabólitos bioativos, sendo o gênero das Streptomyces o mais bem estudado e com melhor potencial para produção destes compostos. Assim, o presente trabalho visou realizar a bioprospecção de actinobactérias rizosféricas e avaliar o potencial de seus metabólitos bioativos no controle de bactérias patogênicas. Foram isoladas linhagens de actinobactérias de plantas sadias de milho, cultivado em diferentes regiões edafoclimáticas do Estado de São Paulo. As linhagens foram avaliadas quanto ao potencial de controle de Bacillus megaterium, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonnas aeruginosa e Sthaphylococcus aureus. Os isolados que se mostraram eficientes em testes de antagonismo foram utilizados em ensaios de antibiose para verificação do potencial do composto bioativo no controle destes patógenos. Foram isolados 60 actinobactérias, identificadas morfologicamente como sendo do gênero Streptomyces. Dentre estas, 31 inibiram pelo menos 1 dos 5 patógenos em testes de antagonismos. Nos ensaios de antibiose, foi verificada a eficiência dos metabólitos de 25 actinobactérias no controle dos patógenos testados
Correlations and selection of parents to technological traits of upland cotton.
Technological traits improvement of cotton fiber is a constant demand by textile industry. This research aimed to identify the potential of improved materials with high lint percentage to contribute with alleles that increase the lint percentage in Extra long staple fiber (ELS) upland cotton. Two contrasting materials for lint percentage (LP) and fiber length (FL) were used, one with long fiber and a low lint percentage (parent A) and another with high lint percentage and medium length (parent B). The following variables were evaluated: lint percentage (LP), upper half mean length (UHML), fiber uniformity (FU), fiber strength (FS), and elongation (EL). Diallel analysis was performed using the Griffing?s Method 4 adapted to partial diallel. Additive effects were predominant over non-additive effects. The mean LP was higher when using parent B. The opposite occurred for UHML. A negative correlation was detected between LP and UHML, showing the difficulty of obtaining genetic gain for both traits at the same time.Título em português: Correlações e seleção de genitores para caracteres tecnológicos em algodoeiro herbáceo
Aharonov-Bohm interference in quantum ring exciton: effects of built-in electric fields
We report a comprehensive discussion of quantum interference effects due to
the finite structure of excitons in quantum rings and their first experimental
corroboration observed in the optical recombinations. Anomalous features that
appear in the experiments are analyzed according to theoretical models that
describe the modulation of the interference pattern by temperature and built-in

Serological Evidence of Rickettsia Exposure among Patients with Unknown Fever Origin in Angola, 2016-2017
Spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) is one among the aetiologies that cause fever of unknown origin in Angola. Despite their occurrence, there is little information about its magnitude in this country either because it is misdiagnosed or due to the lack of diagnostic resources. For this purpose, eighty-seven selected malaria- and yellow fever-negative serum specimens collected between February 2016 and March 2017 as part of the National Laboratory of Febrile Syndromes, from patients with fever (≥37.5°C) for at least 4 days and of unknown origin, were screened for Rickettsia antibodies through an immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Serological results were interpreted according to the 2017 guidelines for the detection of Rickettsia spp. Three seroreactive patients had detectable IgM antibodies to Rickettsia with an endpoint titre of 32 and IgG antibodies with endpoint titres of 128 and 256. These findings supported a diagnosis of Rickettsia exposure amongst these patients and highlight that rickettsioses may be among the cause of unknown febrile syndromes in Angola. Therefore, physicians must be aware of this reality and must include this vector-borne disease as part of aetiologies that should be considered and systematically tested in order to delineate appropriate strategies of diagnostic and control of Rickettsia in Angola.P. Relationships between three eating behaviors and nine motives for food choices among brazilian adults: A structural equation model
We examined the relationships between three eating behaviors and nine motives
underlying food choices made by Brazilian adults. Using participant responses to the
short version of the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire and the Food Choice
Questionnaire, we investigated eating behaviors (cognitive restriction, uncontrolled
eating, and emotional eating) and motives for food choices (health, mood, convenience,
sensory appeal, natural content, price, weight control, familiarity, and ethical concern).
We used a structural equation model to test relationship pathways (β), with eating
behaviors as independent variables and motives for food choices as dependent variables.
Participants were 1297 individuals (69.5% female) with a mean age of 25.0 years
(SD = 5.8). We confirmed the validity and reliability of the questionnaires in this sample.
Restrictive eating behavior was significantly related to motives of health (β = .415), mood (β = .127), natural content (β = .364), weight control (β = .681), and ethical
concern (β = .161). Emotional eating behavior was related to motives of mood (β =
.277), health (β = .137), and natural content (β = .136). Uncontrolled eating
behavior was related to motives of convenience (β = .226), sensory appeal (β = .121),
price (β = .153), and familiarity (β = .090). We believe these findings can now help
design future research and clinical interventions for managing people’s risky eating

Impact of water deficit in the relationship among alfafa traits.
This study aimed to evaluate the relationship among traits related to yield and nutritive value of alfalfa genotypes grown under deficit and full irrigation conditions. Seventy-seven alfalfa genotypes were evaluated in two different cuts, the first one with full irrigation, and the second, with water deficit. A randomized block design with three replications was used. The evaluated traits were vigor, plant height, dry matter biomass, stem-to-leaf ratio, dry matter percentage, leaf and stem protein contents, in vitro dry matter digestibility, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and lignin. Significant interaction between genotypes and environments was reported for vigor, plant height, and lignin. The correlation between traits and path analysis of dry matter biomass was performed for each cut, aiming to identify auxiliary traits for indirect selection. Water availability did not alter the phenotypic and genotypic correlations, only their magnitudes. Regardless of the environment, plant height is one of the most promising traits for the selection of alfalfa genotypes with higher dry matter biomass since it showed a high direct effect in the same sense of its phenotypic correlations. However, the coefficient of determination obtained by the model applied to full irrigation was higher than that of the water-deficit environment, indicating the importance of variables not included in this study in the determination of alfalfa dry matter biomass under dry conditions
