Developing and Evaluating Educational Programs
The chapter describes a system for the development and evaluation of educational programs (e.g., individual courses or whole programs). The system describes steps that reflect best practices. The early stages in development (planning, design, development, implementation) are described briefly. The final stage (evaluation) is described in more detail. The evaluation step is a four-tiered process based on the Kirkpatrick and Kirkpatrick model and a performance indexing measurement system of Tatum and Nebeker. The chapter should be a valuable guide for teachers, program directors, and department chairs in their efforts to create and maintain quality educational experiences and high levels of student learning
Measuring the eccentricity of the Earth orbit with a nail and a piece of plywood
I describe how to obtain a rather good experimental determination of the
eccentricity of the Earth orbit, as well as the obliquity of the Earth rotation
axis, by measuring, over the course of a year, the elevation of the Sun as a
function of time during a day. With a very simple "instrument" consisting of an
elementary sundial, first-year students can carry out an appealing measurement
programme, learn important concepts in experimental physics, see concrete
applications of kinematics and changes of reference frames, and benefit from a

When Millennials began to enter the workforce in the mid-2000s, employers struggled to engage this indecisive group (i.e., job-hoppers). At the same time, they also battled the threat of a labor shortage due to the impending retirement of an aging baby-boomer workforce (Chaudhuri & Ghosh, 2012). Organizations began to combat both issues by embracing intergenerational learning programs focused on the strengths of each group (Gerpott et al., 2017; Greengard, 2002). One strategy that has proved valuable in popular press and among companies, although fairly absent from academic literature (Kaše et al., 2019; McCann, 2017), is reverse mentoring
Orbits of Minor Bodies of the Solar System in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem
A brief introduction to the circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) is given where a third body of negligible mass moves under the combined gravitational- centrifugal potential of two co-rotating massive bodies restricted to circular orbits. The equipotential contours of a variety of two body systems in the solar system are presented along with interesting orbits of Trojans, Hildas, Thule in the Sun-Jupiter system, the libration of Pluto in the Sun-Neptune system and choreographic orbits
Electroencephalogram findings in patients with posterior cortical atrophy
Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to evaluate standard scalp EEG findings in patients with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), an atypical variant of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Clinical rationale: PCA is a topographically selective variant of AD. Patients with typical AD have an increased likelihood of seizures, which may negatively impact overall functional performance and cognition. It is currently unknown what the typical EEG findings are for patients with PCA.
Materials and methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients identified either with autopsy confirmed (n = 13) or clinically (n = 126) as PCA.
Results: 139 patients were included though only 23 (16.5%) had undergone EEG recording. The EEG was normal in 6 (26%), while an abnormal EEG was present in 17 (74%). Interictal epileptic discharges (IEDs) were found in 2 of the 23 patients (9%).
Conclusions: This study of limited sample size suggests that there may be an increased predilection to find IEDs within PCA when compared to typical AD. Larger cohorts are required to determine frequency of abnormal EEGs in PCA, roles of AEDs in therapy, and in the selection of preferred AED.
Clinical implications: Patients with PCA would potentially benefit from an EEG for assessment of IEDs which may provide the clinician with a therapeutic opportunity
Making the future a reality: Commitment assurances and time investment in daily life
Relatively little is known about how commitment manifests in couples’ everyday lives in a way that orients couples toward their future together. Building on the Investment Model of Commitment, we propose that, in everyday life, individuals with high levels of commitment are more likely to (a) assure their partners about the future of the relationship and (b) behaviorally invest in that future by spending more time in the partner’s presence. Results from a sample of individuals (N = 100) suggest that relationship commitment is associated with greater time investment in the relationship (i.e., time spent with the partner in daily life); results from a second sample of couple members (N = 269) replicate this effect and suggest that relationship commitment is associated with the use of daily assurances, which mediate the relationship between commitment and time spent co-present with the partner
An S2 Fluorescence Model for Interpreting High-Resolution Cometary Spectra. I. Model Description and Initial Results
A new versatile model providing S2 fluorescence spectrum as a function of
time is developed with the aim of interpreting high resolution cometary
spectra. For the S2 molecule, it is important to take into account both
chemical and dynamic processes because S2 has a short lifetime and is confined
in the inner coma where these processes are most important. The combination of
the fluorescence model with a global coma model allows for the comparison with
observations of column densities taken through an aperture and for the analysis
of S2 fluorescence in different parts of the coma. Moreover, the model includes
the rotational structure of the molecule. Such a model is needed for
interpreting recent high spectral resolution observations of cometary S2. A
systematic study of the vibrational-rotational spectrum of S2 is undertaken,
including relevant effects, such as non-equilibrium state superposition and the
number density profile within the coma due to dynamics and chemistry, to
investigate the importance of the above effects on the scale length and
abundance of S2 in comets.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
