    Adaptive Phototransistor Sensor for Line Finding

    AbstractLine finding is used by wheeled mobile robot for localization. A phototransistor array was designed to detect the line position relative to the robot. This sensor is composed of six phototransistors to detect the position of line on the floor relative to the wheeled mobile robot. Because the ambience may change with time and the floor colour may be different from one location to another, an adaptive scheme has been designed to find the line on the floor. This proposed scheme consists of three parts; modulation and demodulation, threshold recognition with k-means clustering, and line finding with fuzzy logic. Modulation and demodulation technique is used to tackle the problem of different ambience in the surrounding. K-means clustering is used to recognize the contrast in the colour of line and floor while fuzzy logic is used to find the line relative to the sensor. Experiments were conducted in a microcontroller and it was found out that this scheme can find the line on the floor with minimum error

    A Novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Protein, U274, is transported to the Cell Surface and undergoes Endocytosis

    The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) genome contains open reading frames (ORFs) that encode for several genes that are homologous to proteins found in all known coronaviruses. These are the replicase gene 1a/1b and the four structural proteins, nucleocapsid (N), spike (S), membrane (M), and envelope (E), and these proteins are expected to be essential for the replication of the virus. In addition, this genome also contains nine other potential ORFs varying in length from 39 to 274 amino acids. The largest among these is the first ORF of the second longest subgenomic RNA, and this protein (termed U274 in the present study) consists of 274 amino acids and contains three putative transmembrane domains. Using antibody specific for the C terminus of U274, we show U274 to be expressed in SARS-CoV-infected Vero E6 cells and, in addition to the full-length protein, two other processed forms were also detected. By indirect immunofluorescence, U274 was localized to the perinuclear region, as well as to the plasma membrane, in both transfected and infected cells. Using an N terminus myc-tagged U274, the topology of U274 and its expression on the cell surface were confirmed. Deletion of a cytoplasmic domain of U274, which contains Yxx and diacidic motifs, abolished its transport to the cell surface. In addition, U274 expressed on the cell surface can internalize antibodies from the culture medium into the cells. Coimmunoprecipitation experiments also showed that U274 could interact specifically with the M, E, and S structural proteins, as well as with U122, another protein that is unique to SARS-CoV.Web of Scienc

    Autophagy Is Required for Glucose Homeostasis and Lung Tumor Maintenance

    Macroautophagy (autophagy hereafter) recycles intracellular components to sustain mitochondrial metabolism that promotes the growth, stress tolerance, and malignancy of lung cancers, suggesting that autophagy inhibition may have antitumor activity. To assess the functional significance of autophagy in both normal and tumor tissue, we conditionally deleted the essential autophagy gene, autophagy related 7 (Atg7), throughout adult mice. Here, we report that systemic ATG7 ablation caused susceptibility to infection and neurodegeneration that limited survival to 2 to 3 months. Moreover, upon fasting, autophagy-deficient mice suffered fatal hypoglycemia. Prior autophagy ablation did not alter the efficiency of non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) initiation by activation of oncogenic KrasG12D and deletion of the Trp53 tumor suppressor. Acute autophagy ablation in mice with preexisting NSCLC, however, blocked tumor growth, promoted tumor cell death, and generated more benign disease (oncocytomas). This antitumor activity occurred before destruction of normal tissues, suggesting that acute autophagy inhibition may be therapeutically beneficial in cancer. Significance: We systemically ablated cellular self-cannibalization by autophagy in adult mice and determined that it is dispensable for short-term survival, but required to prevent fatal hypoglycemia and cachexia during fasting, delineating a new role for autophagy in metabolism.     Mobile text reader for people with low vision

    People with low vision have visual acuity less than 6/18 and at least 3/60 in the better eye, with correction. The limited vision requires them to enhance their reading ability using magnifying glass or electronic screen magnifier. However, people with severe low vision have difficulty and suffer fatigue from using such assistive tool. This paper presents the development of a mobile text reader dedicated for people with low vision. The mobile text reader is developed as a mobile application that allows user to capture an image of texts and then translate the texts into audio format. One main contribution of this work compared to typical optical character recognition (OCR) engines or text-to-speech engines is the addition of image stitching feature. The image stitching feature can produce one single image from multiple poorly aligned images, and is integrated into the process of image acquisition. Either single or composite image is subsequently uploaded to a cloud-based OCR engine for robust character recognition. Eventually, a text-to-speech (TTS) synthesizer reproduces the word recognized in a natural-sounding speech.     How to use information technology to enhance the teaching of Chinese Language

    A portable and relatively low-cost monitoring unit (PMU) for continuous measurement of ammonia and carbon dioxide in CAFO (poultry in particular) applications has been developed and partially compared with an EPA-approved measurement method. The PMU utilizes sampling and purging cycles to overcome the sensor saturation characteristic of electro-chemical NH3 sensors. Preliminary comparative results show that performance of the PMU is quite comparable to the sophisticated, highercost, and less portable mobile lab method. For the range of ammonia level typical of commercial poultry buildings, the PMU is expected to produce emission rate data of reasonable quality when combined with properly measured or determined building ventilation rate
