Jiskefet, a bookkeeping application for ALICE
A new bookkeeping system called Jiskefet is being developed for A Large Ion
Collider Experiment (ALICE) during Long Shutdown 2, to be in production until
the end of LHC Run 4 (2029). Jiskefet unifies two functionalities: a)
gathering, storing and presenting metadata associated with the operations of
the ALICE experiment and b) tracking the asynchronous processing of the physics
data. It will replace the existing ALICE Electronic Logbook and AliMonitor,
allowing for a technology refresh and the inclusion of new features based on
the experience collected during Run 1 and Run 2. The front end leverages web
technologies much in use nowadays such as TypeScript and NodeJS and is adaptive
to various clients such as tablets, mobile devices and other screens. The back
end includes an OpenAPI specification based REST API and a relational database.
This paper will describe the organization of the work done by various student
teams who work on Jiskefet in sequential and parallel semesters and how
continuity is guaranteed by using guidelines on coding, documentation and
development. It will also describe the current status of the development, the
initial experience in detector stand-alone commissioning setups and the future
plans.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of CHEP conference, 201
Applied Quantum Computing
A Situation Awareness Question Generator to Determine a Crisis Situation
In this paper we present a system that generates questions from an ontology to determine a crisis situation by ordinary people using their mobile phone: the Situation Awareness Question Generator. To generate questions from an ontology we propose a formalization based on Situation Theory and several strategies to determine a situation as quickly as possible. A suitable ontology should comply with human categorization to enhance trustworthiness. We created three ontologies, i.e. a pragmatic-based ontology, an expert-based ontology and a basiclevel ontology. Several experiments, published elsewhere, showed that the basic-level ontology is most suitable
Research and Education Group Applied Quantum Computing
The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences started a research and education group on Applied Quantum Computing at September 1st 2020. This group has a focus on Quantum Computing and Quantum Sensing. Quantum Computing is done together with the Computer Science program and Quantum Sensing with the new Technical Physics program which will start September 1st 2021. The group is involved in educational efforts to create a general awareness of Quantum Computing under the umbrella of the innovation hub Quantum.Amsterdam. In February 2021 the group starts a minor Applied Quantum Computing. Students learn how to program quantum algorithms and together with companies such as Capgemini, Qu & Co and SURFsara engage in projects solving real problems

Engineering ontologies for question answering
Using an ontology to automatically generate questions for ordinary people requires a structure and concepts com- pliant with human thought. Here we present methods to develop a pragmatic, expert-based and a basic-level ontology and a framework to evaluate these ontologies. Comparing these ontologies shows that expert-based ontologies are most easy to con- struct but lack required cognitive semantic characteristics. Basic-level ontologies have structure and concepts which are better in terms of cognitive semantics but are most expensive to construct
