Fumigate efficacy of Juniperus foetidissima essential oil and two terpenes against Phthorimaea operculella
Introduction: Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is an important vegetable crop in Syria. Potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella is the main damaging pest of this crop. Many approaches were tried to control it. Objectives: This study evaluates the insecticidal activity of Juniperus foetidissima essential oil and two monoterpenes against potato tuber moth using fumigation bioassays. Methods: Essential oil was extracted from new plant branches of Juniperus foetidissima using Clevengertype apparatus. Potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella, (adults, eggs, larvae, and pupae) were exposed to different concentrations of the essential oil of Juniperus foetidissima for various periods. The significance of differences between treatments at p<0.05 were evaluated by one-way analysis of variance using the mortality percentages data. The LC50 and LC90 were calculated by Probit analysis. Results: Essential oil vapor with LC50: 0.3 μl/l air was very effective against potato tuber moth at the adult stage. However; adults sensitivity to monoterpenes varied: Nerol caused a 100% mortality at 0.025 μl/l air after 6 h, while the same concentration of citronellol caused 98% mortality. The 0.125 μl/l air concentration of the two compounds caused 100% mortality after 6 h. Conclusion: Results suggest the possibility of using Juniperus foetidissima essential oil as a fumigant to control potato tuber moth infestation in store

Skład chemiczny i toksyczność fumigacyjna olejków eterycznych z Laurus nobilis L. i Salvia officinalis L. na larwy skórojadki zbożowej (Trogoderma granarium Everts)
The essential oil composition of bay laurel (Laurus nobilis L.), and sage (Salvia officinalis L.)
leaves was investigated by GC and GC/MS. Composition of L. nobilis essential oil included
large amounts of monoterpenes 85.90%, wheras in S. officinalis, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes
were represented by 57.3% and 41.7%, respectively. Fumigant toxicity of the essential
oils was tested against larvae of Trogoderma granarium insect. Exposure to vapours
of essential oil from bay laurel and sage for 48 h resulted in about 98% and 100% mortality
of the larvae at a concentration of 60 and 90 μL/160 cm3 air, respectively. Essential oils
of bay laurel showed a higher lethal activity than that of sage with LC50 values of 37.9
and 50.7b μL/L air, respectively, following a 48 h-exposure. These results showed that the
essential oil from L. nobilis is potentially useful for management of T. granarium insects
populations in stored products.Za pomocą GC i GC/MS badano skład olejków eterycznych z liści wawrzynu szlachetnego
(Laurus nobilis L.) i szałwii (Salvia officinalis L.). Olejek eteryczny z L. nobilis zawierał duże ilości
monoterpenów (85,90%), podczas gdy w S. officinalis monoterpeny i seskwiterpeny były
obecne w zbliżonych ilościach, odpowiednio 57,3% i 41,7%. Toksyczność fumigacyjną oparów
olejku eterycznego badano na larwach owada Trogoderma granarium. Czterdziestoośmiogodzinna
ekspozycja na opary olejku wawrzynu i szałwii spowodowała 98% i 100%
śmiertelność larw przy zastosowaniu odpowiednio stężenia 60 μl /160 cm3 i 90 μl/160
cm3 powietrza. Olejek z wawrzynu powodował wyższą śmiertelność niż olejek z szałwii;
wartości LC50 wynosiły odpowiednio 37,9 i 50,7 μl/L powietrza podczas 48-godzinnej ekspozycji.
Otrzymane wyniki wskazują, że olejek eteryczny z L. nobilis może być potencjalnie
użyteczny w kontroli populacji owada T. granarium w przechowywanych produktach
Oznaczenie zawartości nikotyny w liściach niektórych odmian Nicotiana tabacum urorawianych w Syrii
Tobacco is the most widely grown non-food crop in the world. Nicotine is the
most abundant volatile alkaloid in tobacco leaves. This work aimed at measuring
nicotine levels in the leaves of seven different varieties of Nicotiana tabacum, namely:
Virginia, Burlip, Katrina, Shk al-bent, Zegrin, Basma and Burley, cultivated in Syria.
Nicotine was extracted according to approved method and its concentration was determined
by LC/MS/MS in comparison with a standard material dilution series. The percentage
of nicotine concentration was calculated manually. Statistical analysis was used to assess the
significance of differences among variables and to perform multiple comparisons.
