Fine structure of negatively stained adenovirus type 12

Get PDF
Adenovirus type 12 is of human origin and it shows carcinogenic activity in experimental animals. With negatively stained particles of this virus electron microscopic observations were carried out. As the result it was demonstrated that its capsid, like other adenoviruses, is an icosahedron and each capsomere is of a hexagonal shape with a hollow in its center, each of which is surrounded by 6 adjacent capsomeres and is composed of numerous small subunit-like-particles.</p

Phase cinematographic observation on the multinucleated giant cells infected with measles virus

The normal mitotic dog kidney cell division and the multinucleated giant cell formation and degeneration of the dog kidney cells infected with measles virus were observed by the phase-cinematography. It took only five minutes for the mitotic cell division. The cell assumed a spherical shape before mitosis, and the two divided cells grew to the flat cells on the bottle wall. The giant cell formation was definitely the result of cell fusion. The cellular contents of the multinucleated giant cell were exposed after buddings, and the cell itself died.</p

Fine structure in the cell wall of an unidentified bacterium from the human mouth

The author examined with electron microscope the rod-shaped bacteria obtained from the human mouth, which were peritrichous and Gram stain positive. Observations revaled the granules of 15 mμ-25 mμ in size being arranged neatly and hexagonally in the cell wall. Moreover, these granules were found to detach themselves quite readily by a slight physical process, disclosing the underlying layer. These seemed to show most probably a portion of the fine structure in the cell wall of an unidentified bacterium from the human mouth.</p

Micromorphological changes in MDCK cells infected with measles virus

There are many electron microscopic observations of the cells infected with measles virus (1-6), and all of them appear to be concerned mainly with observation on the inclusion bodies and not any seems to have described the morphology of mature virus particles located within the infected cell.</p

Morphological studies of Gross virus-induced lymphoblasts by scanning electron microscopy

Get PDF
The surface of Gross virus-induced murine lymphoblasts and C-type virus particles budding from these cells were investigated under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The cells appeared spindle-shaped or roughly-rounded with extensive surface features consisting of microvilli, blebs and ruffled membranes. C-type virus particles were detected on the cell membrane as small spherical particles, distinguishable from the microvilli. Clustered virions were observed in some cases. However, the distribution of virions appeared to be random. The surface of the virion was smooth and had no globular units at high magnification. These morphological observations were confirmed in ultrathin sections.</p

Studies on the Pathogenic Agent of Infectious Hepatitis in Okayama Prefecture, Particularly on the Virus Isolated by the Embryonated Hen's Egg â…¢: Sero-Immunological Experiments

The author studied the sero-immunological characters of the infectious hepatitis virus isolated by the chik-embryo technic. The results are briefly summarized as follows: 1) In some cases of the neutralization test and Absaettigungsversuch, with young hamsters. a pretty high degree of noutralizatien could be observed, but no definite result could be obtained. 2) With the use of chick-embryos, the neutralization could be well established between the isolated virus and convalescent sera; this fact indicates that the isolated virus is from the patients of infectious hepatitis. 3) The intracutaneous reaction with the antigen prepared from the isolated virus-infected animal organs showed a unequivocal difference to the control. Though further studies are needed, this fact suggests the existence of the relationship between the isolated virus and the infectious hepatitis

Studies on the Pathogenic Agent of Infectious Hepatitis in Okayama Prefecture, Particulaly on the Virus Isolated by the Embryonated Hen's Egg â… : Isolation of virus

To isolate the pathogenic agent from the patients of infectious hepatitis in Okayama Prefecture, the author inoculated patient materials into various sorts of laboratory animals. The results are briefly summarized as follows: 1) By inoculation of the patient blood, the feces and the liver emulsion into the embryonated hen's egg, a few strains of virus could be isolated. The inoculation by the chorio-allantoic route gave the most excellent result, and the serial passge could be well carried out by the infected chick-embryo. 2) The hamster did not succumb to inoculation of the virus habituated to the chick-embryo. In the liver, however, high degre of degeneration and round cell infiltration around Glisson's sheath were observed, which could be regareded as the mark of infection. The reinfection from the hamster to the chick-embryo could be also well established
