Deprivation model of paranormal belief: Mediation by religiosity and church involvement

    Get PDF
Paranormal beliefs are often divided between those that are central to traditional Christian doctrine and those that are associated with the supernatural or the occult. Using national sample data from the Baylor Religion Survey of 2005 (n = 1721), this study assesses religious (Christian) and classical (supernatural or occult) paranormal beliefs. The theoretical basis for this study of paranormal beliefs was developed from Parsons\u27 classification for types of belief systems. The hypotheses were tested using structure equation modeling in AMOS 18, a superior method in comparison with past studies. The structural equation model analysis showed that there are two well-defined latent factors of paranormal beliefs, one religious and one classical. A positive relationship between these two paranormal belief factors was also found. Church attendance and religiosity were shown to moderate the effects of social demographics and weak support was found for the deprivation model. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications for theory and research involving paranormal beliefs

Letter from John Teesdale to James B. Finley

Teesdale encloses material for the three Past Worthy Patriarchs, including Finley, as well as the Worthy Patriarch Elect. He asks Finley to make sure that his by-laws have been corrected. The provision calling for members to be disenfranchised for being in arrears one or two months has been declared unconstitutional by the Grand Division. He reminds Finley that the National Fund provisions have been repealed.. Abstract Number - 524https://digitalcommons.owu.edu/finley-letters/1821/thumbnail.jp

Analysis of Thick Targets by Proton-Induced X-Ray Emission

    Get PDF
Most published PIXE (proton-induced X-ray emission) work concerns thin targets. Recently progress in improving both the fundamental data base and in developing a range of standardization techniques has propelled thick target analysis to the forefront of activity in the PIXE field. Limits of detection are a complex issue depending not only on the continuous background but also on the characteristic X-rays of the matrix; in favorable cases a few ppm may be reached in convenient analysis times. The unfolding of multi-element PIXE spectra is akin to the same problem in EPMA (electron probe microanalysis), and EPMA methodologies, especially as regards background removal, have a role to play: accurate analytic lineshapes for Si(Li) detectors are a crucial ingredient of accurate extraction of peak areas. Analyses of a binary compound and of the NBS aluminum alloy SRM 1258 illustrate the current capabilities of TTPIXE (thick-target PIXE). Recent computer simulation work extends TTPIXE\u27s capability from the customary smooth specimens to targets with curved or randomly rough surfaces

Evidence for Non-Anadromous Behaviour of Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus) from Lake Hazen, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, Based on Scanning Proton Microprobe Analysis of Otolith Strontium Distribution

Scanning proton microprobe analysis was used to determine the distribution of strontium (Sr) in otoliths from arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) of known non-anadromous, known anadromous, and unknown life histories. Strontium concentration patterns in otoliths of known non-anadromous charr were low and relatively flat (with little variation) from the core area to the outermost edge of the otolith, while patterns for known anadromous charr were characterized by a similar low, flat region for the first several years of life, followed by marked oscillatory increases and decreases in Sr content for the duration of the fish's life. Small and large forms of Lake Hazen charr of unknown life histories exhibited Sr profiles that were similar to those of the known non-anadromous charr, which strongly suggest that Lake Hazen charr are non-anadromous. These results indicate that Lake Hazen is a "closed" system with energy cycling primarily within the system; this conclusion suggests that a conservative approach would be appropriate for the management of the Lake Hazen charr population.À l'aide d'une sonde protonique à balayage, on a procédé à une analyse afin de déterminer la répartition du strontium (Sr) dans des otolithes prélevés sur des ombles chevaliers (Salvelinus alpinus) ayant eu soit un cycle biologique non anadrome connu, soit un cycle anadrome connu ou un cycle inconnu.

Interaction of Serum- and Glucocorticoid Regulated Kinase 1 (SGK1) with the WW-Domains of Nedd4-2 Is Required for Epithelial Sodium Channel Regulation

    Get PDF
The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is an integral component of the pathway for Na(+) absorption in epithelial cells. The ubiquitin ligases Nedd4 and Nedd4-2 bind to ENaC and decrease its activity. Conversely, Serum- and Glucocorticoid regulated Kinase-1 (SGK1), a downstream mediator of aldosterone, increases ENaC activity. This effect is at least partly mediated by direct interaction between SGK and Nedd4-2. SGK binds both Nedd4 and Nedd4-2, but it is only able to phosphorylate Nedd4-2. Phosphorylation of Nedd4-2 reduces its ability to bind to ENaC, due to the interaction of phosphorylated Nedd4-2 with 14-3-3 proteins, and hence increases ENaC activity. WW-domains in Nedd4-like proteins bind PY-motifs (PPXY) present in ENaC subunits, and SGK also has a PY-motif.Here we show that single or tandem WW-domains of Nedd4 and Nedd4-2 mediate binding to SGK and that different WW-domains of Nedd4 and Nedd4-2 are involved. Our data also show that WW-domains 2 and 3 of Nedd4-2 mediate the interaction with SGK in a cooperative manner, that activated SGK has increased affinity for the WW-domains of Nedd4-2 in vitro, and a greater stimulatory effect on ENaC Na(+) transport compared to wildtype SGK. Further, SGK lacking a PY motif failed to stimulate ENaC activity in the presence of Nedd4-2.Binding of Nedd4-2 WW-domains to SGK is necessary for SGK-induced ENaC activity