The amount of nicotine in dry weight of tobacco leaves represented 6.7% in Virginia variety,
4.9% in Burlip, 4.84% in Katrina, 4.67% in Shk al-bent, 4% in Zegrin, 3.3% in Basma and <3%
in Burley. Significant differences in nicotine concentration were found among the different
varieties as determined by LSD test at a level of 0.05. This study shows the importance
of tobacco varieties grown in Syria, particularly Virginia, Burlip, Katrina, as a cheap
and wealthy source for nicotine to be used in some industries.Wstęp: Tytoń jest najczęściej uprawianą niejadalną rośliną na świecie. Głównym lotnym

i bogatym źródłem nikotyny stosowanej w różnych gałęziach przemysłu
Zastosowanie fumigacji za pomocą olejków eterycznych i dwóch monoterpenów do zwalczania skośnika ziemniaczaka (Phthorimaea operculella Zeller)
Introduction: The potato tuber moth (PTM) is the major economic pest of potato. Different
approaches were tried to prevent and control this pest including natural pesticides
and synthetic fumigants. Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the insecticidal
activity of the essential oils of thyme and myrtle. In addition to evaluating the insecticidal
activity of carvacrol and eucalyptol against the different life stages of potato tuber moth
using a fumigation bioassays. Methods: Thyme and myrtle oils were extracted from wild
Thymus syriacus Boiss. and wild Myrtus communis L. by hydrodistillation. Fumigation experiments
were conducted on potato tuber moth of different stages of development (eggs,
larvae, pupae, and adults), using standard methods. The potato tuber moth was treated
for different periods using different concentrations of the essential oils. One-way analysis
of variance (ANOVA) was applied on the mortality percentages data to estimate the significance
of differences between treatments at p<0.05. Probit analysis was used to estimate
the LC50, LC90 and LT50. Results: Adult stage was the most sensitive to essential oils vapours
with LC50 value of 0.5 μl/l air. Whereas, pupal stages were the most tolerant. The essential
oil of thyme possessed the strongest fumigant toxicity against eggs with a LC50 value of
6.1 μl/l air. The two monoterpens showed varied fumigant toxicity against adult stage.
Carvacrol achieved 100% mortality at 0.125 μl/l air after 6 h, and 0.025 μl/l air after 48h
exposure with LT50 period of 0.5 h. Conclusion: The present work demonstrated that T.
syriacus essential oil is a promising natural fumigant against the different developmental
stages of PTM.Wstęp: Skośnik ziemniaczak (PTM) jest szkodnikiem powodującym największe szkody
w zbiorach ziemniaka. Podejmowano różne próby zapobieżenia i kontrolowania tego
szkodnika za pomocą naturalnych pestycydów i syntetycznych fumigantów. Cele: Przedstawione
badania miały na celu określenie aktywności owadobójczej olejków eterycznych
z tymianku i mirtu. Dodatkowo stosując fumigację zbadano aktywność owadobójczą karwakrolu
i eukaliptolu przeciwko skośnikowi ziemniaczakowi w różnych stadiach jego rozwoju.
Metody: Olejki z tymianku i mirtu wyekstrahowano z dzikorosnących osobników
Thymus syriacus Boiss. i Myrtus communis L. metodą hydrodestylacji. Doświadczenia z fumigacją
prowadzono na różnych stadiach rozwojowych skośnika (jaja, larwy, poczwarki
i okazy dorosłe) przy użyciu standardowych metod. Stosowano różne stężenia oraz czasy
działania olejków eterycznych. Do określenia istotności statystycznej różnic w śmiertelności
owadów (przy p<0.05) użyto jednoczynnikowej analizy wariancji (ANOVA). Do oznaczenia
LC50, LC90 and LT50 wykorzystano analizę probitową. Wyniki: Osobniki dorosłe były
najbardziej wrażliwe na opary olejków eterycznych – LC50 przy stężeniu 0,5 μl/l powietrza.
Z kolei poczwarki tolerowały go najlepiej. Opary olejku eterycznego z tymianku najsilniej
The objective of current study was to determine the chemical constituents and fumigant
toxicity of essential oil isolated by hydro-distillation from dry fruit of bitter fennel (Foeniculum
vulgare Miller). The chemical composition of the essential oil was assessed by gas
chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Constituents
of the oil were determined as α-pinene (1.6%) and limonene (3.3%), fenchone (27.3%), estragol
(3.9%), and (E)-anethole (61.1%). The fumigant toxicity of the essential oil was tested
on larvae of the stored product insect Trogoderma granarium Everts. The mortality of larvae
was tested at different concentrations ranging from 31.2 to 531.2 μl/l air and at different
exposure times (24 and 48 h). Probit analysis showed that LC50 and LC90 following a 48 h-exposure
period for essential oil were 38.4 and 84.6 μl/l, respectively. These results showed
that the essential oil from F. vulgare may be applicable to the management of populations
of stored-product insects.Celem pracy było określenie składników chemicznych i właściwości owadobójczych olejków
