Comparison of sequential and single extraction in order to estimate the environmental impact of metals from fly ash
The aim of this paper is to simulate leaching of metals from fly ash in different environmental conditions using ultrasound and microwave-assisted extraction techniques. Single-agent extraction and sequential extraction procedures were used to determine the levels of different metals leaching. The concentration of metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, As and Be) in fly ash extracts were measured by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Single-agent extractions of metals were conducted at sonication times of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 min. Single-agent extraction with deionized water was also performed by exposing samples to microwave radiation at temperature of 50 degrees C. The sequential extraction was conducted according to the BCR procedure which was modified and applied to study the partitioning of metals in coal fly ash. The microwave-assisted sequential extraction was performed at different extraction temperatures: 50, 100 and 150 degrees C. The partitioning of metals between the individual fractions was investigated and discussed. The efficiency of the extraction process for each step was examined. In addition, the results of the microwave-assisted sequential extraction are compared to the results obtained by standard ASTM method. The mobility of most elements contained in the fly ash is markedly pH sensitive
Computing generalized inverses using LU factorization of matrix product
An algorithm for computing {2, 3}, {2, 4}, {1, 2, 3}, {1, 2, 4} -inverses and
the Moore-Penrose inverse of a given rational matrix A is established. Classes
A(2, 3)s and A(2, 4)s are characterized in terms of matrix products (R*A)+R*
and T*(AT*)+, where R and T are rational matrices with appropriate dimensions
and corresponding rank. The proposed algorithm is based on these general
representations and the Cholesky factorization of symmetric positive matrices.
The algorithm is implemented in programming languages MATHEMATICA and DELPHI,
and illustrated via examples. Numerical results of the algorithm, corresponding
to the Moore-Penrose inverse, are compared with corresponding results obtained
by several known methods for computing the Moore-Penrose inverse
Highly Porous Cellulose-Based Carbon Fibers as Effective Adsorbents for Chlorpyrifos Removal: Insights and Applications
The extensive utilization of the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos, combined with its acute neurotoxicity, necessitates the development of effective strategies for its environmental removal. While numerous methods have been explored for chlorpyrifos removal from water, adsorption is the most promising. We investigated the potential of two cellulose-derived porous carbons as adsorbents for chlorpyrifos removal from water, prepared by either CO2 or H2O activation, resulting in similar morphologies and porosities but different amounts of heteroatom functionalities. The kinetics of batch adsorption removal from water fits well with the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models for both materials. The Freundlich, Langmuir, DubinināRadushkevich, and Sips isotherm models described the process of chlorpyrifos adsorption very well in all investigated cases. The maximum adsorption capacity determined from the Sips isotherm model gave values of 80.8 Ā± 0.1 mg gā1 and 132 Ā± 3 mg gā1 for the H2O and CO2 activated samples, respectively, reflecting the samplesā differences in heteroatom functionalities. Additionally, the application of either adsorbent led to reduced toxicity levels in all tested samples, implying that no harmful byproducts were generated during adsorption. Comparative analysis with the existing literature further validates the studyās findings, suggesting the efficacy and applicability of cellulose-based porous carbons for sustainable chlorpyrifos remediation
Listeria monocytogenes contamination in ready to eat foods
Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen responsible for listeriosis, a sickness with a high mortality rate. Listeriosis is largely associated with ready-to-eat (RTE) foods. It is well established that foods that pose the greatest risk of foodborne listeriosis are those RTE foods that have intrinsic characteristics such as pH and water activity that support the growth of L. monocytogenes. RTE foods can also become re-contaminated during further processing and handling. Increased handling leads to a higher probability of contamination. Sources of contamination can be food contact surfaces, processing machinery and workers. In our research, L. monocytogenes was detected in a RTE salad. Food safety criteria for Listeria monocytogenes in RTE foods have been applied from 2006 (Commission Regulation (EC) 2073/2005). Still, human invasive listeriosis was reported to increase during 2009-2013 in the European Union and European Economic Area. Time series analysis for the 2008-2015 period in this area showed an increasing trend of the monthly notified incidence rate of confirmed human invasive listeriosis of the over 75 age groups and female age group between 25 and 44 years old (probably related to pregnancies)
The effects of mineral adsorbents added to broilers diet on breast meat quality
The aim of these investigations was to determine the influence of mineral
adsorbents āMinazelā and āMinazel Plusā added into broiler diet, on the
carcass quality and nutritional, technological and sensory properties of
breast meat. The examination was done on Cobb 500 provenience divided into 4
groups: control group C (fed without addition of mineral adsorbent),
experimental group E I (0.5% of Minazel), experimental group E II (0.2% of
Minazel Plus), experimental group E III (0.3% of Minazel Plus). The results
showed that the broilers fed with the addition of mineral adsorbents, had a
higher (P < 0.01) mass of chilled carcass āready to grillā and breast mass,
than the broilers of the control group. Based on the parameters and criteria
for defining the quality of chicken breast meat (pHu and L*) it can be
concluded that meat of all groups had in average "normal" quality. According
to the results of sensory analyzed roasted breast meat, meat of experimental

Investigating the Adsorption Kinetics of Dimethoate, Malathion and Chlorpyrifos on Cellulose-Derived Activated Carbons: Understanding the Influence of Physicochemical Properties
In light of the escalating environmental concerns regarding pesticide accumulation, it is imperative to devise efficient strategies for their removal. Among the various options, activated carbons have emerged as promising candidates for adsorptive pesticide removal due to their many advantages, such as large surface area, well-developed porosity, and cost-effectiveness. However, the intricate relationship between the properties of these materials and their performance in pesticide adsorption remains largely unexplored. This study primarily focuses on examining the adsorption kinetics of three organophosphate pesticides: dimethoate, malathion (aliphatic), and chlorpyrifos (aromatic), using a range of cellulose-based activated carbon fibers with diverse specific surface areas, pore size distributions, and elemental compositions. By employing sophisticated data analysis tools, principal component analysis, and semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations, this study uncovers the importance of these distinct properties in efficiently removing structurally diverse pesticides. The results of the adsorption experiments suggested that these processes can be described using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which is confirmed via multiple linear regression. The obtained data suggest that the most effective carbon material for pesticide removal should have a pore diameter of approximately 4 nm, low oxygen content, a unimodal pore size distribution, and a high presence of sp2 domains. The insights from this research have the potential to guide the development of improved adsorbents and facilitate the rational selection of adsorbents tailored to specific pollutants based on their physicochemical properties and the pollutantsā chemical structure. By shedding light on the vital connection between adsorbent properties and performance, our findings significantly advance sustainable and effective pesticide removal, thereby fostering a cleaner and healthier environment
A VinÄa potscape: formal chronological models for the use and development of VinÄa ceramics in south-east Europe.
Recent work at VinÄa-Belo Brdo has combined a total of more than 200 radiocarbon dates with an array of other information to construct much more precise narratives for the structural history of the site and the cultural materials recovered from it. In this paper, we present the results of a recent attempt to construct formal models for the chronology of the wider VinÄa potscape, so that we can place our now detailed understanding of changes at Belo Brdo within their contemporary contexts. We present our methodology for assessing the potential of the existing corpus of more than 600 radiocarbon dates for refining the chronology of the five phases of VinÄa ceramics proposed by MilojÄiÄ across their spatial ranges, including a total of 490 of them in a series of Bayesian chronological models. Then we outline our main results for the development of VinÄa pottery. Finally, we discuss some of the major implications for our understanding of the source, character and tempo of material change
